I hope the coaches figure out how to get SJ5 on the field.

I doubt he would switch. If he doesn't get to play QB here, he'll move on next year to a school where he can be starting QB.

Not likely.
He's used his one transfer. He can't go anywhere.
He can, he'd just have to sit a year. Equally important, who's likely to want him after failing at 2 schools? He might have to drop to a lower tier if he insists on being a QB.

Has Jackson ever been asked about the possibility of playing another position? He did voluntarily play WR in High School.

At his size (and QB ability) he would never have a chance in the pro's at QB. But his speed is elite, does he have the ability to become a top receiver??? HIs stats for one year in High School were great.

At size he theoretically has a chance if you look at Kyle Murray and Bryce Young (and consider that he still has time to add weight and bulk through the rest of his college career). I wouldn't rule it out on face. SJV is listed at 5'11", 195 lbs currently while Kyler is listed at 5'10", 207 lbs and Bryce is 5'10", 204 lbs.

Now of course who knows how accurate his college height/weight reporting is, but it'll be whether he can show something through his ability and not his physical measurements alone.

Mendoza looked good but I don't think he looked so good that he now has the starting spot nailed down for the next 3 years.

Cal fans get way ahead of themselves sometimes.

I agree. He looked way better than I would've expected but it's not like he was blowing me away with ball placement and arm strength on some of those throws. I'd like to see him get another start and I think he's earned as much but there's room to improve/room to regress. And we'll see if anything changes now that there's some tape of him out there.

SJV converted in high school from a receiver to a QB. I doubt he wants to go back to receiver. https://calbears.com/sports/football/roster/sam-jackson-v/22457

I doubt he wants to sit.
SJV was sitting at TCU.
He'll be a great receiver, again.
Can you imagine how burned the DBs will be.

Exactly. I could see him in the NFL as a receiver who throws and can back up QB, but so far, he's so jackrabbity, I just don't see him as a starter QB.

Randle El was 5'10. He had a pretty great career. Just saying

Welp, yeah, his height does not help, but his style and instinct is more that of a receiver.

Nah man. I'm agreeing with you. Randle El is a perfect comp for what SJ could be. They are the same size. Randle El was a good to great college QB who realized he was too small to play QB in the NFL who ended up having a great career as a WR

SJV last played WR his sophomore year in high school. Playing any position is actually a craft. He would be going from being one of the fastest QBs in college football, to just another fast-but-small receiver... and an inexperienced one.

Bottom line, would consider a switch if it's something he really wanted to do

Russell Wilson at 5'10 is another QB that was considered too small to play QB with people recommending he change positions or stick with baseball.

Again, he slightly bigger than Kyler Murray and Russell Wilson were in college, both deemed to be too small but are great NFL quarterbacks. He is playing better than Murray did his first year with Spavital at aTm.

He has 4 years of eligibility. We need QB depth. Let's play Mendoza against Utah and presumably going forward but continue to develop both. That does not preclude Jackson getting on the field at another position while also working out at QB, but people that thnk having great speed means you are I'll suited for QB and need to be a RB or WR are living decades in the past. It is simply too soon to write him off.

Kevin Riley's best statistical season by far was as a redshirt freshman in 2007:

36 of 56 (64.3%) for 563 yards 10.1 ypa 5 TDs 1 Int for a 174.6 passing rating.

We thought he was the second coming.

By his senior year people on this board were openly hoping he would get injured so Brock Mansion could get a chance.

We need to continue to develop Mendoza AND Jackson (and Finley and the rest of our QBs). It does not make sense to put all your eggs in one basket. Mendoza looks like the guy right now. Hopefully he continues to do well, but it is way too soon to give up on Jackson. He has a great arm and elite athleticism. He has shown flashes of greatness but needs to improve his decision making and consistency. What if he has that a year or two from now? Or even a few games from now?

Moreover, starting just with Boller, every single Cal multi year QB has lost time to injury: Boller, Rodgers, Longshore, Riley, Maynard, Goff, Garbers… usually the season is ruined. We need to develop QB depth as much as any other position if not more so.

He can graduate and transfer or try for a hardship waver. I don't think I've seen the hardship waver ever rejected.
Yeah, the hardship waiver is rejected all the time. Most recently Darrell Jackson at FSU.
