Come on, that's swim meet tweet has already been linked, and it's almost certainly not a done deal until the media contact is announced. It would not be in the best interest of any school in the p12 to vote for expansion without a rock solid TV contract in hand with numbers that work.

But, sure, it's likely, unless the TV contract is so jacked that everyone with value leaves the p12.

Cal Strong no see the value SDSU adds.

They no grant any other Pac-12 school strong entries in the SoCal recruiting territories. They no replacement for UCLA and U$C in that regard.

A HS player from Crenshaw High, Newport Harbor, or Mater Dei isn't going to be more attracted to Cal or WSU or Colorado because they will get to play in Aztec Stadium in eastern San Diego every other year.

Mater Dei, if the player is from OC, maybe.

I think Kliavkoff should look at PAC-10 teams each playing one neutral site night game at either Sofi or Anaheim Stadium each year (or every other year). Make it a bowl like event so fans can plan to travel. All of the teams have lots of alumni in SoCal, but Cal more than anyone.

If Anaheim it could be part of a package deal with Disney/ABC/ESPN.

Could be conference games or OOC games as part of a series with the ACC or even the SEC (as part of a Disney/ESPN deal). The PAC-11 could then reap part of the huge value created by having East Coast teams, maybe even SEC teams, play in SoCal in the late night TV time slot. I bring up the SEC but I kind of hate that idea of giving them exposure on the West Coast even if that would generate the most money. Conference games or OOC games against the ACC would probably be best.

Our record against SDSU is pretty dismal. I can reminder a couple of losses down there when Gilby was coach and they had Marshal Faulk as a running back. We also lost under Sonny with Davis as qb not that long ago.

Cal football has won every game vs. SDSU in Berkeley, and SDSU has won every game vs. Cal in San Diego.

I was at the only football game our Bears have won in San Diego: The 2006 Holiday Bowl win over Texas A&M.

Agree.

I think adding SDSU would be an admission that the Pac is dead.

Here are two Crenshaw HS players who chose to play at SD St. before it was admitted to the Pac 10/12:

Hmmmm, Boston Market? Friend of a friend heard at a banquet? Pretty thin. However, I hope it is true since I live in North County and never get to see the Bears! The Aztecs have a strong athletic program and are on the upward trajectory. The new campus with new stadium fits well with Viejas Arena. Better bet than SMU.

I was just in San Diego hit two weeks and I'm warming up to the idea for sure. With the Chargers in LA, the Aztecs moving up to the PAC-12 could make them the region's team. Of course, Cal has a similar opportunity on the East Bay.

San Diego is a neat town, lovely weather but the worst tasting tap water in America. Since some on this board have claimed that Cal should be able to attract former Raider fans, I decided to take a look at Aztec attendance since the Chargers left San Diego after the 2016 season. I was just eyeballing the numbers on Wikipedia, not actually calculating averages, and there were a couple of major variables: COVID and the new 35,000 seat Snapdragon Stadium being built. But comparing 2016 and 2022, I don't see much of a bump. To be fair, I don't know of SD State has aggressively marketed towards former Chargers fans.

Maybe the Aztecs will be more popular after joining a major conference.

I really believe college and professional football fans are cut from a different cloth and the latter will have virtually zero interest in watching the former, unless they also attended the school.

Look at Wilner's column talking about tOSU cancelling its home-and-home with Washington. One of his recommendations is that the conference go to a 10-game schedule, which adding SDSU would permit. Since one of his other recommendations, that people do non-conference games with U$C and Fucla, is probably not going to be emotionally palatable, this seems like a good alternative, if they come in at a reduced revenue share.

SDSU has not aggressively marketed its sports ever, as far as I can tell, and I have lived here for a long time. They seem to have solid basketball attendance, though.

Has Berkeley ever done a good job of marketing Cal football?
I've long thought that students should get free tickets, and enough seats should be given to local kids' sports leagues etc to largely fill Memorial Stadium. And to Cal staff or anyone with a pulse. Sell the good and great seats, fill the cheap seats for free (wear a Cal hat or shirt, get in to a cheap seat free!); and eventually you'll sell more seats. Empty seats aren't doing us any good. Maybe you make a little money on food and drinks from the cheap seaters. A full stadium is attractive to recruits; an empty quiet stadium isn't. A full stadium is more attractive to televi$e.

The same can be done for the Oakland A's - watching a team that always trades away its star players in an empty stadium is not that appealing.

And get these teams on free broadcast TV stations. Hard for a kid to become a fan if they can't see the team on TV.

Try to get people to attend our olympic caliber swim team meets, rugby, water polo, gymnastics etc. But the most important is football, whether you're a football fan or not.

Don't try to market Cal men's basketball until the team has reasonable results or at least a new coach. You don't want to turn people off.

This is why we need an AD who is from the world professional sports management. There are lots of Cal alums in the industry (a Cal alum would be more motivated, understand our traditions, many of which are being lost, and how to get Cal alums back, as well as how to market to the general public).

San Diego is a bit fickle with their sports teams. You would think their proximity to Mexico would make San Diego a shoo-in for an MLS team. They have a USL team though.

I consider it a pro team town. The Padres. The Chargers when they were there. Having grown up in Fallbrook - North County and lived in Imperial Beach, Hillcrest and Oceanside, the Aztecs have a small following. But not as much as the Padres or even the Chargers who are still followed - despite their departure. My opinion only.

As far as the argument of value. Value shouldn't really be a consideration anymore since SDSU represents the only school left in Cali that would bring anything. San Jose State? No. Davis? No. Sac State? No. Its SDSU or stick with what we got.

San Diego has a shot at the next MLS franchise. Per the MLS commissioner, it's going to be either SD or Vegas. SD's advantages are the availability of SDSU's football stadium for MLS, plus the strong support for the NWSL team that already plays at SDSU's stadium. Vegas already has a solid investor group that is apparently ready to ante up the expansion fee, though Vegas' disadvantage is that they don't have a stadium suitable for MLS, unless the Raiders let them use Allegiant Stadium and MLS doesn't mind having 60,000 empty seats shown on TV during MLS games.

Good weather, hot chicks, tasty brews & food. Add credible access to so cal market that's been vacated, seems like a no brainer as a business decision. Their team will get their teeth kicked in short term, but the access to athletes and their new stadium; shouldn't take them long.

Hell, I remember a lot of fans saying that Utah was going to be the dregs and within short order they were smoking us and the majority of the conference.

Utah has had competent ADs and hires good coaches in football and basketball. It makes all the difference. We do great when we hire good coaches too.

They've been saying that for 10 years. Its likely going to Vegas. SD voters rejected Soccer City in 2018. Yes, they do have Snapdragon. Why the NWSL team is playing there is beyond me. Loyal plays at Torero stadium which seats 8,000.
