Meghin Williams Named Women’s Basketball General Manager

BERKELEY – The California women's basketball program has hired Meghin Williams as general manager, head coach Charmin Smith announced Thursday. Williams joins the Golden Bears after spending the last year as an assistant athletics director, chief of staff for Virginia Tech women's basketball. At Cal, her responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, managing revenue-sharing initiatives, NIL partnerships, driving revenue growth, roster-building strategies and overall program operations.

"Meghin has the exact skill set and experience that is required for a women's basketball program to remain competitive in today's college athletics landscape," Smith said. "She has an excellent track record of generating revenue growth, increasing fan and donor engagement and understanding student-athlete needs, and has been a vital piece of the success of some of the top programs in the country."

As general manager at Virginia Tech during the 2024-25 season, Williams was responsible for donor relations, NIL activities, budgeting and student-athlete engagement. She implemented a strategic NIL fundraising plan, managed the program's operating budget and oversaw several key capital projects - which included a locker room and women's basketball offices.

Prior to Virginia Tech, Williams served as assistant to the athletics director and director of operations at the University of North Carolina from 2019-2021. She managed the team's operating budget and daily business operations, identified new business opportunities and drove a significant increase in donor revenue. Williams also oversaw daily operational activities for the marketing, community and operations departments.

From 2018-19, Williams was an assistant director of internal operations at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, where she managed donor engagement activities that resulted in a 110% increase in donor memberships. She also was the director of operations at Princeton University from 2016-18 where she assisted with donor relations and implemented a marketing plan that saw a 110% increase in student attendance.

"I'm incredibly honored and excited to step into this role as the landscape of collegiate athletics continues to evolve," Williams said. "It's a privilege to help carry the momentum of the success that Charmin, the staff and the student-athletes have established. I am grateful to be a part of the continued growth of this amazing program at one of the most prestigious universities in the country."

A graduate of the University of Nebraska, Williams helped the Cornhuskers to two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances during her playing career, from 2009-13.

New women's basketball GM roles and responsibilities, "At Cal, her responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, managing revenue-sharing initiatives, NIL partnerships, driving revenue growth, roster-building strategies and overall program operations." No mention of her position on the Org chart. Would like to know more.

I'm sure there is no one on this thread who could possibly be curious about this development.

It was "announced" by Charmin....no Knowlton or Lyons quotes. I take that to mean she is answering to Charmin?

My speculation too. Will look for some clarity

Seven Questions:

1. Why do we need a GM for WBB when we don't have a GM for MBB or any other sports except Football (and for Football, it is not quite clear who reports to who)?

2. How many of the teams in the WBB Final Four or Elite Eight or Sweet 16 have a GM?

3. WBB Roster is 13 or 15 players and our average game attendance is around 1,500. Do we really a Head Coach + 10 Assistant coaches/staff and now a GM to manage that if we had a competent AD? (That is almost 1 highly paid staffer for each payer!)
4. Is this another one of Knowlton's having highly paid layer after layer of mid-managers in the bloated Athletic Department?

5. Who reports to who? GM usually reports to the Chancellor/President of the University (Stanford model) or the AD (the highly disliked Cal model). Then why is announcement of the hiring of the GM made by the Head Coach without even a quote from AD (maybe he was too far away being in Colorado Springs to send a quote)?

6. This new WBB GM played WBB in Nebraska and was on the Athletic Department staff in North Carolina and Virginia Tech, all far far away from California and West Coast (1,300 miles or away). Does she have any connection to anything less than 1,300 miles from California?

7. Two teams from California were in the Elite Eight and one was in the Final Four. Were there any qualified person with connection to California or at least West Coast available for this job?

Lots of questions!

Go Bears!

She's from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. Easy to find her hometown by looking up bio on Nebraska site.

As a point of reference, Cal MBB has a head coach, an associate head coach and 4 assistant coaches. Plus, a 12-member support staff (including 5 graduate assistants). That's 18 members!!

