I have been a fan of the Olympics for most of my life and was in almost a dream state to be able to attend the Olympic Games in LA in 1984 (saw Carl Lewis win the gold in the long jump and saw Pernell Whitaker win a bout in boxing). However, I have to draw the line at manufactured, corporate sports such as "Mono Bob". How can the announcers -- how can anybody -- even say that without laughing?
I saw the Mono Bob human interest stories drummed up by the network. You can care, but it is not "crapping on them" to say that I don't care about their story any more than I care about the story of the person down the street from me. Everybody's got a story. Many of them are compelling. "Mono Bob" doesn't enhance it, in my book.
Did you like that Ice Dancing? That French couple, wow!
Apparently my view is not a minority one, as these Games have all-time low ratings, but then most of us "really have no idea what we're talking about".
EDIT: Just saw your post on the other board about half pipe. Enjoyed that clip much more than mono bob and ice dancing!
Oh please.
Why not just admit (as I suggested earlier) that you arent a fan of the WINTER OLYMPICS.
Manufactured "corporate" sports like Mono Bob?
Says who?
Never mind that the 2 and 4-man Bobsled competition has been in the Winter Olympics since 1924.
And you're all bent out of shape because of a 1-man Bobsled event?
lol
Yes, I did enjoy the Ice Dancing competition.
And it's been an Olympic sport since 1976.
Just like I enjoyed watching the Women's Biathlon and the Skeleton.
You'd have to be a fool not to be able to enjoy and appreciate those performances.
I can tell that you arent a Winter Olympics fan because you're too caught up conflating TV ratings with the performances.
You're too busy trying to support your ridiculous claim with nonsense.
Since when do the performances have anything to do with TV ratings?
The Super Bowl probably had over 100 million viewers yesterday.
Too bad TV viewership has nothing to do with the fact that it was a fairly boring game until the last 2 minutes.
NBC knew that their viewership was going to be down close to 50% during the Games in China.
They cut their ad rates accordingly before the Olympics started.
Do you really believe that Mikaela Shiffern cares about TV ratings?
Shaun White? Chloe Kim? Eileen Gu? Nathan Chen?
Julia Marino? Jesse Diggins? Lyndsey Jacobellis?
Erin Jackson? Megan Nick? Elana Meyers?
You're clearly not a Winter Olympic's fan.
I get it.
Decades ago, I would have said that, yes, I was a fan of the Winter Olympics. I enjoyed the speed skating, the ski races, the women's figure skating and even the "up close and personal" human interest stories that the network (ABC, I guess) would do.
But less and less, over the years, to the point where now, thanks in part to your prodding, I guess I am ready to admit that, indeed,
I am not a fan of the WINTER OLYMPICS, although, of course, I reserve the right to enjoy a moment or two, an event or two, as I see fit.
To be clear, I readily concede that your position on this is the winning one and mine is the losing one. Why? Because the Winter Olympics are supposed to be enjoyable, and you are reaping some enjoyment from it, whereas I am not (save for the perverse pleasure of making a snarky negative comment or two).
It's sort of like when they used to say that the French liked Jerry Lewis and we would belittle them for it. Hey, they won that one! In fact, that's what Mono Bob reminds me of: Jerry Lewis.
To all those who are enjoying these Winter Olympics, I am happy for you! Winning!
