They are all start as officers of a company with a trillion dollar budget. No one starts as a teacher, joins the Peace Corps, goes to grad school, gets an internship or is unemployed or driving for Uber while looking for their first job. Not all college grads start at Google. The $48,000 a year income (plus "housing" "food" and "relocation"?) for a 2nd lieutenant is both the minimum and the average first year earnings.
