Congrats, JKS! Just think: He managed to beat out every single player on the North Carolina team!
not the last time he will win this, i predict (not really going out on a limb, am i)
Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele was named ACC Rookie of the Week following his week one performance in Cal's season-opening win at Oregon State, announced by the conference office on Tuesday morning. This is the first weekly conference honor of the true freshman quarterback's career.
The Ewa Beach, Hawaii, native led the Golden Bears to a 34-15 victory over the Beavers in Corvallis, Oregon, in his collegiate debut last Saturday. Sagapolutele was 20-of-30 for 234 yards passing with three touchdowns. He completed the first nine pass attempts of his collegiate career and converted two touchdown passes on the first two offensive possessions of the game against the Beavers.

Very psyched to see Jaron in person at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
Please let the first play be a 50 yard bomb. Please make this happen. It will be the talk of college football next week…
Go Bears!
Maybe not the talk of college football but he's already getting insane hype (well deserved too) I'm not one for PFF's catch-all grades but he was their highest grades QB in all of CFB for weeks 0/1, they had him with the highest percentage of "big time throws", I've seen people gushing about him as the (very) early favorite for 1OA draft pick in '28, he rocketed up to top 10 in lots of early Heisman lists, and people are swooning over his composure, arm talent, and accuracy. This is all just after his first game, if he puts up big numbers on Saturday the nation may not be watching us handle Texas Southern but there will undoubtedly be continued buzz around the sport. Hell it annoys me but I've already seen multiple media members do segments about where he might transfer after this season and how much money he could securesycasey said:BearForceOne said:

I don't think that anything that happens against Texas Southern will become the talk of college football.

I have been Sagapolutele's biggest fan since before we offered, and I am all for hyperbole, but didn't Boller start as a true freshman in the 1999 season opener victory over Rutgers? Hard to believe there were not others in Cal history.

I don't remember this game much, if at all, but per Cal Athletics, "Freshman quarterback Kyle Boller replaced Samuel Clemons in the middle of the second quarter." (https://calbears.com/news/1999/9/4/207731246.aspx)
Based on that, Kyle Boller did not start the game and was technically not a true freshman QB who started the first game of his true freshman season. That said, he did lead the Bears to victory in the first game of the season as a true freshman after he replaced Sam Clemons.
That said, if JKS can develop into a Kyle Boller (or Goff or Rodgers), that would be fantastic! Cal will need to surround him with playmakers so he can showcase his talents better. Also, this could help Cal bounce back and become nationally relevant in football, again. Just in time for the next conference realignment.

Oh, just from the box score I saw Boller played the majority of the game in a big victory and Clemons was 2 of 2, so it looked like Clemons was in for mop up duty. Strange to pull your starter after he has completed the only 2 passes he has attempted. Why even start him then? Sure glad they didn't do that with Brown and Sagapolutele.
I wonder how many programs have never started a freshman at QB in their 120+ year history?

Pure speculation on my part here, but maybe Tedford made a deal with Clemons that he'd be the starting QB for the first game and wanted to keep his word even if he knew that he would end up going to Boller for most of the game.

This was in 1999, so would have been Holmoe.

Yeah, Boller underperformed until Tedford arrived (his senior year?) and started playing checkers with him and all that.

Tedford arrived in 2002 after we had a miserable 1-10 season the previous year. And his very first play call? A bomb by Boller against Baylor. When I saw this, it was such a statement, to say we are back!
That's why I think it will be so cool if we call a play to let Jaron air one out on the very first play, to make a statement!

Actually it was a lateral to a halfback who threw the bomb. Still cool!

Terrell Williams threw the TD on the first play.
RB Terrell Williams was 2 of 2 for 78 yards and 1 TD.
Back up QB Reggie Robertson was almost as good, 2 of 2 for 64 yards and 1 TD.
