Why are all the recruits pictured in Joe Roth era uniforms?

My simple guess/opinion is that they are Cal's flyest uni's by far, and they pop in photos, and probably at some point in the recruiting process, the recruits and/or current players recommend going with them? Also way down on the consideration list, but possibly with the uncertainty of the UA contract, you always know what the Joe Roth uni will look like.

It should be our regular, every game uni. I've been going to games since 1963 and NONE better than those. If everyone understood/knew the reason Coach Mike White selected them perhaps then everyone would want them???????

Unis actually go back before Joe Roth to JC Cruz days but are worn to celebrate Joe Roth. They were worn for the better part of a decade (1970s). They are my favorites as well.

Sorry Baer but I totally disagree
The first Cal game I attended in person was In Fall of 1959.
IMO The Joe Roth Uni's are among the WORST of all Cal uniforms i have seen over the past 64 years.

Helmets were terrible and generic.

Blue made Cal look like San Jose State

The white stripe on the crown of the helmet and circling the C on helmets and the white stipe on the Jersey made Cal look like some clownish team on a 1970's made-for-TV movie.

Clearly "not-ready-for-prime-time.

Completely agree. Accept them for the meaning behind the uniform, but if it were not for Joe Roth, I would prefer not to see them again. Yale Blue and Gold. And yes, SJSU lite has always come to mind.

You need to recall the context of when the "Roth unifors" uniforms appeared. As a kid, I sat in the end-zone for ten years watching the grey bleakness of Cal football in the 1960s. Marv Levy punting on 3rd down. Ray Willsey's gritty outmanned defenses combined with a boring ineffective offense that didn't punt on 3rd down, but didn't go for it on 4th and 1. USC had Garrett and OJ. UCLA had Beban. Cal finally got Isaac Curtis - oh wait - they can't open any holes for him. Oh wait - now Cal's on NCAA probation for recruiting him aaaaaand . . . he's gone to SD State.

Eventually, Cal hired Mike White. I don't know if he made the uniform decision, but it signified the color explosion of the 1970s and that Cal football was going to change. It took a couple of years, but the change eventually came and I was a Cal student when it happened. Bartkowski, Muncie, Roth, Albrecht all wore those unis. And you're just plain wrong about how those unis looked on TV - they looked great! The only valid complaint is that now Pitt uses the same colors as their regular uniform.

Hey, I'm fine with the current uniforms (although I still have a fear that Wilcox is the second coming of Ray Willsey) but once a year I love seeing those 1970's unis. In fact, while the stadium logistics make it almost impossible, I'd love to see the team enter the field for the Roth game by walking down the steps through the student section. Maybe that would get the students to show up before kick-off, for a change.

In reality SJSU's blue is actually Cal's OFFICIAL color: Yale Blue. So you would be more accurate saying SJSU copies Cal, instead of vice versa .And coach White's reasoning for the "C" on the helmet was he wanted to bring a winning mindset to the team. - after SOOOOO many years of losing. In so doing, he wanted the uni, helmet included, to emulate the Green Bay Packers because of how dominant they were in the 1960's under Vince Lombardi. From a psychological standpoint it worked. They became good - really good and they played with great confidence in winning! And their offense was fun as bleep to watch!! So happy I was in school then!!

Well, I have to admit that the Mike White years, the Snyder years and the first five Tedford years are the only real peaks since Pappy's time. I like what JW is doing and his total personna, but he really needs to get someone who does a total appoach to our offense on the plain with what he and his Co-Ordinators have done on defense. At the point we will be ready at a higher plain. My perception, my confidence is not at the same level for the O as with the D even this year. Going back 60+ years the feel is "high hopes" again. And believe me I would love to be wrong. Time to stop taking about hope and talking about confidence when it comes to the O.

I like the Roth Unis, but always disliked the white "C". Generally speaking I don't like white anywhere on a Cal uniform, but because they used a good gold, the white on the sleeve sandwiched between the two gold stripes actually looks good. It would NOT have looked good if they had used the pukey yellow Cal unis used for way too many years. But the white "C" needed to be in gold.

Having said I like them, I only want to see the Roth unis when we play the smog city schools.

Overall, I do like the UA uniforms. The gold is solid, the blue is strong, and the look is clean, although I prefer the original helmets. The original Cal helmets popped. The current ones don't and look worn, to me.
