I loved hearing Clemons and his stories about other Cal guys from that era. But it is also a little bittersweet. Listen to the names they rattle off from the roster over the course of a couple years back then (circa 90-94). Absolutely loaded with talent, legit talent. It is still painful how close we were to having serious excellence but for a few decisions, well, just one really. Whats his face Bockrath or whatever, letting go of Bruce Snyder was insane.

Pawlawski and Clemons talk about the toughness of the players and the confidence. Really loved how they talked about how off the charts competition was between he and Reagan Upshaw on defense. Neither one cared about what players they were facing, they just wanted to beat each other to the ball or the QB. Clemons said that he didn't recall any Oline guys he went against because he didn't care. He back pedaled a bit said, well Tony Boselli (SC) and Jonathan Ogden (Ucla), but I had good days against them. Sheesh, that's two NFL Hall Of Famers and he casually says yeah I "ate" against them. The toughness of Cal's Oline and Dline helped sharpen each other.

Also important to hear him say that Cal needs to make a better effort to embrace and bring back the players from the past and further develop a culture of camaraderie and excellence.

Thanks Mike if you read the comments. That was great.

he didn't let go of bruce. Bruce left. He left because chancelor tien wouldn't pony up the money to keep him. Now hiring gilby over mooch was a huge mistake (brockrath?), but bruce leaving wasn't on the AD.

By letting Bruce go I did mean that Snyder left. But I guess I have been under the misconception that being the new AD, Bockrath made a power move and wanted to bring in "his guy" and would not agree to pay Bruce. Ultimately, the chancellor would have to approve too, but I thought I had heard that Bockrath was the problem. Doesn't matter really, either way it still hurts that we were seemingly poised to do really well, but instead we lost the momentum.

The truth lies in the middle. Tien hired Bockrath to be his hatchet man with Snyder and a lot of other stuff.

Paws can tell the story a lot better than I can, though.

Should have retained Snyder by matching ASU, but Mooch would have knocked it out of the park. Gilby was a disaster, but even he initially had relatively successful seasons with the talent he inherited from Snyder.
