Sac State up - Idaho not far behind!
College football top 25: Sacramento State leaps North Dakota State in FCS Power Rankings after Stanford upset (msn.com)
Playing strong FCS programs is high risk / low reward. Far better to find weak FBS teams to be your patsies.
Idaho was 7-5 last season but overall have had 3 winning seasons since 2000. They weren't a strong FCS program when we scheduled them.
Idaho was FBS and part of the Sun Belt Conference until 2017 when they dropped to FCS and rejoined the Big Sky Conference starting with the 2018 season. Not sure when they were schefules but Idaho is a strong FCS program in arguably the best FCS conference in the country.
Here's Idaho's record since 2018 when they joined the FCS:
2018 4-7 (3-5 Big Sky)
2019 5-7 (3-5 Big Sky)
2020 2-4 (2-4 Big Sky)
2021 4-7 (3-5 Big Sky)
2022 7-5 (6-2 Big Sky)
Idaho had an above average season last year and look very good this year, but they haven't been an FCS juggernaut in the 6 years since they joined the FCS. They are a combined 24-31 overall and 17-21 in the Big Sky conference. I'll agree that the Big Sky is probably the best FCS conference.
So I was at a conference up there last year and there speaking to a colleague who lived there and he was saying that the Idaho people were deciding that they wanted to invest more in football. That most of the legislature and the state university infrastructure were mainly Idaho alum and they are tired of boise being the star in the state. Sounds a bit familiar. Anyway. Guess they are spending state funds for
Idaho to get better. The drop down to FCS was a real painful thing I guess. Expectations are that they eventually move back up. But if they continue to win at the FCS level then maybe that is better.
Boise is not doing nearly as well as they were.
So Idaho is the land grant college established in 1889 and located in Moscow.
Idaho State was established in 1901 and used to be "Idaho Tech" then "Southern Branch" around the time our own "Southern Branch" was established.
Boise State was founded in 1932 by the Episcopal Church and was Boise Junior College until 1965.
Became a public in 1969 as "Boise State College."
Maybe to avoid confusion Idaho should just compete as "Moscow." Or maybe "Ida"? Everyone knows "Ida" is short for Idaho as in Ore-Ida Potatoes! (Oregon could compete as "Ore"). Or how about if they use "Ida Moscow"?
Maybe change mascots to the "Moscow Mules?
