Our youngsters were able to thwart two consecutive Canadian power plays, including a 5 on 3 late in the game.

Not being either a skier or skater, I'm only casually interested in Winter Olympic sports. I used to like watching ski jumping, but now the skis go down tracks on the ramp - are they rollers or ice? It's sure not snow. I noticed the mono-bob and, while they have now included every conceivable way for a single body to go down an icy chute (skeleton, luge, sled) they still need to add the most universal: cafeteria food trays.

There is the age-old argument that the Olympics should exclude any sports that require judges. In other words, if you can't measure or time the result, it shouldn't be in the Olympics. That would eliminate subjectivity at the cost of knocking out a bunch of summer (gymnastics, diving, etc) and winter (figure skating, ice dancing, various x-events). Looking back, there have been some pretty odd-ball sports included in the Summer Olympics: Tug o' war until 1920 and polo occasionally up through 1936. There have also been campaigns to include chess as an Olympic sport. Yikes.

If you are a fan of classic Summer Olympic track and field events, the World T&F (now called World Athletics Championships) will be in Eugene July 15-24. In spite of PEDs and other controversy, there's something compelling about watching people compete at the most basic level; running, jumping, and throwing. While tickets aren't cheap, it will be less hassle than the Summer Games in LA. I plan to go.

Late breaking news: for the 2024 Summer Olympics, breakdancing will be on the program. I don't plan to go.

Tug O War sounds awesome. Bring it back!

I already have my tickets for the World Championships for the Final 3 days of competition.
Was last up in Eugene for the 2012 Trials with Allison Stokke's pole vault coach.
Sadly, half the competition was out after the first bar at 13-09 because the
officials wanted to speed up the competition so #1 Jenn Surh wouldnt
risk her quad muscle tightening up.

Even ran into Bruce Jenner in the lobby of the Valley River Inn late one night.
He spent 30 minutes with us telling us about when he was in Munich in '72 and his roommates were Steve Prefontaine and 400m silver medalist Wayne Collett. An amazing story teller and ever so humble. He didnt even talk about '76.

After the Rodney King riots in 1992, a surprising number of SoCal people learned to pick out Placer County on the map as they moved up here to Roseville/Rocklin/Granite Bay. As a Bay Area guy, I was surprised to feel like an outsider. They all drove nicer cars than I did (anything's nicer than a Dodge Caravan and 10-year-old Accord).

I'm an east BAY native & learned in the late '60's (when I was 14/15) that Monterey AND Sacramento are considered to be in the "Greater" Bay Area.

Decades ago, I would have said that, yes, I was a fan of the Winter Olympics. I enjoyed the speed skating, the ski races, the women's figure skating and even the "up close and personal" human interest stories that the network (ABC, I guess) would do.

But less and less, over the years, to the point where now, thanks in part to your prodding, I guess I am ready to admit that, indeed, I am not a fan of the WINTER OLYMPICS, although, of course, I reserve the right to enjoy a moment or two, an event or two, as I see fit.

To be clear, I readily concede that your position on this is the winning one and mine is the losing one. Why? Because the Winter Olympics are supposed to be enjoyable, and you are reaping some enjoyment from it, whereas I am not (save for the perverse pleasure of making a snarky negative comment or two).

What is mildly interesting is, if you take a place that is mid-way between Sacto and the Bay Area, say Vacaville, what do they consider themselves? They're pulled from both directions and it often comes down to where they work and where they have more friends and family!

When I lived in the Bay Area, I watched KTVU's Ten O'Clock News religiously. They rarely covered Monterey. Why? Because it's not in the Bay Area.

Monterey has its own TV stations/network affiliates because it's in an entirely different area.

I live about 11 miles from Sofi Stadium.

I was sick and exhausted all day and made it to halftime before I fell asleep.

At about 7 p.m., I was awoken to the sound of fireworks.

I said to myself, "wow, those Sofi Stadium fireworks are loud."

So my second thought was, "wow, I had no idea there were so many Bengals fans in my neck of the woods."



So, what can you say? Obviously, it couldn't have gone any worse for Goff. I didn't think the Rams were the best team all season because, well, they struggled against Goff and the Lions.

Anyway, I'm glad this season is over...I have increasingly less interested in college football and the NFL. I mean the games. The odd thing is I think I'm more interested these days in the behind-the-scenes stuff than the actual games themselves. I'm not giving up on football, obviously, but I'm so glad this season is over. And I hate that it ended a week later than usual. Hopefully, they don't add another week....but if they do, at least a lot of people will have President's Day off.

I heard yesterday before the game that if the Rams won, they were planning to set off fireworks at Dodger Stadium, the Coliseum and West Hills Mall. I don't live down there or know the geography that well, but it could have seemed like fireworks were going off all around you. Supposedly if the Bengals won, the Bengal fans after party was going to be in Hollywood.

Believe it or not, while growing up in the Diablo Valley in the 60's and 70's, our TV set got KCRA out of Sacramento. Gary Gerald was the sports reporter, who later had quite a career as a national motorsports reporter.

Gary has also been the voice of the Sacramento Kings since 1985.

What is mildly interesting is, if you take a place that is mid-way between Sacto and the Bay Area, say Vacaville, what do they consider themselves? They're pulled from both directions and it often comes down to where they work and where they have more friends and family!

Yeah, Vacaville is literally in it's own no man's land.
I just call it Solano County.

Vacaville is in a grey area for sure, but I think it's closer to being Bay Area than Sacramento. Do they get the SF-based TV stations there? I think they do.
