Hiring black head football coaches!? You mean like what the Furd has been doing? Why would we wanta be like the Furd?
Not that it matters, but all the black coaches Furd has had (Dennis Green, Ty Willingham, and of course David Shaw) have all been fairly successful there.
I was being sarcastic.
I know, just an interesting observation.

Who are we kidding - this AD sucks and has no plan for finding a quality coach. I think we are stuck with Wilcox and have to roll the dice annually on new coordinators.

The AD so far has extended Wilcox's contract prematurely And then there is basketball. How the heck do we trust this moron?
What we need to do is stop going through the athletic department to hire coaches and recruit players. The world has changed, and opportunity abounds.

Lol, but you may actually have something here

I prefer my head coaches like I prefer my starting QBs.

I'm as far left as you'll find on a board like this and I think going out to specifically hire a Black coach is a horrible idea.

Next coach of your California Golden Bears:

Smart. NFL experience. Bay Area connections. Likely a very good recruiter.

It's still stunning that the only real serious candidates were Marvin Lewis and Hue Jackson.
It's still stunning that Hue jackson wanted the job but Dykes was hired instead because we have standards.

Intriguing. But will he stand up for Cal or will he kneel?

Why not give Burl Toler a shot? I think his units are doing well, despite the general dumpster fire that is Cal football.

Has Tony Elliot been mentioned?
In addition to his success as coach at Clemson, his academic background is stellar (highest gpa in the team while earning an industrial engineering degree, and working as an engineer for 2 years before becoming a collegiate coach).

Of Saltine-Americans:
Pete Kwiatkowski
Brent Pry
Alex Grinch

If the price is right...

Clemson has amazing talent on offense right now and they are absolutely floundering. I don't think Tony Elliott will have a job at the end of the season.

Let's face it, picking coaches based on personality or skin color is a complete crap shoot. There isn't one person on this board who would have been excited by the Tedford or Snyder hires, two rather boring, middle aged white men. But at least in Tedford's case there was a long time, very successful head coach who supported him, Steve Gladstone. At the very least Knowlton needs to consult successful ADs (eg. Barry Alvarez) or our own successful coaches (Jack Clark, Ron Rivera, etc.) and use their expertise in picking the next coach. Knowing how a DC does at Georgia, for example, is next to irrelevant in determining if he'll be a good HC at Cal.

Tony Elliot is on his way out for misusing elite talent against mediocre talent.

If he recruited that talent then that's better than what we have now.

My only criteria is someone who has no historical ties to our program. For a program as spectacularly mediocre as we have been for the better part of a century, I don't know why our fans so frequently pine for former players and coaches. Well I do and it's due to familiarity but we should be looking for success. Let's go find a great up and coming DC or OC or smaller program HC and see how that goes.

I am not willing to state outright that the next coach has to be a person of color but we've given white males plenty of chances and it's obviously not working out lol so what do we have to lose? I think the best person for this job is likely to be a former D1 player and most of them are black men so ...

Unless of course the big donors still have issues.
The crap we saw in Memorial Stadium yesterday had nothing to do with the color of Wilcox's skin.

The biggest issue with donors is not skin color, but just convincing them to hire a decent candidate that may cost us a bit more than expected, i.e. Mel Tucker leaving Colorado for $5.5 million from Michigan State.

many here are despairing the loss of DeRuyter...how about him for HC?

From my Duck fan friends, we are welcome to take him back. Probably some knee jerking after the Furd game. However, with first class talent, the Oregon defense has been, to say the least, inconsistent. TDR is a solid, experienced DC so I'm not sure what is the problem.

If Wilcox is fired, the next coach likely will be more offense minded, and TDR probably needs more time to pass from his Fresno State disastrous head coach gig.

Also convincing them to buy out the current coaching staff -and- pay for a new staff.

Won't be easy to do that unless you can convince the donors that the new guy, whomever he is, is an A-plus hire. I would guess major donors are tired of paying up to replace Dykes with Wilcox and to replace Jones with Fox.

Above all else, to be a great replacement, the next coaching staff has to do much, much better in recruiting. If the next staff recruits like this one, the results will be pretty much the same.

Speaking of Cal not having any Black head coaches, is there a reason why Cal has barely had any Black starting QBs?

I'm writing this in the aftermath of watching a short Black/Asian QB dominate the "No. 1" NFL team.
