Played at Cal under OCs Baldwin and Musgrave: Has notebooks filled with mistakes to avoid.

Maybe he could be a GA.

Said this in another thread but I think Davis Webb (Cal guy, TX roots, young, NFL pedigree, Spavital tree) or Kellen Moore ((young, Wilcox connections, NFL pedigree, likely to be fired with Staley) are better fits for OC

Would love to see him back as a GA. Let's be real, for a guy with pretty marginal arm talent, his pretty good college career and ability to stay on practice squads for a couple of years means he really understands the position.

Keep it in the family! Love this. Also hoping Mendo is our OC when his pro career comes to an end.

Although I liked Chase as a player, and thought he was a good college quarterback. He seemed to not see a lot of open receivers, so I question his effectiveness in diagnosing plays, therefore questions his effectiveness in a coaching role.

I'd feel much better with Webb given all I've heard.

Yeah, Garbers is not yet qualified to be a position coach at this level. Could Webb be overqualified? He works in the NFL? A quick check of his salary would be revealing. Maybe QB Coach and Passing Game Coordinator...

Davis Webb is the QB coach for the Denver Broncos.

That's interesting Davis coaches a guy who is older, been in the NFL longer, and has had a decorated career. But coaching and playing are too different things. Look at Mike McDaniel.

He's overqualified for a college QB coach role, but underqualified for a college OC role. I'd like to see him organize a system, supervise staff, and call plays first.

How about hiring him as Cal's QB Coach and Assistant OC. (Assuming, of course, that he'd be willing to leave Denver for Cal.)

Still think that's a downgrade in pay and prestige for him now. He could probably outright get a college OC job in a couple years with progressively increased responsibilities.

True. He would be a good hire as a QB coach and passing game coordinator, but... (1) Does Webb want a career as a college coach, or an NFL coach? (2) Webb played just one season at Cal, so he likely feels no more attachment to Cal than Spavital did.

The key question here is, did either of them ever go to Top Dog? If the answer is "No", then they're just shameless carpetbaggers.

Being the QB coach and assistant OC would be a chance to get a job with increased responsibilities relative to being the QB coach for a QB with more NFL experience than he.

That's fine, so long as Cal's next OC is lights out and stays at Cal.

Regarding the carpetbagger question, I specifically remember Webb being asked about Cal and Berkeley at the end of the season and responding, "I love this place!"

Davis Webb is a very smart offensive coach and born to be a head coach some day. These are not my thoughts but my son told me. Who am I to question him?

I thought Webb's face-of-the-franchise skills were outstanding when he came here in 2016: Arrived in the summer and, to this outside observer, managed to win his teammates over (not always easy for a guy coming in last minute, having been handed the starting spot). Super well-spoken with the media. Always said the right thing. Seemed 23, going on 30.
