How long do you want to ignore this user?
Front page story on Cal Women's Soccer Coach Neil McGuire that leads to a full page on A8 and half of A9.

Complaints of abuse, bullying, body shaming, personal, attacks, etc.

Cal instituted an anti-bullying policy in 2016 with no limits on how long complaintants have to report bullying.

Cal Athletic Department investigations showed "nothing", yet players highlighted in the article like former Cal goalie Olivia Sekany were never interviewed. There was never an independent "third party" investigator.

Sekany (whose Mom is an Alameda County Superior Court Judge) took her final year of eligibility up to UW. Last week, she signed a contract with Racing Louisville, a pro team.

This article was not at all flattering of Knowlton.

We may have a pattern of Knowlton and/or his underlings not taking the complaints of women athletes seriously.

This is old news that is being regurgitated.
The allegations were pre Knowlton.

Anything not flattering about Knowlton also reflects badly on Christ, who gave him a big contract extension

This is old news that is being regurgitated.
The allegations were pre Knowlton.

"In April 2019, three teammates met with Knowlton and Simon-O'Neill to request a formal investigation into McGuire and to jointly submit a four-page complaint, said former goalie Sekany, who shared the document with The Chronicle."

"A few weeks later, Sekany got an email from Knowlton, which she shared with The Chronicle. He said the department and university had talked with coaches, athletes, staff and parents. "Based on our review, we found that your allegations were not validated."

Sekany said she was surprised and asked nearly a dozen parents whether their daughters had been interviewed. None had, she said, including hers."

The allegations certainly overlapped the Knowlton era.

What do you mean by "a connection"? I'm a donor, but not with any kind of influence if that's what you might be inferring?
Just pointing out that this an old story.

Any new complaints? Anyone with the team in 2016 is long gone. What do the current players think? I didn't see any mention of that in the article. Makes you wonder why it is resurfacing.

I've seen plenty on McKeever and woman's swimming but this is the first detailed report I've seen on the similar allegations against the women's soccer coach and a similar pattern of ignoring complaints by the athletic department. And I read this board pretty religiously. Was it just posted to the Olympics sports board or did I somehow just miss it?

This was back in 2016 or so. There was talk about it then but basically they suspended the coach, had an investigation, and then reinstated him. So that was that.

Now they are are bringing it up again because they can and it seems similar. The investigation into McKeever resulted in a different outcome. This will probably be part of the defense for her - men are treated differently - but we have no idea what the allegations are or what the results were, since there was no disciplinary issue. And frankly, if they can him now, he will sue the heck out of the University as caving to pressure and being disciplined on something that he already was cleared.. Double Jeopardy.

It was fairly well publicized in the local media back in November 2020.
Including this article in the Daily Cal.

Former Bears allege abuses within Cal women's soccer program (dailycal.org)

But I believe KTVU conducted a year long investigation and were the first to make light of the allegations of abuse. KTVU's reporting was highly extensive and included a total of 18 pages from a number of soccer players describing Coach McGuire's abuse which can be found inside the article linked below:

Surviving the Game: Allegations of abuse in Cal's soccer program (ktvu.com)

What's demonstrably different is that Knowlton had an independent third party (law firm) investigate the allegations against Teri McKeever, while the University simply conducted its own investigation of the women's soccer coach, Neil McGuire after the women filed formal complaints to Knowlton in 2019.

Knowlton's response:

"We have spoken with our coaches, student-athletes, departments staff, campus staff, parents of current Cal Women's Soccer athletes, and others who interact with the Women's Soccer program," Knowlton wrote in an email, "(and) found that your allegations were not validated."
"Cults don't end well. They really don't."

They may be similar, they may not be. The issue in soccer, however, was years ago. I do not know what steps may have been taken after the investigation, or whether any were warranted. It seems to me that even if there was a problem in 2016 and it was reviewed and widely publicized and then since that time there has been no further reports of problems, maybe the problem, whatever it was, has been solved. If it has been solved and there are no new allegations, what is the point of bringing it up now?

To everyone bringing up that the initial allegations are "old news", allow me to summarize what has changed:

A former player, who was good enough to play at UW after her concerns were ignored, and good enough evidently to play some kind of professional soccer, whose mother is an Alameda County Judge, apparently has evidence that Knowlton conducted a sham investigation in 2019 of her and other players complaints.

Those are bad facts for the Athletic Dept, and a pissed off judge in the county in which you do business isn't great either.

knowlton is a spineless incompetent con artist that is paying for his $1,300,000+ annual salary in part via donations from dumb azz bears fans, the current chancellor's investigation will hopefully bring resolution to his employment

how tone deaf is the athletic department?

knowlton's #2 jennifer simon-o'neil introduced mad dog at the spring game today, she is also under investigation...her making a public appearance is remarkable

This is all simply proof that Christ and her cronies couldn't care less about Cal athletics. It's all lip service as athletics is simply a distraction at cal. The longer Knowlton is on board, the more Christ is culpable on all this.

Shocky, that was Carolyn McCardle introducing mad dog. She also interviewed other coaches and players and did a good job. (I also didn't know who it was at first and thought it was Ashley Adamson for a minute as I was hearing her through the loudspeaker.)

Could be just the opposite: Not that I would ever think in a Machiavellian way, but maybe "somebody" is feeding stuff to the press to turn up the heat on the AD, as if to say, "Wouldn't you enjoy your Golden Years more if you accepted our generous buyout offer of 1/3 of the $$$ remaining on your contract?"

(Feeding an anti-Cal story to Nanette Asimov is like feeding meat to a hungry dog: They will both lunge at it.)

My take is that, over the past year, the powers that be at Cal have come to realize that the Athletic Department should go in a different direction -- for multiple reasons. That eight-year extension? A mistake, let's move on.

I bet you felt the same way about McKeever.
It should have been forgotten.

And it most likely would have been if it wasnt for an Olympic Sports investigative reporter named Scott Reid.
