From the Other Sideline – Auburn

Earlier this week, we did a little Q&A for the boys at warblogle.com and today, they returned the favor, answering their questions in reverse.

Here’s the Auburn take for your reading pleasure.

What’s the first thing an Auburn fan thinks of when Cal football comes to mind?

I think of Marshawn Lynch, Aaron Rodgers, and the yellow and blue color scheme. I picture a smaller Rose Bowl that's probably not full, but a pretty campus. I think of okay football.

What’s the vibe like in Auburn after the lopsided win over UMass?

Fans are happy but cautious. They know what Auburn beat, but we also didn't really know what to expect in Game 1, but everything was pretty much as positive as it could be.

Name two Auburn Tigers that Cal fans should look out for and why?

Eugene Asante is a junior LB that transferred from UNC this past season. He wasn't a name you heard a lot in Fall camp, but had tons of tackles and a really smart block on a punt return against UMass. Is he a gamechanger? Maybe, but he's definitely not a name many people were looking at.

This is obvious, but he's new so it still counts. Payton Thorne wasn't asked to do a ton last week, but he obviously has the arm talent and was able to scramble out of trouble the few times he got in it.

Which two Cal Bears worry you the most?

The running back that ran his mouth is the only player I know.

Where does Cal have an advantage in this game?

Home field advantage. The very late start time. The travel Auburn is doing right now. That's it.

Where will Auburn excel most against the Cal?

Size and speed. Pretty much the most important parts of the game.

Who are your two favorite Cal Bears of all time and why?

The only two names I know: Marshawn Lynch and Aaron Rodgers. Oh, and the guy who hit the trombone player because that's just funny.

What is your score prediction/analysis for this game?

The Cal fans will be excited for the first quarter and it will be close, but eventually the difference in talent will show up. Auburn wins 34-14.

Where will Auburn and Cal end up this year?

Auburn will be in the Capital One Bowl at minimum, with at least 9 wins. Cal will go 8-4 and play in the Sun Bowl.

What do you think about Hugh Freeze?

He has brought excitement to the football program quickly. He is basically doing what Bruce Pearl has done. He knows he's gotten a 2nd chance at a big school and he won't take it for granted. People are rallying around him and believe in his coaching and recruiting ability.

Earlier in the week, we answered their questions for us. Here was our response:

What’s the first thing a Cal fan thinks of when Auburn football comes to mind?

SEC football with a pretty strong winning tradition. Cal fans have been looking forward to this home and home series for years and will travel well to Auburn.

What’s the vibe like in Berkeley after the monumental win over North Texas?

Many Cal people like myself saw the ingredients for a pretty solid football team this season, particularly with all the key portal additions, but spring ball and fall camp can only tell you so much. Sometimes you just need to see the team play against someone else instead of your own team to know what you’ve got. The big win was a relief. Cal often plays down to their underdog opponents in recent years so to win by 37 made a lot of people breathe a sigh of relief.

Name two Golden Bears that Auburn fans should look out for and why?

I’ll go with one on O and one on D. On offense, Jeremiah Hunter is a future NFL receiver. Smooth, great hands, consistent and tough to cover. On D, many would go with 1st team all-Pac 12 MLB Jackson Sirmon but in this case, I’ll go with CB Nohl Williams. He’s another future NFL guy who’s tough to beat in coverage and brings some swag to the field as well.

Which two Auburn Tigers worry you the most?

I’ll go with Hunter on offense if he plays. I think he may have the most upside of the Tiger backs. And on defense, I’ll go with Keionte Scott. Cal really liked him coming out of JC and he’s a versatile weapon at CB or nickel and on returns.

Where does Cal have an advantage in this game?

I’ll go with Cal’s run game against the front 6. They didn’t play the run very well against an inferior UMass team and Cal has a lot of weapons in the backfield, particularly RB Jaydn Ott, another future NFL guy.

Where will Auburn excel most against the Cal?

To me, it’s a tossup between Auburn’s rushing game against Cal’s front 7 or Auburn’s backfield against Cal’s passing game. Auburn may well come out on top in one or both of those categories.

Who are your two favorite Auburn Tigers of all time and why?

Gotta go with Kevin Greene to start. He was an animal. And of course, Bo Jackson for both football and baseball. One of the best pure athletes of all time.

