Eight days from today the greatest athletic event in the world kicks off.

This year the World Cup is held in the tiny oil-rich country of Qatar. The previous World Cups have been held in large/huge countries such as Brazil in 2014 and Russia in 2018. Since you may have never heard of Qatar before, it is located in the southern part of the Persian Gulf and is only around 50 miles wide and 120 miles long (please feel free to Google how the 2022 World Cup ended up being awarded to Qatar).

In the 2022 World Cup, USA is drawn to be in Group B which is the toughest of the eight groups in the World Cup. Group B consists of USA (ranked #16 in the world), England (#5 in the world), Iran (#20 in the world) and Wales (#19 in the world). Only two out of the four teams advance to the knock-out stage.

The reason Group B is tough is that it's four teams have an average FIFA World Ranking of 15 as compared to, for example, Group A teams (which includes Qatar) which have an average ranking of 30. All the other Groups have at least one team ranked outside top 30 (even outside top 40), but, all the teams in the US's Group B are ranked in the top 20.

US has a good but very young team (which can be good or bad). Likely US needs a win against a good and well-coached Iran in it's last game on November 29 to advance (yes, there will be lots of politics in the air). The last time these two teams played in competition was in the 1998 World Cup when Iran won 2-1 (there was a friendly game later in Pasadena which ended in a 1-1 tie). This year politics again will be in the air big time.

I will be going to the World Cup despite the fact it is in Qatar because I have gone to the last four World Cups (two men and two women). Yes, I am a sports junky (and my beloved Golden Bears are not doing so well in FB, MBB and WBB this year, so, no reason to stay around).

Is anyone else going to the World Cup? Would anyone like an occasional first hand report from the World Cup?

I won't be going, but I'd love to read some reports from Qatar. Mainly how the atmosphere is, interactions with other fans, how is the heat, etc.

"world cup schedule" in google works. Games are at 2, 5, 8, and 11am pacific. First USA game against Wales on 11/21 at 11am.

I am going ... in 2026 in the States.

The US team has the most talent they have ever had, but they are young and poorly coached. Their coach is a good culture guy, but they will be less organized and less strategic than their competition. On the bright side all the attackers are healthy, which was never true for qualifying. However, two of the three top center backs are injured, so the defense may be vulnerable.

The team could win their group or lose all three games. Anything is possible.

Gonna watch the US Nats as well as Korea, which suffered a huge blow when Son Heung Min had to have surgery (sounds like he still could play but who knows at what level). Korea might be in the Group of Death with Uruguay, Ghana and Portugal.

Of course, in the World Cup every group is tough and anything can happen. However, South Korea's Group H is the second easiest of the eight groups in the World Cup and certainly is not the "Group of Death".

According to the FIFA World Rankings here are the rankings of teams in Group H: Portugal #9, Uruguay #14, South Korea #28, Ghana #61 (the lowest ranked team that has qualified for this year's World Cup). Therefore Group H teams have an average ranking of 28, lowest average rankings of teams in every group except Group A.

Please note that two teams in the Group H (South Korea and Ghana) have lower rankings than any team in Group B.

Here are the the list of the World Cup groups from the toughest to easiest based on the average FIFA World Rankings of teams in that group:

Toughest to Easiest Groups:
1. Group B (#15), England, Iran, USA & Wales
2. Group E (#18), Spain, Costa Rica, Germany & Japan
3. Group F (#19), Belgium, Canada, Morocco & Croatia
4. Group D (#19), France, Australia, Denmark & Tunisia
5. Group G (#20), Brazil, Serbia, Swiss & Cameron
6. Group C (#23), Argentina, S Arabia, Mexico & Poland
7. Group H (#28), Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay & S Korea
8. Group A (#30), Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal, Netherland

omg, one of my favorite posters is a member of the Tartan Army.

I lived in Scotland during the 1978 Argentina travail and witnessed the agony first hand.

