Cal's season didn't live up to expectations, and another round of C-19/lack of institutional support fun. Sonny certainly is in a position to discuss the institutional support issues.

As I said on the other board, Wilcox is dealing with these issues here and now, that hopefully go away in time. But last time I looked this class was in 8th place and around 60th in the nation and sliding. Hopefully Wilcox does a good job swimming in the Portal and in future classes.

This class looks like typical "new coach" type class - the kind a newly hired coach pieces together at the last minute. The next 12 months will tell us once and for all whether Wilcox can succeed at Cal. If he hopes to make the program a serious player long-term, a bowl and recruiting class in the Top 25 nationally in 2022 is a must.

Who knows. He's making a huge mistake, which he'll figure out in hindsight. He's signing on with a head coach who totally ignores defense, with a first-time P5 DC who's only had a few years experience even at the G5 level. Since arriving at Cal Sonny has never fielded a defense that averaged under 400 yards per game, and has only managed to average giving up under 30 points per game once.

Since becoming a first-time head coach at Cal Wilcox has only fielded a defense that averaged giving up over 400 ypg once, in his first year in the post-Dykes renovation project. He has never fielded a defense that allowed an average of 30 ppg, even in that first year. Put another way, Sonny best defensive points allowed year is equal to Wilcox' worst. Particularly as a defensive player this is a not even a close comparison.

Points and yards per game aren't that great a metric. If Sonny coaches up tempo, pass first offense his defense is going to be on the field a lot. It may be good but his ppg and ypg numbers will look bad. The converse is certainly true if Wilcox coaches a run first, ball control offense. Maybe yards per play or points per play. Even then, a defense that is on the field longer will suffer. Bottom line, as always, is wins...and wins against good teams.

This is exactly my point. With Dykes, even if as a defensive player you and your unit are good his system will make you look bad. If you're bad or even average, it will make you look terrible. That's not a recipe for personal success and achieving your life goals.

They still make "tackles." Our last DE drafted was Looney. He had 51 tackles in 11 games in 2016 and 41 tackles in 12 games in 2017, despite playing in a much better defense in 2017.

More plays = more tackles to go around. Bend but don't break = more plays than a blitzing high risk defense. The best defense forces 3 and outs = few plays = few tackles.

Agree.

Oregon loses its HC to a former FBS contender looking to become a contender again. Oregon then goes all out for a quality HC. Contrary to derogatory comments
that are posted on this board, Oregon decides that Wilcox is to be its savior and values his skill set much higher than many of the posters on this board do.

Oregon can out bid Cal for Wilcox's services.
(I thought that Wilcox was gone. How likely is it that Cal can keep a HC if UO, USC or UW really wants that coach. Answer: 0% chance.)
Miracle of miracles: Wilcox stays and asks for more money……..,for his assistant coaches. Thus improving his ability to keep or hire the assistant coaches he wants.
This is a win for The assistant coaches. A win for the players. A win for Cal Football's reputation. A win for Wilcox since his reputation sky rockets. And a win for Cal. The only people who are not happy are those that wanted to fire Wilcox.

Well, despite beating furd and sc twice as so many pumpers like to point out he is not making any traction on the recruiting front against them. Wilcox would have to totally overhaul his recruiting operation to gain any traction and it's not clear he has the ability to sell his wares with any top prospects.

It's not pollyanna, it's smart. I'm glad this kid isn't coming since he obviously didn't want to be here. From the quotes he gave TOS it's clear his family disagrees but they aren't the ones who need to go out and perform on Saturdays. He'll find out soon enough what it's like to play in a Sonny Dykes defense. Best of luck to him, he's gonna need it.
