A mix of 14 former players, returning players and walk-ons celebrated their graduations from Cal over the weekend after earning their degrees.

Current returning players who graduated include:

  • Chase Garbers -The veteran QB came to Cal in 2017, redshirting his true freshman season. He took over the starting role from injured QB Ross Bowers and never gave it up from there, completing 375-of-611 passes (61.4%) for 4049 yards with 34 touchdowns and 16 interceptions for a 130.17 passer efficiency rating that ranks 11th on Cal's all-time list. Because the covid-shortened 2020 season doesn’t count against eligibility, Garbers has two more seasons of eligibility remaining with Cal should he enroll in a grad program or one of Cal’s new certification programs after this season. • Kekoa Crawford -The veteran wide receiver transfer from Michigan has spent his last two seasons at Cal after enrolling at Michigan in 2016. The sixth year senior has 55 career catches for 794 yards receiving with five touchdown receptions as well as three rushes for 15 yards and eight kick returns for 139 yards for a total of 948 all-purpose yards. • Monroe Young -Though it seems like Young just arrived at Cal, the redshirt soph graduated early in three years after enrolling at Cal in 2018 and redshirting. Has played in nine games all off the bench over the last two seasons, primarily on special teams and as a backup wide receiver, adding two receptions for 15 yards. Young had an impressive spring in 2020, potentially putting himself in position to see more passes this season. BA in Legal Studies
  • Jake Tonges -After redshirting as a 2017 freshman, Tonges has recorded 25 receptions for 342 yards with two touchdowns, as well as five tackles on special teams. The reshirt junior had career highs of 13 receptions for 262 yards (20.2 yards per reception), as well as three tackles as a 2019 sophomore. BA in American Studies
  • Gavin Reinwald -The redshirt junior tight end has played in 29 games with five starts and accumulated 27 receptions for 260 yards and two touchdowns. He posted all of his career highs as a 2019 sophomore when he had 14 catches, 146 yards receiving and two touchdown catches. BA in Environmental Economics and Policy
  • Daniel Scott -The redshirt junior safety has played in 25 games with four starts, with career totals of 40 tackles, one interception at Stanford as a 2019 sophomore, one pass breakup, two passes defended, one fumble recovery and one quarterback hurry over the last three seasons since redshirting as a true freshman in 2017. BA in Sociology
  • Gabe Cherry -The redshirt junior DE came to Cal in 2017 and played in his lone game off the bench as a 2018 redshirt freshman vs. Idaho State. Cherry entered the transfer portal in the spring but opted to return after a season-ending injury to starting DE Brett Johnson. BA in Film.

Former players:

  • Tevin Paul -The talented former DT, DE opted out of 2020 and has decided to forego his remaining eligibility. After arriving in 2016 and redshirting, Paul played in 35 of 38 possible games and made 21 starts in three seasons, adding career totals of 90 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 6 sacks, five pass breakups, five passes defended and five quarterback hurries. Graduated players opting not to return with eligibility:

  • Devon Modster -After spending two seasons at UCLA and one at Palomar College, the redshirt senior QB played in 12 games with six starts and completed 113-of-202 passes (55.9%) for 1376 yards with nine touchdowns and five interceptions for a 122.91 passing efficiency rating while adding 58 rushes for 202 yards and one touchdown. BA in Sociology
  • Poutasi Poutasi -After redshirting as a freshman in 2017, the redshirt junior OG played in one game in 2020 and in three road games off the bench at Oregon, Utah and UCLA in 2019. BA in Sociology

Graduating non-scholarship players:

  • Evan King: -After coming in from Menlo School in 2017, King played in one game off the bench at Stanford as a 2019 sophomore over the last four seasons since his arrival at Cal in 2017. BA in American Studies.

  • Zach Angelillo -The former linebacker turned fullback in 2020 came to Cal from from San Joaquin Memorial High School in Fresno and graduated in an impressive three years. The reshirt soph is testing the transfer waters through the portal, potentially looking for a more fullback-friendly offense. Angelillo volunteered on several Saturdays since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic with United Presbyterian Church in his hometown of Fresno providing groceries for his community
  • Matt Horwitz -The redshirt junior linebacker came to Cal in 2017 from University High School. A popular player on the team, Horwitz earned the Dink Artal Award as Cal's Scout Team Player of the Year in 2019. BA in Business Administration
  • Jack Beeman -The redshirt soph did not see action at Cal after coming in from Del Oro High School in Loomis. BA in Legal Studies

We don't always hear about everyone who graduates or what they studied so we wanted to highlight that here to honor the most recent crop of Cal grads.

Thanks for sharing. So great to see when it happens. I think many vastly underestimate how hard it is to put in that effort both on the field and in the classroom.

So much respect for those guys.

+1

Graduating from UC Berkeley alone is quite an accomplishment. Doing so while also attending to the requirements of being a Cal football player is extremely impressive. Congratulations to each of them.