What is your score prediction/analysis for this game?

After getting a better look at both teams last weekend and due to the late night game at home for Cal, I’ll go with Cal 31 Auburn 27. If you asked me last week, I’d have probably reversed the score.

Where will Auburn and Cal end up this year?

I’ll go with 7-5 regular season for both with both in middling bowl games.

What do you think about Hugh Freeze?

Great coach with a questionable past he’ll have to shake off by running a clean ship for at least a few years IMO and a great staff. Very strong recruiter, too, particularly in the portal this year. Probably didn’t make the best decision in referring to Cal’s defense as essentially basic, where Auburn knows what they’ll be seeing.

As a bonus, earlier this week, we did a podcast with Auburn’s Up Tempo Live Podcast. Our segment starts at the 4 minute mark:

Lol. If this is representative Auburn's attitude as a team as well, I really like our chances. They seem a bit delusional here, and basing things off the past. How do we go 8-4 yet lose to them? Lol. Just shows they think the pac is garbage because it has been in the past. Feeling even better about this game now.

I watched one preview video from Auburn fans and they talked about how the Pac-12 doesnt play pass defense. The reasoning, the number of yards put up by Pac-12 QBs last week. The reason this doesnt make any sense is because there were no conference games last week, and the pass defenses getting torn up were from other conferences.

Point being, people find evidence for what they want to believe, even if the evidence doesnt make any sense.

The fact is neither team knows much about themselves at this point. Auburn is one of the easier games on the schedule, and the game will most likely be determined by turnovers and special teams miscues.

I don't mind the arrogance really. Can you imagine these people's lives if they didn't have football? They live in Alabama.

Could be a little more informed about the sport if you're going to run a blog, but again.. Alabama.

I was Out at Warblogle. This dude is universally mocked on all the "real" Auburn boards. Put it this way, he is just some dude, not a beat writer. For the BCS he was begging people on different board to give him money to travel. Here is an article from Philip Marshal, long-time beat writer.

#PMARSHONAU: Auburn has more talent, but will that be enough?

Is Auburn's football team talented enough to beat California on Saturday night in Berkley? It almost certainly is. But that does not mean it will happen.

So much in this game seems to be in Cal's favor. It will be Auburn's second game with a new head coach, mostly new assistants and dozens of newcomers on the roster. Traveling across the country and playing at 9:30 p.m. CDT is a challenge like no Auburn team has faced.

The 2002 team played USC at the Los Angeles Coliseum, but it was the first game of the season on Monday night. The 2013 team played in the BCS Championship Game at the Rose Bowl, but it was there for a week before the game.

This feels different and is different. Auburn's football team arrived Thursday night, some 48 hours before Saturday night's game. Head coach Hugh Freeze said he would have preferred to go Friday and not have all that time to wait. But, as anyone who traveled to the West Coast knows, it takes time for body clocks to adjust.

And, while Auburn's team might be bigger and faster and more athletic, Cal is good enough to win if the Tigers are not the best they can be at this point in the building process. That means, among other things, not turning the ball over, not getting needless penalties and resolving the alignment problems that surfaced on defense in a 59-14 victory over UMass.

Auburn played last week without cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett, Jack defender Jalen McLeod and running back Jarquez Hunter. Pritchett and McLeod are expected to play. Their return should be helpful. Hunter, who was suspended for the first game, made the trip, but his status is uncertain. Middle linebacker Austin Keys is out indefinitely. That will not help.

Most of the Auburn newcomers were enthralled by the atmosphere in their first game at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Now, they have to deal with playing on the road before a sellout crowd. Auburn fans will be there and be heard, but it will be a hostile environment. That will be another first for those newcomers.

A win would allow the Tigers to almost certainly go to Texas A&M in two weeks with a 3-0 record and lots of momentum. A loss would be disappointing but certainly not season-destroying.

So it is going to be in more games than not as this team pursues its destiny.

I'm tired of hearing about the travel. It's one flight that might be 2 hours longer than usual, it's not like the team is going to the moon or hiking the Pacific Crest trail. Having one flight of a 4.5 hours should be totally manageable, and if it's not, that's on you for failing to adequately prepare.

