BERKELEY – Fernando Mendoza (Quarterback of the Week) and Derek Morris (Specialist of the Week) both earned Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week honors for their performances in Cal's victory over Oregon State, the conference announced on Monday.
Mendoza had a big day for the Golden Bears on Saturday, completing 27 of 36 attempts while throwing for a career-best 364 yards with two passing touchdowns and no interceptions.
One of Mendoza's touchdown throws ended up being credited to himself, as he completed a short pass to Thomas, who lateraled the ball back to Mendoza for a 15-yard score.
Morris tied a school record with five made field goals (5-for-5) in just his second career game, including a 46-yarder in the second quarter. Morris connected on other attempts of 33, 19, 25 and 38 yards.
It was the third time Cal's school record of five made field goals in a game was tied, matching Mark Jensen vs. Air Force (Sept. 21, 2002) and Matt Anderson vs. UCLA (November 26, 2016).
The two weekly honors are Cal's third and fourth as a member of the ACC. Teddye Buchanan (Linebacker of the Week) and Nohl Williams (Defensive Back of the Week) were recognized on Sept. 9 after the Bears' road win at Auburn.
Cal (4-4, 0-4 ACC) enters its second bye week of the season before returning to action on Nov. 8 at Wake Forest. The game kicks off at 5 p.m. PT and will air on the ACC Network.
