Cal Completes Historic 3-Game Sweep At Stanford
STANFORD – The California baseball team (13-10, 5-4 ACC) made history Sunday when the Golden Bears completed a three-game sweep of No. 14/23/14 Stanford (15-6, 5-4 ACC) with a 6-5 victory in 10 innings at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. The sweep marked the first time Cal has swept a three-game road series against the Cardinal in recorded history and the first time the Bears had swept the Cardinal in a three-game set since taking three straight in Berkeley in 1992. Ethan Kodama's two-out single in the top of the 10th on a 1-2 pitch plated PJ Moutzouridis with the game-winning run.
Moutzouridis singled to start Cal's top of the 10th and stole second base to move into scoring position. After Jacob French and Seth Gwynn lined out to left field, Dominic Smaldino drew a walk for Kodama's game-winner shot just inside the third-base foul line.
Tremain gave up a one-out single to Trevor Haskins in the 10th before retiring Rintaro Sasaki and Jimmy Nati on foul outs to end the contest and when Smaldino squeezed his glove just in front of Stanford's first-base dugout for the final out a happy group of Bears poured onto the field from for a post-win celebration.
"Stanford is a great program, a historic program, and they are a great team this year," said head coach Mike Neu after his 200th win at Cal. "This was not an easy thing to do. Our guys played with a lot of toughness, a lot of grit. To win any extra-inning game on the road is tough, but to do it to sweep the series, especially against one of the best teams in the country, it shows a lot about our guys."
Tremain (3-1) threw 2.0 scoreless innings as the final of five Cal pitchers to earn the win and improve to 3-1 overall. He allowed two hits and one intentional walk while striking out one.
Toran O'Harran (1-1) took the loss for the Cardinal after allowing Moutzourdis' leadoff single while Kodama's game-winner came off of Trevor Moore.
Cade Campbell (3-5, HR, 2 RBI) had a three-hit day for the Bears including his seventh home run of the season on a solo blast with two outs in the top of the first inning that started the game's scoring. Jacob French (2-5, 2 R, 1 2B) also had a multiple-hit game, while Jarren Advincula drove in a pair.
Haskins (3-6, 4 RBI), Ethan Hott (2-4, R, 2 RBI, BB), Temo Becerra (2-4, 2B, BB) and Charlie Saum (2-4, BB) each had multiple-hit games for the Cardinal.
Cal continues its current season-long nine-game road trip at San Francisco on Monday with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. PT. A live video stream will be available on ESPN+.