I can't wait and will be rooting heavily for USA. Steeling myself for agony or ecstasy, either is a distinct possibility. I am concerned that our coach forces players into his favorite style rather than choosing a style that fits the players. Last few matches were underwhelming. We have a good group coming up, though! They are young. The future looks bright.

The FIFA rankings are a complete joke, so if you were ignoring them, you were doing the right thing. The US is in a weak group, fortunately. I think Group E and Group G are the toughest. Brazil has the best players, but a weird team dynamic. France is the other most talented team, but they have some injuries.

I was going to ignore the assertion in your OP that Group B is the toughest, because that's crazy. But then you had to come at my boy KAB like this (I'm kidding). You said you're a sports junkie but I am not sure if you're a soccer junkie. I'm not a soccer junkie but I follow it fairly closely. What I do know is most soccer junkies think the FIFA Rankings are a joke and no serious soccer fans uses them. Here's an article from 2018 explaining why and how ELO's ratings are much better than FIFA Rankings:

https://www.soctakes.com/2018/06/19/international-rankings-fifa-elo/

This year, ELO ranks the groups as follows, as recently summarized by FiveThirtyEight:

In fact, ELO has Group G as the sixth strongest group ever.

Respectfully, the FIFA Rankings are far more "scientific" than say the College Football rankings which is essentially a beauty contest based on certain individuals' personal perception.

The FIFA Rankings are based on mathematical formulas accounting for the results of matches each team has played and the strength of the opponent. The "competition" matches (e.g. World Cup qualifying or Gold Cup matches) are weighed much heavier than the "friendly" matches. Each team receives points based on the results of recent matches. The total points are tabulated and then the teams are ranked accordingly. For example, in USA's Group B, currently, #5 England has 1759.78 points, #16 USA has 1627.48, #18 Wales has 1569.82 points and #20 Iran has 1564.61 (yes, they calculate to the second decimal-crazy). The FIFA ranking system is somewhat similar to the College Basketball's BPI or RPI ratings (mathematical formulas based on the results, not how a select group of individuals feel about teams).

Of course, no rankings or ratings are perfect and the wins or losses need to decided on the field (That is why they play the games!). Even then, luck, bounce of the ball and referee's calls play major roles (specially in the low scoring game of Soccer).

I'd be the first to acknowledge that FIFA is corrupt (Exhibit A: Qatar being awarded hosting this year's World Cup). But, FIFA's Ranking system is based on a pre-agreed upon mathematical formulas which (hopefully) are less susceptible to corruption.

All ranking systems outside of college football are based on objective criteria. They can be compared by seeing how well they did at predicting which teams wins games. I assume by that metric ELO is better. But I don't really care. I watch a lot of soccer and I know what I know. The US is somewhere around the 25th best team in the world. I have not seen Wales or Iran play recently, but they do not have the quality of players the US has based on the values on https://www.transfermarkt.us/. But I am sure they have better coaching. It should be fun.

Thank you prospeCt! I've been to Easter Road, but this song came in after my time. Go Hibs!

Another inspiring anthem from the other green team:

I have attended all sorts of sporting events in four different continents. I have never seen fans as crazy enthusiastic as those in the south end of the Frankfurt Eintracht Stadium (currently in the fourth place in the German Bundesliga). Those Eintracht fans set off all sorts of fireworks and fire crackers starting from long before the game starts all the way through the game while singing and taunting the opponents the whole time(I don't know how they get away with it). I wish someone could find a video for this.

Go Bears!
Go USA!

I went to a Boca Juniors game in Argentina. It was absolute chaos. Fireworks, yes. Kids climbing a 20 foot tall chain link fence and straddling it, with a fall to the other side being down probably 100 feet to the section below? Yes. An actual riot aimed at the cops? Yes.

They were ripping up the asphalt and throwing it at the cops. We had to retreat into the stadium, and the officers dropped the security door, to avoid being caught in the cross fire. I saw cops bleeding from the head.

I asked the local we were with if there are riots at every game and he said, "Usually, but this was a mild one." MILD. He said I should see it when they play River Plate, their rival.
