Sources tell me an aging Cal mic man alum, after being honored on the field at the Washington game & being denied by Cal Yell Leaders the chance to lead a chant, barged into the Cal AD office this week and threw a ****fest.

Sorry for all involved. It's tradition at Cal.

I remember the story of a 50+ year old Ken
Montgomery wanting to lead one quarter of
chants and was denied a few years ago.
He then sent weeks of emails and calls
*****ing & moaning to Cal Athletics and
Spirit, making the lives of dozens of
students & staffers miserable.
spooky ben @mpete91 4d
Anyways, Ken Montgomery got boo'ed
and the Mic Men wouldn't let him lead a
cheer. Results on the field be damned,
thats a win.

I feel sorry for wilcox and knowlton that they have to deal with this self-entitled a-hole.

What does Ken's twitter have anything to do with this? Beyond that, being anti-mask in April 2022 makes you a "goon"?

I remember 20+ year-old Ken Montgomery leading cheers and it's what brought me out to games for years and years and made me a big Cal fan. Passion is what he had and still has today. I've been to nearly 35 away games and have seen him leading cheers at many of them too. None of those trips would have happened without Ken building the passion in me. I share his frustration, assuming this is true, with the way the ADept runs things. Hey Cal, your cheers suck, your coaches suck, your teams suck, your passion sucks. Just look around. I'm sure he looks around and it's similar to what was in the stands when he got there and he figures he can turn it around like he did way back when. Maybe you should give him the mic back cause what you are doing ain't working. I personally hope Ken Montgomery never loses his Cal passion.

As a former old Cal yell leader who led a long "call and response" yell I devised for ten years on the Cal platform, which lasts over a minute, I would be interest in hearing the words to Ken's yell and any explanation of it.so it makes sense (though that is difficult without witnessing the yell). Maybe have Ken write out the yell with added explanations to it so it makes sense without actually viewing it. But I know that would be difficult.

In my opinion, Cal's best yell leader was Bob Tuck. He had total balls and was very creative. His stealing the football while wearing a full gorilla outfit at USC, i believe in 1971 or 1972, and then climbing the goal post at the west end and doing his gorilla immitation was classic Tuck. He was later arrested but got away.

Perhaps there should be a program where old yell leaders can do their thing at Cal games. I doubt the new yell leaders are as good as the old ones. They don't have the balls to do something creative.

It has nothing to do with balls. Your generation is now the admin and the police and would probably expel a student who did something like that. They certainly wouldn't escape the police as Tuck did.

He's been posting anti-mask stuff and downplaying COVID since at least summer 2020 and I also see some tweets questioning media coverage of the last election and overall support of people in the DeSantis/Trump realm.

I don't doubt his passion for Cal and I'm happy that Cal athletes will benefit from his donation. But I don't find it surprising that his politics and opinions outside of Cal athletics will cause people to not want to celebrate him overall as a person or give him additional visibility and adulation.

And regarding the Mic Men, I'm the first to say that the new class of Mic Men needs some guidance for sure. 2 out of 3 of them need serious work and the students at large seem to have suffered from a huge spirit/tradition disconnect after the pandemic. But nothing says it's gotta be this one alumni to be the one to help re-build some of that tradition.

I'm sure Bob Tuck knew he could face being arrested and held by the L.A coliseum police. And I'm sure he did it for the challenge of seeing how it would work out. BTW, for years after he graduated he would climb the flag pole on the east side of the stadium, just south of the student section, and lead the Cal spellout using one arm and one leg to do so, holding onto to the poll with the other arm and leg. Had to see it to believe it. He always got a great response. Would like to see if Ken could do that.

Bob was a very creative and ballsy guy. Here's a link to a Cal alumni video he created, which shows his gorilla outfit he used, or something very close to the one he used in the L.A coliseum while stealing the football being used by Cal and USC in the fourth quarter of the game (most likely in 1971)

Not suggesting anyone do what Bob did at the Cal -- USC game in L.A. Nothing he did at home Cal football games was illegal or close to it.

I was just demonstrating what a creative guy he was and still probably is. If he lead yells for a half at a Cal game the current yell leaders could learn a lot from the benefits of being creative and a true leader. He was a student leader at Cal Camp for years at Camp Blue. Played The Rooster at nightly counselor talent shows there.

My wife and I were in the coliseum that day. My memory tells me they actually played for a while with the gorilla on the goal post. Anyone know for sure about my "played on" comment?
Gobears49
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Nobody interfered with Bob on the goal posts. In his full gorilla outfit, and carrying the football he stole at midfield in the fourth quarter when both teams were on the field (was surprised none of them tackled Bob), he ran to the west end, climbed up the goal posts, walked across to the middle of the crossbar and bent his body up and down with the football, like a gorilla might do..

Then he fell off of the crossbar, but was unhurt. Then ran into the stands behind him where a policeman or two caught up with him, but then he escaped from them, and i think he got away for good.

Bob had true balls and were fearless. He has to be the best yell leader Cal has ever had because he was so creative and fearless. BTW, he was the guy who ran around the Cal basketball floor like a wild man for a few years. He didn't lead any yells then.

His best creative yell at a football game was when Cal played Stanford in football at Cal when they had Jim Plunkett at QB and WR Randy Vataha. Plunkett threw a perfect deep ball to Vataha when Vataha was ten or more yards behind the closest Cal defender, sure touchdown if Vataha had caught it, but he dropped the ball. Had he caugtht it, and he should have, it was s sure touchdown.