Did Cal complain about the travel when we beat Texas, Ole Miss, North Carolina or Minnesota at their place? No. Did Cal blame the losses at Notre Dame, Ohio State or Maryland on the distance? No, Notre Dame had the phantom offsides, Ohio state was the coach's decision to kick the field goal, and Maryland had the weather advantage. It was never the travel, and if you blame the distance traveled you are destined to be a loser.

I couldn't agree more about the differing levels of knowledge when comparing our fan base to others. Yes, our fan base may be smaller, but we're a lot smarter.

BI obviously has a wealth of knowledgeable posters and mods. And over on W4C, you've got guys who do the preview write ups who will watch entire seasons worth of tape of the opponent before writing the preview.

And then you listen to the UNT and Auburn podcasts (alleged football hotbeds) and they rarely break down tape, never talk Xs and Os, and have basically zero knowledge of their opponent. I was listening to the UNT podcast, and he was surprised Ott was so good because he read somewhere that Ott had an extremely disappointing freshmen season.

I hate to generalize. And this is going to come off wrong to some. But it's just a fact that as a collective fan base we're just smarter than other fan bases. We are used to doing our homework and doing research. We are used to using facts to back up our arguments. It's just how we are wired. Its just funny how we get labeled as people who don't care about football.

6H AGO FOOTBALL
KNOW THE ENEMY: Cal '23
Joshua Holsey

Auburn's season-opening win against UMass last weekend was all but over at halftime.

The Tigers' trip to Cal this weekend will require better play and more precision. That's because the Golden Bears, fresh off a 58-21 win at North Texas, have enough offense to cause serious problems Saturday night. They rushed for 357 yards, earned 30 first downs and even went 29-of-37 through the air.

Coming home with a victory won't be easy for Hugh Freeze.

Still, the Tigers showed several strengths of their own against the Minutemen last weekend and the pass game, which wasn't particularly good, is expected to take a step forward this week. First-game jitters seemed to be an issue.

Does Auburn have enough to put Cal away on Pac-12 After Dark? Let's take a look ...

Sam Jackson, the former TCU quarterback, started last week yet went down with an injury. He's expected to play Saturday.
Sam Jackson, the former TCU quarterback, started last week yet went down with an injury. He's expected to play Saturday. (Brandon Wade/AP)
Offensive Coordinator Jake Spavital, now in his second stint at Cal, showed a balanced offensive attack in Week 1 compared to his track record with a 60/40 run-weighted play split. Historically, Spavital (who comes from the Dana Holgerson / Kevin Sumlin branch of the Hal Mumme Air Raid coaching tree) routinely has led Top 10 passing attacks at the Power 5 level (with prior stops at West Virginia, 2017-2018 and Texas A&M, 2013-2015). Similar to UMass, the running ability of Cal's QB Sam Jackson has lead Spavital to embrace a heavier run scheme.

Cal showed two quarterbacks in Week 1 after Jackson went down with an apparent injury and N.C. State transfer Ben Finley (brother of former NC State QB Ryan Finley) came on in relief. The latest out of Berkeley is that Jackson expects to play and will get the start on Saturday, but given Finley's execution of the offense (24-of-34 for 289 yards) don't be surprised if Jackson has a shorter leash in a big game for the Bears. There's not a ton of tape on Jackson he's thrown 10 passes in his entire college career but he has plus ability as a runner and can create when things break down. His running ability is a clear difference maker against Power 5 level teams.

Leading RB #1 Jaydn Ott is a complete back who'd start pretty much everywhere. He's a patient runner who finds holes even when they're slower to develop. He has a good burst once he finds daylight, but also is strong enough to break tackles. Ott is coming off of a big game against UNT where he rushed for 178 rushing yards (on 20 carries) and 2 TDs. He also has plus ability as a receiver and had 46 receptions as a freshman in 2022. To spell Ott, Cal uses #22 Isaiah Ifanse, a thicker runner who is effective in short yardage and red-zone situations but also has some receiving ability as well.