Cal WBB has a head coach, an associate head coach, and 3 assistant coaches. Plus, a 6-member support staff (including the new general manager). That's 11-members!

Really?

And you are begrudging Charmin Smith for hiring a general manager? Get real!

I did not know that because that very relevant info was not in the announcement.

SFCALBear72, Don't feed the troll. calbear80 is best ignored. He stayed away all season while the Bears were doing well. He's by no means a real fan and he's a Charmin-hater to boot.

calbear80, one of your issues was that Cal WBB averaged only 1500 this year. The team won 25 games. Just curious, how many games did you attend?

According to Cal web site we averaged 2,200 fans last year.

Missing the relevancy? So that Cal would at least have a shot at the best player in SoCal and maybe California? Right, when was the last time that happened??? No hints, give it your best shot.
It's 2025, not 1980. Cal's best sports have an international footprint, including the women's hoops team of this year. Some of the biggest donors of Cal women's sports are not in California.
If she was originally from Weirton, West Virginia, what would that have mattered?

I've been to Weirton West Virginia. Ron Williams of the Warriors was from there.

I think it will be great to have someone focused on trying to bring in the revenue now necessary to compete. But I am afraid we have reached a level where you now need a couple of very large donors instead of many small ones. And that usually comes from building relationships at the very highest levels. Rich Lyons raising money is what we really need.

Maybe Meghin's first assignment is to work on Lyons?

Or maybe Ron Rivera's wife, Stephanie, who played point guard for the Bears could be a catalyst for discussions with wealthy donors.

When I worked in teaching hospitals, we used to start by getting a wealthy person to be active on our board or on one of our board committees. Once they felt a part of the organization, their donations then came naturally, often as a remembrance for one of their relatives. Perhaps we need some type of program advisory committee that could build that kind of interest over time. Although, the need we have for money is immediate.

Spoke to Meghin at lunch Saturday before the Showcase. Pleasant and professional. When asked about her fit in the organization, she shared that she and Charmin are co-equals.

Is there a way for a coach to contribute some of their salary to an NIL fund? Time will tell, but I am just not certain that hiring more administrative staff and increasing program expenses further is going to be the answer. We need to be able to get more money to the players we are going after in this environment.

I can tell you that it has allowed for more communication with some donors that might have been giving to other sports....
annarborbear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The vast majority of women's college basketball programs in the country lose money and have to be subsidized by their universities in some fashion. And the vast majority have limited donors, and not the kind of people who will want to or be able to make large on-going NIL contributions. So this is the shake-out period until Congress and the NCAA can come up with a more sustainable model. Unfortunately, we are now stuck right in the middle of it.

Indiana eliminated 25 administrative and staff positions in their athletic department. They claim it was done to allocate savings to the money that the university will be allowed to directly pay athletes once the House settlement goes into effect. But, the vast majority of the money Indiana spends in that way will certainly go to football and men's basketball players.

Indiana, for what it's worth, has a director of women's basketball operations but not a GM for the team. Cal now has both a GM and a director of women's basketball operations; maybe someone should ask the head coach (or AD) whether there is overlap between the two positions.

Here you go! Found this information on Calbears.com. Do these two job descriptions sound like one and the same?

Nope!

Meghin Williams was named general manager for the California women's basketball team in April 2025. Williams joined the Golden Bears after spending the 2024-25 season as an assistant athletics director, chief of staff for Virginia Tech women's basketball. At Cal, her responsibilities include, but are not limited to, managing revenue-sharing initiatives, NIL partnerships, driving revenue growth, roster-building strategies and overall program operations.

Tess Romine-Black enters her fourth season as the Director of Basketball Operations for the Women's Basketball program. In this role, she oversees all operations, including budget management, team travel, student managers, and the execution of ancillary events such as the annual banquet and initiatives like the Race for Change (raising over $20,000 for Cal's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Justice Office) and the Raising the B.A.R (Basketball Activism Representation) Invitational.
