It's been awhile since I've been this excited about a speedy running back since Jahvid joined Cal in 2007. I can't say Jadyn is as fast as Jahvid, but he definitely has the patience and the ability to hit the holes. Definitely looking forward to watching him carry the rock the rest of the year! GO BEARS!

Ott is more powerful and can break tackles.
Best was faster. Ott is also fast, just not as fast as Best.

Go Bears!

The thing about Best that I have not seen by too many other backs is that he changed direction at speed. No slow down.

I agree, I'm just really impressed with Ott's patience on waiting for the hole to open up, did you see that linebacker lay out like Superman and catch nothing but air!

I don't recall Jahvid having Ott's patience.

But man was Jahvid special!

Jahvid Best was the most electrifying player in Cal football history

Watch this video, and take note of the play below vs Minnesota

Ott has the potential so let's see (and enjoy)

Hopefully Jahvid can meet and talk to Ott sometime soon

Thanks for that. I was at the Minnesota game. Good memories when the thought was that we were the front runners in the Pac.

My brother and I were at that game when JB scored 5 TD's, electrifying!

Vereen had this type of patience and some power. Ott reminds me more of Shave V.

11.3 is the fastest recorded 100m track time we know about for Ott, but I'm pretty sure, if he was seriously running track in the past year or so, his best time would be better. 10.7? I mean look at the guy run!

But Jahvid was insanely fast, especially for a running back. Most super-fast football players play WR or CB.

No one In college football was a fast at Best in his day. He came close to making the 100 meters finals in the 2016 Olympics (won by some guy named Bolt). Jadyn is nevertheless a very skilled running back for a frosh. I lie the comparison to Vareen better.

Some RBs are considered the Best but others Ott to be in the conversation.

Seriously though: Once Ott showed he could run close to 300 yards in a game, he and Best will be forever linked.

I agree that Best could change direction at full speed. But Ott can change speeds in any direction.
Best had great hips. Ott has great feet.
Best set the record the last conference game of his second year.
Ott threatened the record in his first conference game of his first year...on just 19 carries.

I don't know how many carries Best had.

Best broke off long runs.
Ott breaks through for TD runs.

Both run relatively upright.
So far I think Ott takes care of the ball a bit better.
I think Best fumbled a bit but not a lot.
So far Ott hasn't fumbled but it's early. However, recently the Cal offense has almost eliminated fumbles.

One difference that I at least perceive there to be is this:

I recall Best always getting hit super hard. There was his concussion of course but even on his first carry against Tennessee he got stuck pretty hard. Then there was also the Maryland puking event. There were countless other big hits he took as well. I attributed this to his speed of course but also maybe just that he never learned how to protect himself or fall correctly.

Ott on the other hand is a tad slower and seems to know how to protect himself so his longevity might be much better.

Does anyone else observe this or have just been smoking the good stuff too long?

Otts strength isn't his speed, it's his vision. I distinctly recalled a play where a LB came on a blitz and was going to hit Ott just as he got the hand-off. He saw it, did a lil side step and was off to the races. I'd say he's pretty similar to Vereen, both used their vision to squirt thru places, vareen probably had a bit more strength but was much older.

Not really a matter of speed, he has power and strength that Jahvid did not, seeing Ott stay upright while being gang-tackled and still pushing a whole pile of dudes is a whole different dimension.

I'm not sure how much wisdom Ott could impart on Best, but if it resurrects his career, I suppose it's worth a try.

I guess the biggest question is, Will Musgrave F this great weapon we have or wil we continue throw 1st and run 2nd. I was always taught establish the run to set up the pass. I would to see more end arounds and misdirection to keep the defense second guessing. ****, Wilcox can just hire me and cut out Musgrave....

Jahvid sometimes ran straight in to his downfield blockers because he was moving at 1.25X the speed of the college game.

Yeah, he's exciting but it is early in his career to compare him to Best (or Lynch or Muncie) on the basis of one huge game. When I was in school Jerry Drew set a single game rushing record that stood for decades but, on the whole, was a pretty ordinary journeyman RB. I look forward to more game changing production from Ott but I'll wait a bit to start ranking him with our greatest.

We're in same boat re; ranking Ott w/Cal's best ever running backs. Is way too early. No denying he has all the tools to be a great one but he needs to be the difference maker in a lot more games before I put him up there w/Muncie, Lynch & Best. I'm thinking I need to see him play a full season before I even determine his place in ALL the running backs I've seen play for the Bears since 1963! And what he did vs. Arizona last Saturday was NOT against a very good defense - not even in top 1/2 of today's pac12. I want to see Jayden make big-time yards when playing against good teams whose defensive game plan is keying on stopping him - just as Cal's previous greats did so!

Ott's vision, which is more that of a seasoned RB than of a true freshman, serves him very well with our OL, which isn't a team strength. He's probably more effective running behind them than Best would, the same way a QB with great pocket presence would be more effective working with very average protection than a stellar pure passer who doesn't have the best pocket presence.

In the Best highlight video, I think my favorite is his run that starts at about the 1:10 mark, where he utilizes a downfield blocker perfectly to make it into the end zone.

The most important thing now is to keep Ott for next year.

PLEASE contribute to NIL California Legands (CALegands.Com) that Sebastabear has set up if you want to see Ott and other stars wearing Blue and Gold next year.

Go Bears!

No thanks. I'll stick with a veteran coach, but I am sure my granddaughter's flag football team might need a special teams coach??