WR #3 Jeremiah Hunter is the best of Cal's wideouts. Hunter lines up out wide where he's effective on bubble screens but also is a deep-play threat that can take the top off a defense (He averaged 16 yards per catch last season). Outside of Hunter, Cal has plenty of experience in sixth-year seniors #14 Monroe Young, a slot receiver with decent speed, and #7 Brian Hightower, who shows good route running ability and lines up out wide. The WRs aren't the best run blockers on the edge so expect Auburn's defensive backs to take away the bubble screens and outside runs early. Tight Ends #89 Asher Albering and #87 Jack Endries had some key blocks in Week 1, which sprung runs in Cal's running game. Endries has some ability as a receiving threat.

As a whole Cal's offensive line is a bit below average compared to some of the other Power 5 offensive lines Auburn's front will see this year. Cal's running game is heavy gap scheme-based with counters, powers and pin-and-pull plays a variation of the buck sweep which Auburn fans might be more familiar with two pulling offensive lineman on a sweep to the edge.

Auburn should have the advantage against the interior of Cal's offensive line; they're a tough bunch but aren't the best athletes. They had poor pad level against UNT and are below average in space when they pull on running plays. They were able to get to second-level defenders effectively against UNT, but they'll have a tougher time doing that against Auburn's more athletic linebacker corps. The interior of the offensive line is led by team captain, cener #73 Matthew Cindric, who is the most experienced starter on the team. Cindric is flanked by guards #60 Brian Driscoll and #71 Sioape Vatikani (who appears to be a slightly better run blocker). Of note, Cindric was injured early against UNT and it's unclear if he will be healthy enough to make the start against AU.

If Cindric can't go, look for #60 Driscoll to slide to center and for #74 Matthew Wykoff to come into the lineup at guard.

Cal tackles #62 Barrett Miller and #72 TJ Session are the better unit along the offensive line though they weren't all that challenged in Week 1. Cal stayed ahead of the chains and didn't get into long passing downs. An interesting wrinkle in Cal's offense is that that on gap-scheme runs, Cal pulls their backside tackle just as much, if not more than, their backside guard. This may be a result of the athleticism of Cal's tackles relative to its guards, who aren't terribly effective when moving in space. Session is the best athlete Cal has along the offensive line and shows it in his pulling ability.

Kicker #16 Michael Luckhurst is largely unproven (1 career FG attempt coming into 2023) and is coming off a rough outing against UNT where he was 1-of-3, including a missed FG from 32 yards. The crowd at North Texas was largely empty so he'll be thrown into the fire for the first time if the game comes down to a pressure kick for the Golden Bears.

Linebacker Jackson Sirmon is a native of Brentwood, Tenn.
Linebacker Jackson Sirmon is a native of Brentwood, Tenn. (Cal Athletics)
Peter Sirmon, the former Tennessee Titans linebacker, now is in his fourth season as the Golden Bears' defensive coordinator. All of Cal's most recent NFL stars (Aaron Rodgers, DeSean Jackson, Marshawn Lynch and Jahvid Best) have been offensive players, but Sirmons' defense was the best part of Cal's team in 2020 and 2021.

These Bears don't take a ton of chances and instead focus on playing assignment-sound ball and tackling well. The embodiment of that mantra is Cal's middle linebacker #8 Jackson Sirmon, Peter's son and a transfer from Washington. At 6-foot-2 and 230 pounds, Sirmon is a menacing presence behind the line of scrimmage and has no qualms about sticking his nose in any gap that demands his attention. He also is afforded some chances to cover inside receivers and tight ends when the Golden Bears go into a Dime look and he's almost always up to the task.

Opponents targeted him 47 times last season and he conceded 31 catches. That's not bad at all for a middle linebacker.

Though pass rush wasn't expected to be a strength for this group in 2023, edge defender #33 Myles Jernigan was the Golden Bears' most disruptive player against North Texas. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound senior created four pressures, a sack and three STOPS (tackles that constitute a failure for the offense) during his 33 snaps on the field. Cal runs a base 4-3 system and you'll see Jernigan all over the place within a few yards of the line of scrimmage.

The secondary didn't look good during the first half last week. North Texas hit a pair of deep shots and both had some element of miscommunication or just plain miss. In general, the star back there is #2 Craig Woodson, a 6-foot strong safety and second-team all-conference pick. He's quick and plays with intuition he anticipates things really well though he missed 10 tackles last season.

He was just OK last weekend.

Things I'll be watching ...

