Bears Announce Future Games Against San Jose State, Wagner

January 30, 2025
9,209

The California football team has agreed to future nonconference games in a home-and-home series with San Jose State, along with a single game in Berkeley against Wagner. The Golden Bears will host the Spartans on Sept. 9, 2028, and travel to San Jose on Sept. 13, 2031. Cal is set to face the Seahawks on Sept. 19, 2026.

Cal is 29-6 overall against San Jose State and it will be the first tilt between the Bay Area squads since 1996, a 45-25 victory for the Bears in the season opener. Cal has won the last nine matchups and has outscored the Spartans 1084-514 in the all-time series.

It will be the first-ever contest on the football field between Cal and Wagner, which plays in the Northeast Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision. The Bears' other nonconference games in 2026 are vs. UCLA (Sept. 5), at BYU (Sept. 12) and vs. UNLV (Oct. 3)

lots of mocking the Wagner game here but the real travesty is SJS. Why are we scheduling a game at SJS?? It's not even like a 4 for 1 type situation. It's a 1 for 1, same as we do with e.g. Auburn.
By making it 1 for 1, Cal doesn't have to pay SJSU for the game in Berkeley. Buy games vs. G5 teams can be expensive. SJSU got $1.1 million to play at USC in 2023.
I'd much rather see us fight through a semi-trap game at Fresno St and get to see family and friends living in that area.
We're never going back to Fresno.

Also their stadium is tiny (18,203 capacity), I will be shocked if we play the game in San Jose rather than convince them to play the home game in Santa Clara.

I was there for the Hawaii game a few years ago and it was full. If Cal fans go to the game….

But how much do we lose by not hosting a game? It can't be good for team morale to play at a high school-sized stadium.

SJS will be a "semi trap game"……

I was 12, sitting in the endzone with a couple of friends, when SJS beat Cal 24-0 in 1966. Not one of Ray Willsey's better days. Cal football - a character-building experience.

Cal has played SJSU 33 times. 31 times at CMS, 2 times at SJSU. Only TWO times in history!

There are usually buyout clauses to pay a set fee instead of playing the return game. Hopefully Cal is in the position to exercise that for the 2031 game. Starting in 2026, SJSU will be in the lowest of the low when it comes to G5 conferences with the departure of the more desirable MWC schools to the reformed Pac. Might be a streaming only media deal. With a stadium that small, SJSU can make a lot more via a non-conference buy game than in ticket sales.

Good info, but I'd trust it more if it didn't say we have a 1-0 conference record against SJSU and that we once played them in Tucson in September.

Maybe the game could be moved as the first American football game played in Gaza?

We're never going back to Fresno.

I made the trip with 2 of my brothers and one of their wives. We left the hotel optimistic and came back not wanting to stay another minute in Fresno. As expected, we were heckled on the way up to the stadium, but we had seen that behavior from both perspectives our whole lives either at Cal's home games or on the road as the visitors. We did have a good amount of food thrown at us and lots of in the face yelling, but we were ok.

Unfortunately, our seats were in a pretty pro Fresno area so we had to lay low and not draw any more attention than we already had. We sat on our hands mostly and didn't cheer and yet we were we pelted frequently with peanuts and popcorn, the end bits of hot dog, pickles and empty beer cups.

One of my brothers and I headed up to the concessions and upon return some guy was cussing my sister in-law out and she was heavily drenched with beer. Apparently it began with this guy and his buddy yelling "efffff yoooouuuu Cal fans!" and they stepped down a couple rows and directly poured their fresh, full beers over the top of my sister's head. She was soaked and upset. Things were escalating but security finally showed up. To their credit, security that is, they sorted it out and kicked those guys and their crew out of the stadium. To their discredit, they told us we had to leave our seats, but offered no solution for where sit for the rest of the game. Seriously.

So we wandered, occasionally stopping to talk to Cal fans and tell our story, which often led to them telling their bad stories too.

It got worse...

Leaving the stadium the aggression of the fans really ramped up and were being pushed, screamed at, and then the glass bottles started flying. Several handfuls of us Cal fans were defending ourselves from flying bottles, I mean lots. We escaped and I think the other Cal fans did too.

Once back at the hotel, my sis showered and came out and announced that she didn't want to stay another minute in town. We all agreed and left and drove back to the Bay.

This is where some will come say how great Fresno is and how great their fan base is, but in my small sample size, that is not my experience.

I speak for my family, except to see my Aunt and Uncle, we are never going back to Fresno.

If we want to increase our bowl eligible chances, we need to schedule a Wagner type game every year.

We do. We play an FCS team every year. I just think it is better to play a California team. I think we should make UC Davis an annual tradition involving the alumni and students.

The problem with Davis is that they might win.
