Yeah, most teams have always had a basketball ops role

GM role is needed in the NIL world. I don't think you want the head coach talking to agents and negotiating NIL with agents and players, except maybe as a closer

Time will tell, but I am just not certain that hiring more administrative staff and increasing program expenses further is going to be the answer. We need to be able to get more money to the players we are going after in this environment.
Indiana eliminated 25 administrative and staff positions in their athletic department. They claim it was done to allocate savings to the money that the university will be allowed to directly pay athletes once the House settlement goes into effect. But, the vast majority of the money Indiana spends in that way will certainly go to football and men's basketball players.

Indiana, for what it's worth, has a director of women's basketball operations but not a GM for the team. Cal now has both a GM and a director of women's basketball operations; maybe someone should ask the head coach (or AD) whether there is overlap between the two positions.
Here you go! Found this information on Calbears.com. Do these two job descriptions sound like one and the same?

Nope!

Meghin Williams was named general manager for the California women's basketball team in April 2025. Williams joined the Golden Bears after spending the 2024-25 season as an assistant athletics director, chief of staff for Virginia Tech women's basketball. At Cal, her responsibilities include, but are not limited to, managing revenue-sharing initiatives, NIL partnerships, driving revenue growth, roster-building strategies and overall program operations.

Tess Romine-Black enters her fourth season as the Director of Basketball Operations for the Women's Basketball program. In this role, she oversees all operations, including budget management, team travel, student managers, and the execution of ancillary events such as the annual banquet and initiatives like the Race for Change (raising over $20,000 for Cal's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Justice Office) and the Raising the B.A.R (Basketball Activism Representation) Invitational.