On the spur of the moment, something that is rarely done as a yell leader at football games, Bob came up with this yell and led it -- "Randy Vataha ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha," etc. So it was a spur of the moment yell that d laughed at Vataha. My brother, who went to Stanford then, and was sitting on the Stanford side, said, it was enunciated perfectly. But I guess you had to be there to see and hear it to appreciate it.

BTW, if anyone wants me to type out my more than a minute long "call and response" (or soul) yell, which originated with a black yell leader I once saw at a high school game (couldn't hear his lyrics well at all so I had to create my own using Cal lyrics). I did it a few times when I was with Tuck and then off and on for ten years or so on the Cal yell platform. Takes about a minute to do. Was going to do it right before The Play in 1982, but couldn't because Cal was then behind after Stanford scored their last touchdown and one of the lyrics of the yell was "six, five, four, whose ahead in the score" (student response between my lines -- "Cal Bears" I couldn't since Cal was not ahead then so that line was not correct so I felt i couldn't lead it.

I also came up with a great yell for Cal basketball because i felt Cal need a yell like Stanford playing "All Right Now" with the famous Stanford "jump." Calls straw hat band was playing the song "The Middle" by Jimmie Eat World. I felt I could add some lyrics to it, got the Cal yell leaders to agree to help me with it, but they did a lousy job of holding up the signs at the precisely right time. There ia a video of the Cal band playing the song in Haas Pavilion, which I could post. You are hear most of the lyrics in the video even though the yell had only been taught once. The lyrics were in the refrain -- "C A L" (with hose letters being yelled slowly) and then "Cal alright, alright." The video of the Straw Hat band playing the video is on YouTube with the faint yell so if anyone is interested I can post it with instructions as to when to (faintly) hear the yell. I have tried to get the Cal band to learn and play the song again so the yell can be used, but so far they have refused.

Go Bears!!!!

That's funny. I heard the student section was the only loud section at the UW game in comparison to the rest of memorial which looked empty on TV.

Every year old alums complain about student sections without looking around at other sections of Memorial and seeing how empty and dead everywhere else is. Is the student section perfect? No. But that's on the new generation of students to figure out on their own and not some old guy who had his glory days long before the new students were even born. If Ken wants to relive his glory days as a Mic Man, maybe he can convince the AD and alums to allow him to lead chants for non-student section fans. However i guarantee you it won't be as "lit" as during his glory days.

Want the student section to be louder? Maybe dont give an extension to an average at best coach with a boring style of play. Let's fix that first.

Can I ask a serious question to all you alums? Is society now more strict/harsh wish punishments for fooling around? I hear all these stories, even hear stories from my dad, his friends, etc. about things they used to do when they were younger-- all harmless fun of course but I can't help but feeling like if I were to do those things there'd be serious consequences; suspension/expulsion, arrest, etc

It probably depends on the particulars, more than the time period. I know when I got arrested for a relatively harmless college prank (Everybody should try something like this!), the cops took me down hard and then threw the book at me. 40+ years ago.

That said, I feel like there are a lot more rules and regulations enforced than there used to be.

To answer that question I think I would have to hear some examples of what you now get in trouble for.

I do know that things we were allowed to do at Cal when I went there, in the last 1960's, you can't do now, like:

1) Stealing the goal posts from Stanford and putting them high up on the balconies of Cal dorms.

2) Bonfire rallies (really too bad those were banned at both Cal and Stanford)

3) Tearing down goal posts (think the last that was done at Cal was in 2001 or 2002 vs. Stanford.

4) Sneaking into Memorial to practice shooting water balloons off with a doggy dish pulled back with two elastic bands.

5) A big game parade.

But most of what is described above is really not illegal or just banned but just died out.

I don't want this to turn into an alum v student thing, but cmon. Congrats, the students were the loudest section at the UW game. Do you want a cookie?

The student section has always been the loudest section in the stadium for the last 100 or so years. That's your job! That was my job when I was a student. You act like we weren't all students at one time. It's the students job to be loud and it's our (the alums) job to pay the godamn bills. Do you know how lucky you are to be sitting on the 50 yard line paying student prices?

As far as Ken goes, i know it's hard for you students to understand this because you've only seen crappy mic men, but good mic men were almost as valuable to winning games as players

And of all the mic men I've seen in my 40 years of going to games, Ken has the highest WAR of all of them. I can think of at least two games in which he was a gigantic factor in us winning. I know this is hard to believe, but when Ken was micman, we had the best student section in the country. Period. It's not even up for debate. But because you didn't see it, it's hard for you to understand how much an influence good mic men had on the game.

So you have to understand the alums point of view on all of this. We are seeing our traditions crumbling before our eyes. Our traditions, our cheers, our band, used to be a huge sense of pride for all of us. Even during our darkest seasons, we had these things to look forward to and take pride in. But now we're afraid that our traditions which have lasted for decades are going to disappear.

If standards were being met, if our traditions were being continued or even if new traditions were being made, I wouldn't care as much if the younger generation of mic men said "thanks but no thanks" to Ken.

But, I'm sorry to be so harsh, but the mic men from the last 5-10 years or so have been failing. There is no justifiable reason to shut Ken out. I promise you, if Ken had been allowed to mentor the younger kids, the mic men would be better than they are today. There is zero doubt in my mind. So from my perspective, the younger mic men are being plain selfish. They could improve. They could have a greater impact on games and help us win more. But because of, I don't know, stubbornness, all of that institutional knowledge that Ken has is going to be lost forever. So Congrats!! You guys will be known as the generation that lost our traditions forever. Thanks

Thanks
Yell leaders are a thing of the past.

Fans will make noise if the team is good and exciting. They will be on their phones if the team is not those things.
