Bears Flip Back Prized Prep QB Commit Jaron Keawe Sagapolutele

The long and winding recruiting saga of 5 star (On3 Sports) Ewa Beach, Hawaii quarterback Jaron Keawe Sagapolutele‍ has seemingly ended with the summer Cal commit coming full circle in transferring back to Cal through the recruiting portal weeks after surprisingly signing with Oregon last month.

After being committed to Cal for six months, the 6-3/205 Campbell High School QB had a last-minute change of heart on signing day, flipping to Oregon on National Letter of Intent Signing Day. But because he officially enrolled at Oregon and because his team was still playing as of Wednesday’s Rose Bowl, Sagapolutele had five days to go into the transfer portal, and after finding the situation in his initial weeks in Eugene not in his comfort zone, the talented QB followed his heart back to Cal, signing this morning with the Bears.

After committing to Cal in July, Sagapolutele said of his reasons for committing to Cal, “I would say it’s everything. They checked off all the boxes, for sure...it’s a place I'm going to continue to develop to get ready for the NFL. I’ll be getting a great degree and I’m just grateful it’s the school I’ll be attending.

“Some things that stood out were that they have everything you need. The coaching is great, the school is great and the program overall is amazing. My relationship with the coaches is so amazing and my relationship with the players is just as strong.

“I’m looking for a place where I can grow my faith, a place where the coaches want me and I get along well with the players as well as a place where I’m not only going to grow just as a player but also as a person.”

The newest Bear followed up a strong junior season where he completed 64.1% of his passes, passing for 3,757 yards and 37 TDs with 12 interceptions for Campbell with an even better senior season, completing 213-of-302 passes for 3,404 yards and 46 TDs with just 3 INT as a senior. Overall, the future Bear passed for 10,653 yards in his Campbell HS career from 2022-24 to set Hawaii all-time passing yardage record.

Also an excellent student with a 3.75 gpa, Sagapolutele will enroll at Cal immediately and begin to attend classes after the 2025 Polynesian Bowl on Fri. January 17 in Honolulu where he’ll compete with fellow Hawaii prep Cal signees Aiden Manutai‍ and Lebron Williams‍.

The Hawaii native was named to the Elite 11 and shined there throughout the week. He held offers from Georgia, Washington, SMU, Colorado before originally signing with Oregon.

"Sagapolutele has clearly established himself as one of the nation's top quarterbacks this offseason," 247Sports national scouting analyst Greg Biggins said in Sagapolutele's July 7 evaluation. "He has really had a great spring and summer including a recent top-11 finish at the prestigious Elite 11 Finals. You can make an argument he has the strongest arm in the country but doesn't just throw all fastballs and has really improved in his ability to change speeds and throw with touch. His deep-ball accuracy is among the best in the country as well and he can really layer the football into tight windows. His release is smooth and tight and he has improved in his ability to make quick decisions and get the ball out on time. ... All the physical tools are there and Keawe Sagapolutele has a very high ceiling and NFL potential if he continues to develop at his current rate."

Sagapolutele becomes the tenth portal signee of Cal’s 2025 portal recruiting class and the 24th overall including prep signees.

Welcome to The University of California! Happy for you and your folks to be joining the Cal family! Best Cal QB since Jared Goff and I honestly believe he can go down as the best California QB ever. Idk if I've ever seen a high school QB who impressed me more than Jaron.

It took a while but he finally made it where he was supposed to be and we're lucky to have him

Jared (Goff) + Aaron (Rodgers) = Jaron

I'm no math major but that seems like incontrovertible proof that he's destined to be a first round pick and a Cal legend
