I loved hearing Clemons and his stories about other Cal guys from that era. But it is also a little bittersweet. Listen to the names they rattle off from the roster over the course of a couple years back then (circa 90-94). Absolutely loaded with talent, legit talent. It is still painful how close we were to having serious excellence but for a few decisions, well, just one really. Whats his face Bockrath or whatever, letting go of Bruce Snyder was insane.
Pawlawski and Clemons talk about the toughness of the players and the confidence. Really loved how they talked about how off the charts competition was between he and Reagan Upshaw on defense. Neither one cared about what players they were facing, they just wanted to beat each other to the ball or the QB. Clemons said that he didn't recall any Oline guys he went against because he didn't care. He back pedaled a bit said, well Tony Boselli (SC) and Jonathan Ogden (Ucla), but I had good days against them. Sheesh, that's two NFL Hall Of Famers and he casually says yeah I "ate" against them. The toughness of Cal's Oline and Dline helped sharpen each other.
Also important to hear him say that Cal needs to make a better effort to embrace and bring back the players from the past and further develop a culture of camaraderie and excellence.
Thanks Mike if you read the comments. That was great.
