UCLA Big Ten Conference Membership Legal Issues
Regents' Open Session on UCLA to Big 10
Will anyone be watching?
the student strikers came in and were chanting/protesting, that's why there's a delaysocaltownie said:
At what point is this like the Jury still being out? I figure if this was a "nothing we can do" they would be back by now :-)
The UC Regents are in closed session. A scenario they are considering is allowing UCLA to leave for the Big Ten, but putting into writing financial guarantees that would address mental health, academic, travel burdens. Also under consideration but less certain - a "Berkeley tax."

UC regents give UCLA the A-OK to join Big Ten provided Bruins take mitigation measures involving travel and other athlete well-being issues.

The UC Regents chair and UCOP president are recommending letting UCLA move to the Big Ten and revisiting the issue once the Pac-12 has a media deal, with possible 2-5 million subsidy for Calhttps://t.co/I2pdtEObjM pic.twitter.com/WrvdE49ZeQ

This seems like, at most, a little slap on the wrist.eastcoastcal said:
Summary for those who don't want to read/watch: essentially UCLA's move is endorsed & approved by the regents on the condition that they provide adequate nutritional/mental health/etc support for athletes, plus after the Pac media deal is signed, UCLA will give a one-time check to Berkeley for somewhere between $2-$10 million dollars
The only caveat to that is that the Regents reserved the right to increase the tax amount again if they want.eastcoastcal said:

The Board officially approves UCLA's move to the Big Ten (with accompanying conditions) by a vote of 11-5.

yeah it's nothing. the single-year increase that UCLA will experience with the B1G deal will more than cover thatPaulCali said:This seems like, at most, a little slap on the wrist.eastcoastcal said:

LMAO! Boy, the Regents really put the screws to UCLA!eastcoastcal said:

One of the Regents did mention that he (they?) favor continuing to allow athletics decisions to be made on a campus by campus basis. So the "let Ucla go but block Cal later" narrative doesn't seem to have teeth.PaulCali said:This seems like, at most, a little slap on the wrist.eastcoastcal said:

Yes though I believe the reservation of rights clause was not to dictate a change in range and moreso to retain the board having the final say on the number after Drake's recommendationWalterSobchak said:The only caveat to that is that the Regents reserved the right to increase the tax amount again if they want.eastcoastcal said:

yeah truth be told I was pretty unimpressed with the regents. some of the comments in the discussion portion were meandering, substanceless comments where the speaker is talking just to hear their own voice without saying anything meaningful. IDK just would've thought that if you're a regent of the state of California there'd be some requirement to not be a numbskullGolden One said:
What an absolute joke the final action taken by the Regents is. The "compensation" to Cal is only $2 to 10 million. The UC President will make a final recommendation to the Regents on a number within that range at a subsequent meeting, and then the Regents will vote on that recommendation.
In addition, the Regents approved ten "mitigation" measures to lessen the burden placed on the UCLA athletes as a result of the move to the Big 10. Among the mitigation measures is guaranteed breakfast and lunches for all student athletes on campus as well as mental health support and increased academic support.
I was not at all impressed with the intelligence of the Regents based on this meeting. They seemed to be a bunch of numb nuts. Newsom and the Lt. Gov. were not in attendance.
UCLA took Cal's place as the flagship when they announced this program: https://newsroom.ucla.edu/releases/ucla-launches-hip-hop-initiativeEcon141 said:
Welp we will cease to be to the flagship university in a few years. All the publicity of being in a relevant football program will give them the slight edge.
Thanks once again Knowlton and Christ for all that you do for our revenue sports.

Found it interesting that he opened his remarks with a statement about nuclear fusion research at the Lawrence Berkeley Lab. What was that about? Was he trying to trivialize the UCLA matter--by juxtaposition--before announcing a decision about it?

2. UCLA will adopt and implement annual plans to mitigate the travel impacts of its membership in the Big Ten Conference; such plans will take into account the competition schedule for each athletic team and shall be designed to reduce the burden of travel on student-athletes to levels comparable to the burden they would have experienced had UCLA continued its membership in the Pac-12 Conference; these mitigation strategies...will be reviewed for compliance with this provision by the Office of the President;
Repeat after me. THERE IS NO DE JURE FLAGSHIP. THat was decided 60+ years ago with the Master Plan for Higher Education.GoCal80 said:UCLA took Cal's place as the flagship when they announced this program: https://newsroom.ucla.edu/releases/ucla-launches-hip-hop-initiativeEcon141 said:

Agreed. Thought that may be a figleaf forgotten some years from now.WalterSobchak said:
This is the most interesting condition IMHO. There's no way they can legitimately do this without a West Coast Pod.Quote:

This is a big deal. It was done at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.PaulCali said:
