BERKELEY – Cal head football coach Justin Wilcox announced Monday that Geep Chryst has agreed to become the Golden Bears' tight ends coach. Chryst has spent the majority of the past three decades coaching in the NFL most recently as the tight ends coach with Denver (2017-18).

"Geep is a highly respected football coach who has experienced success at the highest level of our game," Wilcox said. "He has a strong understanding of what we are doing on offense, and he will do a great job of coaching and developing our tight ends to maximize their potential. We are pleased that we were able to attract Geep to our program."

"I'm thrilled to be part of Justin Wilcox's staff at Cal," Chryst said. "With many of the challenges of the 2020 COVID season hopefully behind us, I look forward to representing this great university. I know the great football tradition of the Golden Bears."

Chryst was an NFL offensive coordinator at San Diego (1999-2000) and in the final campaign of a five-year run with San Francisco (2011-15) after coaching 49ers' quarterbacks in the first four. He also coached tight ends at Carolina for five seasons (2006-10) and had two stints with Arizona (1996-98, 2001-03) coaching tight ends his first season with the Cardinals in 1996 and quarterbacks his final five. Chryst started his NFL career in Chicago (1991-95) working in quality control and as the Director of Research.

Chryst began his coaching career in the collegiate ranks in 1987 as the quarterbacks coach at Wisconsin-Platteville. He was also an offensive graduate assistant at Wisconsin for one season in 1988 and spent two campaigns at Wyoming coaching the offensive line (1989) and quarterbacks (1990) before moving on to the NFL.

Chryst comes a strong football and athletics family that includes his father George Chryst (Wisconsin-Platteville head football coach and athletic director, Wisconsin football offensive line); brothers Paul and Rick Chryst (Wisconsin football head coach; former Mid-American Conference Commissioner); and sons Keller and Jackson Chryst (college quarterbacks at Stanford/Tennessee; Oregon State).

Wilcox spent one season as the defensive coordinator for Paul Chryst at Wisconsin in 2016 before being hired as the head coach at Cal.

Credentials are outstanding. Tight end coach and maybe QB coach as well? Hope he can recruit as well.

Musgrave is a former QB and probably wants to hold onto the QB coaching title but since they worked together before I can see Musgrave treating him more as an "offensive collaborator" (assistant OC and QB coach) than strictly a TE coach. Kind of like what we had with Wilcox, Sirmon and TDR on the defensive side a collaboration between three DCs.

WEAK hire!!!

Wilcox made WEAK decision by hiring immoral coach who cannot be trusted with young men.

Geep Chryst let his own son go to stanfurd. How can we trust him with other people's sons?

WEAK!!!!!!!!!

Son fell for Furd hype, but once in learned the truth and transferred out. Father now hates Furd.

Or something like that.
