Annual Lair thread...

Headed up to Camp Gold on Saturday. I guess there will be some "pandemic modifications", but not too many, it sounds like. My family doesn't have "our own week". We have been to weeks 2, 6 and "mini-week". First time for 8th week. We've met BI folks before. PM me if you want to say hi, especially if you have a son who is 12 and/or a daughter who is 9.

I know Unit2Sucks has been up there this year (no secret, he posted it). Anybody else?

Bummer to have had to miss 2020, as my kids are in their "prime Lair years".

Go Bears!

We'll be up there - Camp Blue, though. My kids are a bit younger - 7 and 4.

I have never been to the Lair of the Bear, but I will be going to the food and wine weekend there at the end of August. Has anyone been to that?

That's awesome, enjoy your time up there. Hopefully your kids have a good set of similar-age kids to pal around with.

Mine little ones had a blast even with a reduced set of campers and a less dense camp has some advantages. One of mine won disco Bingo and having fewer people certainly helped juice the odds!

Hopefully they've ironed out some of the early camp issues we deal with in Week 3.

Gold Cheats! Blue 8th week all the way!

Kidding. But yeah, packing up the car tonight. Best week of the year, every year.

Thanks for reminding me: My job is to bring up the "special" Camp Gold Week 8 bats for the softball game!

I'm a retired Camp Blue week 6 camper. Always a fun time and went over 20 years. , 2 daughters that went to Cal also worked as staffers. Did go to the Bear Music fest 3 years and really enjoyed that.

You would go Camp Blue. Typical GMP.

Lol. We actually started at Gold as subletters and moved to Blue when a spot opened in 2019.

I remember when you said gold long ago. It (the whole lair) is tough to get in. I am doing my first real week with a kid (2y) next week (9). He visited at 2months in 2019, but we only stayed a couple nights.

Most of my family opted out, but hopefully we can meet at the lake.

We are back from Camp Gold. Good times.

I guess a big piece of news is that a 10 yr old at Camp Blue tested positive for COVID on Thursday and a fair percentage of campers there left, upon hearing the news. (Am I allowed to say that? I am presuming so, as the parents even released the kid's name to everyone at the three camps.) A staffer at Gold told me that it was the first time all summer that that had happened. Interesting: With the positive coming just under 5 days in, it is totally unclear if the kid caught it before the Lair, or at the Lair. They had to have a negative test to get in, but that doesn't really indicate much, vis-a-vis the timing..

As for the Lair itself, we had a great time, as usual, but Camp Gold seems to be resting on its laurels just a bit. From everything I hear, if I had it to do over again, I might have requested Blue when we started going again, three years ago. Instead, I did not request a specific camp and was assigned Gold. It is great though, for sure.

It was our first time Week 8. I was pretty surprised that I knew NOBODY there this time, as my Cal connections are fairly wide spread, plus folks from our community usually represent. Fortunately, I feel pretty comfortable mingling with other Cal people, many of whom are only separated from me by one or two degrees.

Hey Big C...sorry to hear that Camp Gold seems to be resting on it's laurels....Pat Graffis is the Camp Gold manager and bleeds blue and gold and is a great guy who I staffed with while we were going to Cal.

That was sort of an off-hand observation on my part and perhaps not a fair one, considering I haven't been to Camp Blue in 40 years (one week at Camp Oski eight years ago). Pat seems like a great guy and we have enjoyed our three years at Gold.

Lair update, vis-a-vis COVID:

After the one kid tested positive on Thursday of Week 8, there were four more positives from Camp Blue campers who got tested when they got home (plus another who had symptoms, but tested negative).

This week, seven others from Week 8 (including three from Camp Gold) have reported to the Lair that they have since tested positive. (By now, of course, exposure could've been post-Lair.)

Good thing most Lair goers are probably fully vaccinated (including everybody in my family over age eleven). This Delta variant sucks; I just wanna get back to normal.
