This is home run hire for USC. When was the last time a coach left a one blue blood for another?

Recruiting at SC is going to explode. OU under Riley was already doing very well recruiting California. He has 3 big time. 5* level Los Alamitos kids committed to OU, You will hear in the next 24 hours or so they're going to SC. Every Top 100 kid in the state will be looking at SC starting now.

Not only will USC lock up California, remember Riley has deep roots in Texas recruiting and will get a talent pipeline going from there as well. Of course, USC also had the ability to recruit nationally.

Riley is an offensive whiz and a QB whisperer who coached up two Heisman winners. He took the Sooners to 3 CFB playoffs in 5 years in Norman.

Expect USC to go on a big run.
I think the closest comparison is when USC pulled Kiffin away from Tennessee and they went on their hillbilly couch burning tirade.

Hoping for a better ROI this time around because it's sizeable.

Nah...Tennessee thinks it was good, but not at that moment. Oklahoma was a big-time school when Riley left.

As this article argues, it's pretty unprecedented.

I do wonder if NIL $ would have been better at Oklahoma/Big 12 than at USC under Pac12 and California rules.

Wow!

California's rules? I thought California was the state that pushed the whole NIL rights in the first place?

Hancock Park is one of like 50 neighborhoods in my NextDoor region. From a snooty rich person's perspective, the problem with Hancock Park is it's not really secluded. Your blocks away from average people and, um, homeless...So I'd probably recommend him live in a gated community like Fremont Place (near Hancock Park), which is where Muhammad Ali used to live when I visited him in the early 80s.

The traveling time looks long because I conducted this search during commute hours.

He probably isn't looking for a short commute (mostly for about half the year anyway). He is looking for a flashy place that his wife and kids will be happy in and where he can host the team, recruits, visiting family and friends and everyone will understand why he isn't living in Norman, Oklahoma or West Texas.

Being close to an airport is good too.

If it were me, it would be PV, someplace with an ocean view. As someone said, Harbor Freeway to USC, close enough to LAX and Long Beach Airport. Close to some good high school football teams for recruiting.

I would not live in Hancock Park.

For family friendly neighborhoods, I would also consider with Manhattan Beach in addition to PV. Closer to the beach and LAX than PV. Or Paradise Cove Bluff in Malibu.

But for old money and proximity to USC, a gated community in San Marino would be my choice.

I can envision him having a luxury apartment in maybe the Downtown area that he could crash at (so he doesn't have to Tedford it at the office).

And he can have his "country home" near the beach somewhere.

I read a rumor that USC is paying for his house.

Yeah, except he has kids. And it is SC. I think you have to go home at night to your family. Better to hire good people and delegate, get good sleep (in bed with your wife) and maintain your health.

There are at least 3 professional athletes that live within a couple blocks from my in laws place near the strand in Hermosa Beach, including one near and dear to our hearts who was unceremoniously dumped to the Detroit Lions not long after picking up his HB pad. This new coach can afford a double lot on the strand and do some fine entertaining there. It's also a community where he could walk around in relative anonymity. I guess PV is good if you want an out of the way place, but there's a lot less going on there.

Isn't Hancock Park where the LAPD literally drew the line when they decided Koreatown could burn during the LA riots of '92? Doesn't that mean it's "safe"?

I grew up in the San Gabriel Valley and have got to say I really loathe San Marino but for someone with the means, it's a quick jaunt on the 110 to get to south central so that would be a prime spot for Riley. It's too bad there weren't any rumors of SC giving him the Gamble House, that would be a great commute if he's not doing it during rush hour.

San Marino is too close to the Rose Bowl, where UCLA plays.

USC stronghold is Orange County, Newport Beach south. South Bay, especially PV makes the most sense.

He has young kids and a family. Daily commute from OC is brutal unless you do the Kobe helicopter thing (which didn't end well). But from a lifestyle point of view, it is probably a fit for his family.

I think he ends up in the south bay somewhere or perhaps Palos Verdes. With recruiting, being in LA and near LAX is a huge piece of it. He could also got to Westlake/Calabasas, but I think that drive is worse than OC.

No, but Riley and the coaches he is bringing with him started attending practice on Tuesday.

From the way the interim coach is answering questions, it seems to me like the news, and the presence, of the new coaches is going to be a big distraction all week.

Having grown up in LA, this is not something I would do if I ever moved back and were famous. But living in New York, going in and out of a large building onto a super busy street seems totally normal, no matter how famous.

Hancock Park is definitely a nice neighborhood. Just not my cup of tea. Driving from Downtown or Koreatown to Hancock Park is a bit strange. A bit like going from Spanish Harlem or Morningside to Upper East Side.

A few close friends live in San Marino - one of my friends bought basically an entire cul-de-sac so that he can have his kids live near him as he gets older - but a little too old money for me.

I have lived in Manhattan Beach and Malibu, and like Manhattan Beach for families with younger kids and Malibu for families with older kids or empty nesters. Of course, I grew up in South Gate and Long Beach and have a soft spot for those cities even if I would not live there again. Orange County, especially Newport Beach or Laguna Beach are wonderful as well, but too far from USC.

Hysteria about crime is generally not productive in my experience.

Agreed. Although I thought Chip Kelly was a homerun hire. Doubt it, but still hoping it is more a Kelly hire than a Saban hire.

This is why I'd recommend Riley live in a gated community.

While Chip Kelly can live anonymously in Los Angeles, Riley can't, even if he wanted to.