Overall, Auburn's defense needs to focus on execution in their base defense this week. The running game misfits (i..e., when a defensive player does not go to the proper gap and leaves a hole in the defense) they displayed in Week 1 will create giant problems when facing a running back with Ott's ability. If the interior of Auburn's defensive line can cause penetration it will get Cal outside of its comfort zone and into longer passing downs.

Cal's defense isn't known for aggressive play-calling, but they were able to create good pressure off the edge out of base formations. That means Auburn tackles Gunner Britton and Dillon Wade (and possibly Too Tall Miller) must be ready to slide laterally and absorb those threats. If Cal gets too aggressive there, a delay/smoke draw could be a nice counter punch.

In the passing game they used some RPO concepts with Jackson and Ott to keep the defense off balance. It will be interesting to see how reserved Spavital is with Jackson's plays as a runner. He'll need to run to keep Auburn's defense honest but that's also how he got injured in week 1 on a QB Sweep at the beginning of the 2nd Quarter against UNT.

Cal showed some pace offense which could be a challenge; multiple times they were able to snap the ball with 30+ seconds on the play clock.

Cal's running game benefitted by UNT over respecting their passing game they had a lot of favorable run boxes with five defenders. I'd expect Auburn to put an extra hat in there since the Tigers won't be as worried about the match up between their DBs and Cal's WRs.

While Cal eventually blew out UNT, it was a close game (27-21) until the final seconds of the 2nd Quarter. An interesting moment was with 12 seconds left in the 1st Half, Spavital called a pin-and-pull which resulted in a touchdown from around the 8-yard line, which is a bold call for someone from the Air Raid coaching tree.

With Auburn facing its first Power Five five team on the road, this will be a game of unknowns a good test to see how the Auburn team plays on the road and with a 9:30 p.m. CDT kickoff. Starting fast will be a key to success. The Cal defense is not as strong in the secondary, so I expect to see Freeze and offensive coordinator Pjhilip Montgomery show more in the passing game. The Auburn defense matches up well across the board against Cal's offensive line and wideouts, which will give the Tigers the ability to slow down the RPOs and run game of Cal. I see the Tigers running away with the victory.

Auburn 41, Cal 17

What I love about Wilcox (there's plenty not to love) is he never comes out with prefabricated excuses before games. He comes out with "we're going to go control what we can control"
It seems like 99% of other coaches try to do that but can't themselves and always drop in a caveat of some sort both pre and post game.

You all are really getting a poor sampling from some of the "expert" sites and especially Warblogle. As I stated before, most serious Auburn sites are up to speed on both teams. I am so much so that I am really worried about this game. Cal has improved dramatically, but so has Auburn even just season removed from the Harsin debacle where poor coaching and his extremely trashy family caused negative growth in the program. But I digress.

I guess it just must be some story angle.

I apologize. My post probably came off as a bit harsh. But I'm just tired of reading the absolute drivel on some of the Auburn free boards and hearing the absolute delusion on the two auburn podcasts I've listened to.

Look, we all understand that Auburn has a long and storied football tradition. We all respect that. And none of us think this is going to be easy. And I appreciate auburn fans are confident. That's fine. I guess, all I'm asking is at least have some basis for that confidence other than "oh SEC > pac12" caveman reasoning.

I lived in California for 30 years and now live in Alabama. It is a great place to live with lots to do. You more than live up to your moniker, though inferior intellect would be more apt.

I've been all over the world and concluded that people are mostly the same wherever you go, just the tastes are different. The taste of one person may not suit the tastes of another. It doesnt mean anything and you can't infer anything beyond one person likes blue and the other gold.

The Auburn program has certainly cleaned things up. Multiple players suspended for witnessing and videotaping the #1 running back (Jarquez Hunter) having carnal knowledge with a woman. One of them selling access to the video on twitter for five dollars, Fair price, at least. Hopefully the woman was sober and consented to both the intercourse and the videotaping. Not very confident the truth will ever come out, though.

Hugh Freeze showed how tough a disciplinarian he is by suspending the players for 1 game (U Mass) but allowing them to practice and attend the home opener in uniform.

Yeah. Real tough love. Pretty sure Nick Saban or Wilcox would have kicked these degenerates to the curb (and they would have ended up at Auburn, Miami or Oregon via the transfer portal).

