Our kickoffs and kickoff coverage were horrible. Can't let a good team have that type of field position, seems like this happens every year.

Our kick coverage has been horrible for 6 games now.

Because our Special Teams Coach Vic D'Soto has no special teams experience.

Also when I asked about Sam I wasn't suggesting he was being an unsupportive teammate - I literally didn't see him on the sidelines and wondered if he was at the game at all.

Unfortunately, Cal has to be one of the slowest teams in the conference. This has cost our defense, ST kickoff coverage. The DL has very little to no athleticism, which allows teams take advantage of our deficiencies. We have the worst pass rush, although our run D is solid, since we have run stuffer types.

I love how Ifanse runs tough and Ott is explosive. Our OL has improved. We have no threats at WR that teams have to game plan for with the exception of Hunter. We need a serious infusion of speed on this team. We need dynamic game breakers on both sides of the ball.

Disconcerting

I liked it since it got Mendoza another rep. The game is over. But our RS QB can use all the reps he can get to help him prepare for the next game.

Maybe the coaching staff learned from the UW game when they did not let Jackson and the Jet score at the end?

If that's the case, then I'm glad to see they can learn from instead of repeating the same mistakes.

People argued it doesn't matter but at least they did the right thing for Mendoza and the team this week.
At least today's game proved we no longer have a QB issue. The clear starter is Nando. Perhaps Jackson will go to WR or transfer out. tbd. BTW, I never saw Jackson on the sideline, did you?

I was watching on TV. They don't show the sidelines too much, mostly the field and commercials. If Jackson transfers he will probably have to sit out a year, since he used his first transfer to come here.

We were more athletic than Oregon St. I don't know what game you were watching but you weren't watching the players moving. At all. You have no idea how athletes actually move and what team speed actually means.

I am pissed off at this game, but I am sick and tired of idiots, literally ****ing idiots, trying to diagnose games. You are ****ing stupid.

What game are you watching. Their DL is way more athletic especially off the edge. There WR's Gould and Bolden are way faster than our DB's. Maybe you didn't see our DB's getting roasted on every fade route. Why you think Sirmon went to a soft zone to try and keep everything in front of our defense. Before you start calling people idiots don't act you are some football geru jackass.

Wilcox hired his friend Browning as DL coach who is from Oregon and played at Boise.

DL is all about athleticism and the DL coach needs to be a recruiter with ties to areas with top DL talent like Hawaii, Texas, SoCal, Georgia….

I agree . Wilcox biggest demise maybe hiring too many folks with ties to his past from Oregon or Boise St. it's too bad he did not do everything to keep DB Coach Alexander.

Wilcox's Rolodex is made of 1 index card. He has no ability to get anyone from anywhere in the country other than his Oregon, Boise, or Washington days. And those guys are average at best and sometimes downright terrible. None of them are good recruiters

Disturbing observations.
1) The coaches took half the season to recognize Mendosa's abilities,
2) The defense puts no pressure on the qb, AND doesn't blitz, why?
3) Cal doesn't run wide often enough for the opposing defense to think about it.
4) Kickoffs have to go out the back. Use a different kicker for kickoffs and field goals.
5) Underneath crossing routes showed some success, but not utilized much,

I don't pretend to be a coach, or know the answers, but these are obvious to a casual fan.

Tyson Alualu has now retired from a long NFL career. He is from Hawaii, played for Cal and then played professionally in Pittsburg and Florida. With our move to the ACC (including Pitt , Florida Stare and Miami) and no longer playing games in the PNW, it might might make sense to focus on our new opportunities with guy that brings NFL cred to land future NFL talent from key recruiting areas where we will play games.

This is a bowl team in the ACC right now. Half that conference would be at the bottom of the P12.

No, he is right. Getting to 6-6 or 7-5 in the ACC with a team at this level is more than doable, especially if we add yet another patsie to the OOC schedule. 4-4 in the ACC needs only 2-2,OOC. Given our scheduling we are likely to go 3-1 OOC which means we only need to go 3-5 in the ACC which is more than achievable.

And most people here will be happy with that. Wilcox might even get an extension.

I am not sure if Tyson Alualu has been coaching but he would be a welcomed addition to the staff. He would be a great fit and I'm sure could be a great recruiter for the DL. He uses to get after it at Cal with Cameron Jordan. That was a tough DL that played fast.

What? The WR was wide open deep when he released.

Mendoza has shown a lot and deserves to start next week but that was just a bad throw
Didn't it get tipped. Or he was hit as he threw. Because the ball just wobbled out

He was hoping to play in the NFL this year:

DL coaching is recruiting great athletes and teaching technique. His recent NFL cred, Hawaii, California, Polynesian, Pittsburgh and Florida name recognition plus Cal alum knowledge and enthusiasm would be unmatched. He is the best guy I can think of for recruiting and developing great DLs for Cal especially as we head to the ACC.

If you matched up P12 teams head to head vs the ACC equivalent on the conference totem pole, the P12 would win 9 or 10 games out of 12.

No, but the point is we can win 6 or 7 games with an ACC and inevitable patsie OOC schedule without being any better than we are now.

That is a good news/bad news thing. Most will be content with that. Wilcox might even get extended off of that.

Listen to Mendoza's post game, Jackson was helping him prepare at the hotel, quizzing him, and left him a note this morning "You are going to have a great game, love you brother."

The Bears didn't back down. Let's go with Mendoza and let the O gel around him. Our D has seen two best QBs at Wash and OSU. If our O can deal with Utah's aggressive D and the crowd noise, we can steal a win next week if we score half the points we scored today.

1) 1/3 of the season.
2/ we blitzed and got smoked. Definitely need better pressure regardless of blitzing or not.
3) we ran some plays wide and did okay.
4) agree
5) not sure, but Mendoza can hit more variety of passes than Jackson could. The game plan should develop for that.

1) 1/3 of the season.
1/3 if you have any delusions that we will make the PAC 12 championships and a bowl game. For a mediocre team like us, game 6 is halfway through the season already.
