I loved when they piped in this tune early in the fourth quarter.

Actually, Free Fallin' was played on the PA right near the end of the first half, just before we had to punt again on 4th down. Who the heck is choosing the PA music? I love Tom Petty, but that's not the message to send to the team or the Cal fans! I recall they also played a song referencing wolves at the Nevada game last month.

You could hear it on the TV broadcast too. Total bush league bull****, trolling your own team. If it were up to me that person would be fired. You're either with us or against us. Nowhere else would you get away with a stunt like that. In many ways it's a microcosm of everything that's wrong with the department.

Agreed. Very inappropriate for the hometown crew to play Free Fallin'. Even though today was the anniversary of Tom Petty's death, I'm fairly certain they didn't just play the song as a tribute to Tom, they were sending a message.

The person doing it is just mimicking the same predictable, boring stuff heard at sporting events for decades. Whoever got the job is the cousin of the brother-in law of some donor or media type.
Equally unimaginative at basketball games

Also the Mic Men are now brutally bad, can't get stadium cheers going (although there is no one around for those anyway), just being completely inept at getting fans to do anything other than stand around in confusion.

Regardless of the feelings toward Wilcox at the moment...and they're not particularly positive, if I were the head coach hearing that over my own stadium's PA...I'd probably be pretty peeved. The whole PA crew should be shown the door, too.

Played before punting? That's gameday experience humor.

The piped in music seemed more obnoxious than usual today. Just a few minutes into the game and we have a replay review. good opportunity for the Cal Band to play, right? Nope -- we get Sweet Child O' Mine at earsplitting decibels.

In the Tom Petty documentary "Running Down A Dream" Tom recalls George calling him up the day after Roy Orbison had passed away.

He said to Tom, "Aren't you glad it wasn't you?"

This, and the inexplicable scoreboard highlighting of the tweet (mentioned in another thread), is the most depressing aspect of the entire Cal Football experience for me.

We can't control what goes on on the field, but this just a level of astounding incompetence, even for Cal Marketing.

Who hires/approves of the people for these jobs?
How many people attending feel their stadium experience is enhanced by what they do?
I doubt the person who chose "Sweet Child o' Mine" was born when it was released(1987).

I love Tom Petty's music. But not within a football game. I want to hear Cal Band. And when I'm not hearing them I want to hear Cal yells. And when I'm not hearing them I want to hear my friends and family, who I don't hear over the b.s. crap that's being piped in.

But I expressed myself to the AD, who didn't hear me.

Well at least they didn't play "this is the end"'by the Doors...

Only one non Cal song should have been played by the PA system - "Help" at game's end. Would have been applicable!
