Cal, UCLA Schedule 4 Games From 2026-29

July 10, 2024
3,606

The California and UCLA football teams have agreed to meet in nonconference games for four consecutive seasons from 2026-29 with each team hosting a pair of the four contests. Cal will welcome UCLA to California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley on Sept. 5, 2026 and Sept. 2, 2028, while the Golden Bears will travel to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, on Sept. 4, 2027 and Sept. 15, 2029.

The nonconference contests will be the first ever between Cal and UCLA. The teams first met in 1933 and have played a total of 94 times, including at least one conference game every season for 91 consecutive campaigns from 1933-2023 while meeting twice each year from 1943-45. The Bruins lead the all-time series, 58-35-1, while Cal was a 33-7 winner in their most recent meeting in the 2023 regular-season finale for both teams at the Rose Bowl.

Cal (Atlantic Coast Conference) and UCLA (Big Ten) will play football in different conferences beginning in 2024 and are not scheduled to play against each other in either 2024 or 2025.

Cal has also moved a previously scheduled home game in 2026 against UNLV from Sept. 5 to later in the same season on Oct. 3, while a previously scheduled two-game series against Florida (at Florida – Sept. 19, 2026; at Cal – Sept. 4, 2027) has been canceled.

Full-season ticket packages for the 2024 campaign are also on sale now and guarantee the same seat at the best price for all seven of Cal's home games. For more ticket information, visit CalBears.com, call 800-GO-BEARS or email goldstandard@berkeley.edu.

What's with only 5 home games most years? Should have no less than 6 every year. Ridiculous.

Not all the games have been scheduled yet. I'd imagine the body bag games like UC Davis still need to be finalized and will be home games.

Whatever happened to never playing them again?

Not sure how we will compete against them. They may be bad now but the lure of paying in power 2 conference plus media rights money that far outstrips ours is going to have them much stronger than us two years out.

I never understand why the admin seems to want to bury our program. We should be seeking 100% wins and not probable losses. We have a horrific record playing in LA.

Good thing we often whoop them in Berkeley then. They always outrecruit us and yet we're basically .500 against them since the millennium started.

Basically .500? Since 1990 we are exactly .500 against Ucla. 17-17. This is despite them having an extra home game because in 2020 we played a game that was supposed to be in Berkeley down in LA instead, and did so without having any practice time or all of our roster cleared. They had already practiced and had a real game the week before.

Their record in Berkeley is just as bad as ours is in LA against them. We're 6-12 against Ucla in LA and they're 5-11 in Berkeley. Not sure if Econ is trying to somehow credit them with our losses to USC by saying our record is horrific "in LA"? Their record against USC is horrific too, and is always played in LA. We didn't lose to them in Berkeley for more than a decade under Tedford and Holmoe! 7 straight home games from 2000 to 2012. Then we lost a close game to them at home in 2014 but drubbed them in 2016. Their longest win streak against us in LA since 1990 is 4 games.

To be in the Top 1% of all NIL collectives we only need around 10% of alumni to give $300 per year. Please help spread the word. "If we don't broaden this base we're dead." - Sebastabear

I stand corrected - did not realize the away records were similar for both schools. That said the competitive advantage is going to be far greater with all the money and prestige of being in B1G.

But hey, I think we can win if we foster the underdog mentality and develop a cult following fanbase that will be passionate and loud at least when they play at Berkeley. The latter is highly dependent on marketing and recent anecdotes seem to indicate that they are incapable of change with our house cleaning.

Darn, the roadie to the Gators got cancelled?! I've had that on my calendar for years now, and was going to be another out of state away game I was planning on going with the fam (paired with Orlando theme parks) after the Auburn game this year...

Yes, likely there will be a game in Berkeley vs. an FCS team on Sept. 6, 2025. For 2026-2027, maybe a two-game series with a Big 12 team, in addition to games in Berkeley vs. FCS teams.

Scheduling games with 'little brother/sister school', UCLA makes sense in terms of maintaining a big footprint in the Southern California media market & recruiting area. No need to cede that territory unnecessarily.

My thoughts:

1. Happy we are resuming the series with UCLA. It is really good for the fans, for the students (including the players) and for recruiting. Most of our students/alumni are from SoCal and we have a huge alumni group down there. Traditionally it was a greatest source of recruits. Lots of friends on both sides. An easy road trip for people living in Nor Cal. Big tailgates at the Rose Bowl. We can bring lots of SoCal recruits. They bring lots of fans to CMS and have a huge alumni group in the Bay Area too. It was the right thing to do for Cal football.

2. Based on what we know today, our 2025 season schedule is incredibly easy. Maybe our easiest ever. If we are good, our record can be great. The possibility of a HUGE breakout season is just sitting there. How we use that opportunity will largely determine the future of Cal football because we won't have a schedule that easy for a long time.

We will be playing Florida State and Miami regularly, not to mention Clemson, Georgia Tech…. Plenty of opportunities to pair a football with a trip to Orlando (though maybe not before the kids are in school).

For those of us living in cold Fall weather regions like the northeast or Europe, we can look forward to FL games falling later in the season.

I'd like to get a series with Hawaii in there.

Yea, it's just that Gainesville was a <2 hour drive to Orlando vs 3-4+ hour drive from those other locations. But you're right, still doable.

Hawaii needs a stadium first. It sounds like it might be possible by 2028:

I saw that UCLA reneged on their 2-game agreement with Georgia and replaced them with us.

Hawaii currently plays on campus in Manoa. It is tiny, but as long as Cal is given seats it is far better as a visitor than other stadiums (USC, UW….).

Also, last time we played Hawaii we played in Australia, maybe play them there again or in Japan?
