This is exactly what Wilcox needs. Could Cal finally be getting serious about football?

If this means that Wilcox has been given an increased budget for staff and coaches, it's all good.

He's the same guy Wilcox had before, he jumped from Cal to USC, his alma mater. Probably wasn't retained or he would have stayed. I'm not sure it really moves the needle, but he is young and sounds well regarded so welcome back!

Given the woeful results Cal has recently produced on the recruiting trail, it was evident that an infusion of leadership into the department was desperately needed. Wilcox is smart enough to realize that he needed help and did what he had to do…..

I'm assuming that Lincoln Riley had his own guy he wanted for the position... and we were able to capitalize on that.

Yup - consider me more worried about Wilcox. He keeps on coming back or sticking with his inner circle. Not a recipe for growth.

The reactions on Twitter show how meaningful this is to so many people. Great news.

Who was handling this last year? Did they get let go, or did they take a job elsewhere?

The new Championship CALiber initiative that was announced recently and spearheaded by some donors on this board plus others has provided the funds to expand recruiting staffing (among other things), so I wouldn't be surprised if Marshall represents an added position. A great get.

Zac Bocian was [is?] Director of Player Personnel 2019-2021. His last tweet/retweet was Dec. 17.

Here's hope his top priority is to get a top notch qb, one who is smart, accurate pocket passer who can run ( get out of trouble) when needed! We HAVE TO have this type if we're going to do better than 6-6.

When was this 'best class' signed by Wilcox and are any of that group playing now? A good QB is not going to make up for a poor O Line. Concentrate on Linemen.

Read this bio, and the "hire a Cal guy who gets it" crowd will lose their collective *****

Why? He is a Cal grad, yes, but he is not allowed to recruit, right?

I was curious yesterday what a Director of Player Personnel does. This reference goes back and forth between a collegiate DPP and pro level DPP (a distinction with probably diminishing distinctions in the years to come?). Some quotes regarding collegiate DPPs:
Quote:

The Director of Player Personnel is a frequently overlooked, but vitally important management position on both professional and college sports teams. Sports management has evolved so that the position has a dual role, as he is typically involved in both player recruitment and in ongoing player support. However, player recruitment is a DPP's primary role, especially at the college level.

Scouting Activities

Player evaluation, sometimes called scouting, is a central part of a director of player personnel's job. He must pull together all the information on a player, including input from team scouts and coaches, recruiting services and other sources, to present to the general manager and head coach.
Quote:

Recruitment is a core responsibility for college DPPs, and they are responsible for everything from carefully complying with all NCAA rules on recruitment to arranging recruitment visits for coaches or campus visits for potential recruits. According to ESPN, winning a championship heavily depends on the efforts of the team's DPP, sometimes called a general manager in college football.

Ongoing Player Support

Many DPPs also have duties relating to player support. On the college level, DPPs typically serve as liaison between departments, helping students deal with compliance, student services, strength and conditioning, travel plans, facilities, housing, parking and legal matters.
Quote:

Working with Coaches, Managing Staff

Coaches and DPPs have to work together to identify areas of team weakness and then scout recruits to fill the needs. Many DPPs have had coaching experience on some level. Some DPPs are employees working under the head coach, others report to the athletic director of the school or the general manager of the team. DPPs also have to manage a staff of scouts, database experts and compliance specialists, and administrative responsibilities can eat up a good bit of their time.

I'm with your sediments....

USC's director of recruiting strategy Marshall Cherrington is returning
to Cal
[oh brother...], where he was previously the Bears' director of
recruiting strategy and helped them sign their best class under Justin
Wilcox
[..."best class"???? ....This may be true, but so what? Cal
football hasn't done diddley under Wilcox despite such recruiting.
And as many of you are tired of hearing, I strongly believe Wilcox
will continue and is now assured to not to do diddley.]
, and will
now be Cal's director of player personnel. Big hire for Bears.
[I disagree.
He may be a good recruiter, but Wilcox will not make him better if
his defensive emphasis controls Marshall babes targets. I mean
its offense that basically wins games...Is it not?]
