In our family the most successful (money and career wise) person is my Coug BIL. Not only did he 'just' go to WSU but he didn't even graduate. He's in the Nordstrom c-suite and will retire from there after a multi decade career. Just work hard and have a great attitude kids. It's not where you go to school. My BIL is also one of the best people I know. Paying to get your kid into some college seems like a sure way to fxck up your kid.

Nice thoughts but I'm willing to bet your BIL is a white man. The same opportunities don't apply to people of color, women, and the LGBTQ community. If someone wants or needs a step up on the competition by going to a name brand school, more power to them and their parents. Just saying.

Everyone has hurdles to overcome. Even those who have inherited great wealth. The vast majority of them are unprepared for it and waste it, reverting to their previous state or worse by Year Three. The ones you take your hat off to are those who take what they are bequeathed and double/triple it through the same process that everyone else does - education, hard work and perseverance.

Meanwhile, what do you say to the tens of thousands of members of protected classes who have overcome their hurdles to achieve great things and become successful? Your post is an insult to them.

BTW, Harvard, Stanford, USC and schools like them understand that a lifelong relationship with their students is what breeds continued success in both. They groom their members from the day that they accept them for matriculation. By the time of graduation, the alums are prepared to give to their alma mater in great sums and to be proud of it. Think a church and tithing. Does Cal do this? All I ever got was a series of letters begging for money.

Tsk, tsk. Sounds like someone who got ahead on the backs of others much less fortunate than him. If he went to wazoo, no doubt he wore a cardigan in HS and drove around in his dad's hand me down McLaren.

I have an idea. Let's liquidate all his assets and spread the proceeds around as we see fit. I'm sure everyone at the pyramid's tip and base would agree that people like him are evil and must be dealt the harshest penalties. How else might we purify and transform?

I have an idea too...I don't know why I continue to expect more from a Cal board. Proves my initial point though, where you go to school doesn't guarantee anything.

Again, oh brother.

"Tsk, tsk. Sounds like someone who got ahead on the backs of others much less fortunate than him."

There is absolutely zero information in 82grads post that would indicate that his family member got ahead on the backs of others less fortunate than him.

This is acceptable these days? Is the new normal to assume that someone who succeeded in corporate america did so because they were white and/or came from a well off family?

This is crazy.

I'm willing to bet the vast majority of this board are straight white man, and for a college sports board, this probably is one of the most diverse. Just saying. For those that don't have an agenda, the article posted was the convictions of two fathers in the Varsity Blues saga, the first to be convicted in a trial. They is essence bribed their kids into the named schools by having their children characterized as athletes. IMO, there is a racial component to that as athletics is an avenue by which minorities can get into an elite college by being an actual elite athlete. The conduct of these parents to abuse that pathway could impair that pathway in the long run.
