Hmm, I get terrible cell reception at CMS and they don't provide wifi. That could be an issue.

But in theory, you should be able to pull the tix up on a tablet before leaving home and just bring the tablet with you if you have no phone.

Yup. I get basically no cell reception. I have declined the mobile ticket option every year up to now solely out of reliability concerns, even though it would be far more convenient for me. At least they had better scanners in 2019. Those old handheld scanners were a nightmare. Fingers crossed this works come Sept.

There probably will Be push back. I can deal with it ,but some people I know with flip phones will have a problem. I am surprised by why they would do this. Maybe its the fear of someone infected touching a tickets. Most likely its a cost saving measure.

smh I'm pretty sure you should still be able to print them on paper at home and bring that to have scanned. Maybe call and see if they can confirm. They should be PDFs (that's what other "ticketless" venues do). I will probably do this too, at least at first, to have as a backup. Up to now though it was just easier to have them send me my tickets than do all this myself. It's absolutely to cut cost.

Why would I want to bring a tablet to a football game?..

Why not take a screenshot?

When seeking a phone plan, I had a problem: I'm home a lot and when I'm away from home, I almost never use the internet.

So I found a service that gave me the option of not using data. But if I needed data, I could just flip a switch and have it and be charged based on usage. (My service since switched it around and I now pay $5 a month for data up to 1 GB.)

When I'd order from, say Target online to pick up in store, I'd take a screenshot of the barcode. And it would usually work.

I'm guessing a screenshot of the ticket on your phone would work, too. Maybe?

You could, but if you've ever attended an event with the AXS app, that has rotating barcodes every minute. Not saying that the ATO would use that technology, but you never know.

Also, it would be good if Cal provided decent cell coverage and/or wifi in the stadium if they're going to do this.

Because we're teaming up with Apple: All fans can purchase the following package:

Transparent, "perfect-sized" stadium bag, with Cal mask, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes and an iPad mini, all for the low low price of $500 (would cost $550, if you went to purchase those items separately)!

Bad move that will adversely impact the number of elderly fans in attendance. Not everyone has a smart phone.

Yeah functional wifi would be nice. Or at least cell repeaters. I usually have no problem with service outside the stadium but in/under the press box it drops to worse than dial up speeds.

What would be really nice would be if Cal would develop an app-based in-stadium only mobile subscription service that would provide high speed wifi and access to things like stats, replays, media feeds, concierge concessions, and maybe even "insider" things like field audio, sideline video, "all-22" replays, etc. If done right (BIG if when it comes to Cal) It would both better serve fans and provide an additional revenue stream.

I use screenshots all the time at events - great for texting tix to your friends. Much easier than 10 years ago when having someone run late meant running out to the gate, dropping at will call, or whatever. But as others have said, the rotating barcodes need internet access - but seems like they mostly are used for high demand events to control scalpers/fake tickets (and funnel resale fees back to the event).

I've also noticed that using prepaid sub-brands or MVNOs have greatly throttled or completely worthless internet at large events compared to the full service subscribers. And there are many tiers of bad service related to how much you are paying for cellular internet.

But yeah, if Cal isn't on top of getting some form of internet access to supplement what they have now at the stadium, there could be terrible lines and backups.

Improving the internet will cost them much more than the savings realized by elimination of printed tickets. Its hard enough to get in as it is.

So true. It's really frustrating that they don't have dedicated lines for season ticket holders and people without bags.

I technically have 3 iPad Minis (I actually have one, but my dad has one under my account (a hand me down) and my mom has one. They also have bigger iPads under my account.

The iPad mini is awesome. It's the device I use the most (I have 3 iPads and 3 iPhones -- 2 of the iPhones are old with bad battery life and barely any resale value).

A reply from Jim Knowlton

Great to hear from you - I hope you are well!

We will still be able to provide printed tickets but there are many good
reasons to go virtual (including that our old fanbase has become Zoom and
iPhone experts during the pandemic!).

I have cc'd Joe who can share some of the benefits to our fans and our
department.

When I saw I had a note from you I thought it was going to be about the
100% capacity without masks and how excited you were!

Stay safe and I am sure I will see you in CMS soon!

Good to hear from you! Yes mobile tickets are being used by a majority of the sports industry now. Its become the norm. I know that is not what all fans desire so with that in mind we will still have a print option for fans who desire. You just need to work with your service rep and they can print and mail you your season tickets. Also if you have mobile tickets and want to send one of the tickets or four of the tickets to someone else you simply will use their phone number or email address to transfer them. Once you do that the person you transferred to would have the ticket and could enter on their own at CMS or Haas.

That s what I have been told by my Rep.
in fact I have made arrangements to pick up my tix in person in August. (That is the most secure alternative for me.)

I heard back from my rep. This is what he wrote. Still not feeling great that there will be adequate cell/wifi coverage before the first game.

Nice to hear from you. Thank you for bringing up these great points! I know the department has been working with campus to find ways to upgrade the reception and wifi at the stadium. I believe it should be in the works but not sure when it will be completed. As for our older fans and those without smart phones, we will offer paper tickets to them, although it won't be the nice fancy tickets like we had in the past. It would be something a little more basic done in house, especially with the budget being a little rough from over the last year and a half. Hope this brings a little peace of mind. It will be a little bit of a process to transition over to mobile but I think it's something that we'll be seeing throughout the country. Plus, it never hurts to go a little green!

Long lines and a disaster in the making but let's give them a chance. I would print at home, if at all possible.

If they are using print tickets at all, that means no rotating bar codes. Hopefully.

Screenshots of electronic tickets work well, and no cell service would be required at the stadium if.one does that in advance.

But there will definitely be some learning going on (ie lines) for the first few games.