You are 100% right. If the idiots who refer to the midwest as flyover country and who mouth degrading stereotypes about Alabama had actually lived in Alabama and/or in Illinois or Nebraska, then they would certainly have the right to their opinion that California living is superior.

"It just means more." They are simply valuing football above all else - staying true to the SEC motto.

It's just funny how we get labeled as people who don't care about football.

What I love about Wilcox (there's plenty not to love) is he never comes out with prefabricated excuses before games. He comes out with "we're going to go control what we can control"
It seems like 99% of other coaches try to do that but can't themselves and always drop in a caveat of some sort both pre and post game.

Wilcox has job security so he has no need to make excuses for losing.

And as to our fan base being more "knowledgeable" I'd say it isn't as broad. Our fan base is a core group of alums and long time fans. Go visit a 49er message board and you see a lot more idiotic posts mixed in with cogent analysis. Overall I've been impressed with the reasonableness of most of the Auburn analysis. They are clearly worried about this game. I'm looking forward to increasing the size of our fan base and filling the stands with former Raider fans.

This is precisely what I hate about modern college athletics.
"The running back that ran his mouth is the only player I know"
From the official "cfb experts down south ya'll"
Meanwhile I know at least a 100 posters here and w4c that can name half the auburn two deep, what scheme they run on both sides, where freeze and each of the coordinators were before auburn, etc. yet people get wisdom from these geniuses.

And they'll come in. Get their asses handed to them and then make a boat load of excuses for why. Then causally go back to saying cal is irrelevant.

Guess what dub t's it is YA'LL who turned cfb into a $ sport and that is your mistake because we have a lot lot lot lot lot more of it than you do. And we're in a recruiting lava bed and now in a conference full of each of the other top 5 recruiting hot zones.
Jaydn if you're reading this go buck wild tomorrow. Make a ****ing statement!

For SEC teams it is like "going to the moon". They choose to have OOC games come to them.

Real question, what was up with your RB's suspension? I could be misremembering or confusing him with someone else but didn't he have a sex tape that was released online by someone else? Why would that be punishment-worthy?

From the start, including the head coach, Auburn is setting this up so that, if they lose, it will because of the KO time and the travel. They will never admit that they got beat by Cal. That is a guarantee.

What's funny is that they regularly take credit for beating teams that have to travel along ways to play them.

I just don't understand the Auburn whining about travel west. I travel all over and there really is no issue with jet lag on trips west.

Agree.

It isn't about MILES TRAVELED, it is about time zones. Travel as many miles as you want in the same time zone and it's not a big deal.

However, traveling back East is miserable. Every time I do it I hate my life. I usually do it for work and that means getting to meetings at 8am which is 5am our time which implies getting out of bed at 3am our time. It's awful.

Traveling west isn't a big deal at all. Whiners who come out here from back East say "I got up so early in the morning because I just couldn't sleep anymore." Boo hoo. At least you got a full night's sleep and were fully awake during the workday.

The travel won't impact Auburn hardly at all, especially if they arrived yesterday. By tomorrow night they will be adjusted.

Are you being sarcastic? You think that having five friends in your room watch, cheer and videotape you having intercourse with a woman is not worthy of a suspension? And do you think there's even a tiny chance that the woman was impaired, incapable of giving informed consent and unaware that she was being videotaped and then peddled on twitter for $5/download?

I understnd that there is (in our legal system) a presumption of innocence--facts are still being investigated and these football players have not been convicted or, afaik, even charged. However, there is certainly ample evidence that their behaviors cast a moral cloud over the Auburn football program. Any respected college football coach would suspend these young men from all team activities pending the outcome of the investigation. If you were the head coach would you play these men now in order to win games. What's the harm? Maybe you have to apologize in a few months that a rapist led your team in rushing yardage? No big deal if you're a sleazebag and all you care about is winning football games.

Where did you get any of that from what I said? I asked a question and gave all the information I had about the situation. In what world is saying "I don't know the story of what happened" the equivalent of saying "I agree unequivocally with any action they took"?

The life expectancy is literally a decade less then California.

Every statistic Alabama is near the bottom. Crime, healthcare, environment, poverty, education, womans rights, income. Insanely high infant mortality, insane child poverty rate. But they are doing a great job banning that evil CRT in schools, so they got that going for em!

You couldn't pay me to enter that ****hole.
