Why did we play them in back to back years ('96 & '97) in Berkeley?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1997_California_Golden_Bears_football_team

1997 was @ Oregon St.

According to Winsipedia, the 1997 game was played in Berkeley.

According to Sports Reference, the 1997 game was played in Berkeley.

According to Oregon State's 1997 media guide, the 1997 game was scheduled to be played in Berkeley.

According to Oregon State's 1996 media guide, the 1996 game was scheduled to be played in Berkeley.

Oh, and this:

My bad for relying on Wikipedia. And on Google which linked wiki first.

In modern times, Cal played 2x @ OSU in 1984/85, 1998/99, and 2000/2001. And boated OSU 4 strait games at CMS between 1977 and 1981.

Isn't it odd that this was announced just days before? Like 2 days before? It's odd, isn't it?!?!

This reminds me of an NFL team coached by a Cal alum that announced just days before the game that they were retiring the jersey of a beloved player who died too young during a break-in. That announcement was met with scrutiny because it occurred days after the team was embroiled in a racism email scandal.

But I can't figure out what scandal Cal would have.....Why, why, why would they announce this at the last minute?

Never assume malice (or deviousness) when incompetence is a plausible explanation.

I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them.
I love this comment!! I'm pretty sure the gold old days are always like the green light at the end of the dock.
We are always in the "good ol' days". You just don't know it until time has passed and you look back wondering where that time went.

Wait, we are in the good ol' days now?!?

Unless Tedford agreed to this in the past couple of days, wouldn't this have leaked out? I mean it's kind of a big deal. And now Cal's social media is pumping the hell out of this.

Yep. Someday, another asteroid will hit the earth and those few who survive the immediate aftermath of the blast will look to their children and say, "Damn, those people in the early 21st C. had it made".

Too bad he will be honored in a near-empty stadium , including about 150 students who don't even know who he is.

When I was an undergrad at Cal, going through struggles and heartbreak, my dad told me "These are the best days of your life."
I thought, "This is it? This is the best it gets and it goes downhill from here? How depressing." Of course he was right, but I didn't need to hear it at the time.

If someone from the future came back and told you, at the start of the 2004 Holiday Bowl, "This is it, Cal football will never be at a higher point than this moment," would you thank them?

Are you fairly sure? Because I'm thinking they might say, "Cheer up, kids; things could be a lot worse: At least you don't have to deal with endless Cal Football and Basketball losses!"
