ESPN’s College GameDay Coming To Berkeley

September 28, 2024
9,583

ESPN's College GameDay built by The Home Depot pregame show will originate from Berkeley on Oct. 5 before the California football team hosts Miami at California Memorial Stadium. It will be College GameDay's first-ever appearance in Berkeley.

The Bears and Hurricanes will kick off Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPN.

College GameDay, ESPN's wildly popular pregame show, travels to a different college campus or game site each week of the season. It airs on ESPN and ESPNU from 6-9 a.m. PT.

Saturday's show in Berkeley will be staged at Memorial Glade in the center of campus. Fans interested in attending in person are encouraged to arrive early.

"We are thrilled that ESPN’s College GameDay will be coming to the Berkeley campus this week," UC Berkeley Chancellor Rich Lyons said. "A college football Saturday brings together our community, and we welcome the wonderful opportunity ESPN’s College GameDay provides to show what Berkeley is all about."

Cal (3-1, 0-1 ACC) enters the game after its first bye week of the season following a 14-9 defeat at Florida State on Sept. 21 in the program's first conference game as a member of the ACC. Miami (5-0, 1-0 ACC) was ranked No. 7 in the most recent Associated Press top 25 and is coming off a 38-34 win over Virginia Tech on Friday at Hard Rock Stadium.

"We couldn't be more excited to welcome ESPN’s College GameDay to Cal," Cal Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton said. "It's a great reward for everyone associated with our football program, and I know our Cal Family will savor this incredible opportunity to have our student-athletes, University and the city of Berkeley showcased on the national stage."

Cal has made three previous appearances in games from which College GameDay originated, going 1-2 in those contests.

Previous Cal College GameDay Appearances:
Oct. 9, 2004 - No. 7 Cal at No. 1 USC (23-17 L)
Sept. 29, 2007 - No. 6 Cal at No. 11 Oregon (31-24 W)
Oct. 10, 2015 – No. 23 Cal at No. 5 Utah (30-24 L)

I'm setting my alarm and waking up early to be at the Glade - who knows if we'll ever get this chance again.

Some GameDay guidelines here:

promo.espn.com/collegegameday/

Judging from this OU student newspaper article from last week, the administration should be releasing more specific guidelines and info this week:

oudaily.com/news/espn-college-gameday-blake-shelton-rules-guidelines-ou-tennessee-sec/article_5f0ab8a4-7771-11ef-87c3-a377c4941043.html

According to this article, the pit opened at 5:30 am for a show that started at 8:00 am (local time). That translates to the pit in Berkeley opening at 3:30 am. Yikes. Not much sleep Friday night.

I will set my alarm early and be there. Any good places to park early in the morning? The last 2 Game Days I saw, had a woman coach talk about her sport. I think Charmin Smith would be a good candidate to talk about our women's basketball team, and her Race for Change event which was held today for the 5th year. She is hoping to get more donor's.

In the birth place of the free speech movement….

" All signs brought to Saturday's taping will be inspected before entry and must abide by College GameDay's sign policies or will be removed."

I was waiting for Berkeley's various protest groups to learn that national media will be on campus and attempt to take the event over, but perhaps Gameday rules would keep the protesters in the distant background.

They can set up under the lights of the glow-in-the-dark ultimate frisbees.

Coming from South of the South Bay, I was thinking of parking in Fremont and taking BART. If BART runs that early. Parking near campus will be insane, IMHO.

Parking at 6am on Saturday in Berkeley shouldn't be that hard on Northside. Most of the people that will show up are going to be students and Miami visitors who will uber there.

Also the pit won't open at 3:30am, more like 5am for the early birds. Either way, no point in showing up before the 6am start, there will be plenty of room on the Glade.

BART would put me there at 7:00 am.
That's a great idea to park on the North Side. I suppose you mean the streets, not the garages.

Yes, plenty of street parking spots north of Hearst and east of Shattuck, short walk to the Glade.

I had to record it since I couldn't be there. I turned it on and was just amazed at the opening shots of the crowd. That was freaking awesome! And then I did something that I've only done two or three times in my life. I cried.

LOL! I meant after my toddler years. I'm sure I was a noisy one as a baby because I like to eat! And there's only one way to get that message across!
