Guys I was a coach at Del Norte High where Mateen was kicking last year. If you don't know, let me inform you that he was the 3rd rated kicker in the nation and had made two 50 yard fgs and a 55 yarder during last season. His leg is NFL level big...His boot is jist fine.
Oregon gave him a tour but only offered a walk-on, Cal was preferred walk-on with a promise to give scholarship if he was the main kicker. UCLA offered a scholarship but he liked Cal better.I guess kickers arent a priority to give schollys to? Amyways, lets throw away the "not a big boot" narrative, that kid is legit and an even better person. I hope he lands in a good spot.

I'm glad he's a good person. Regarding the "big boot" question, how do you explain...

- the short kickoffs, resulting in Luckhurst eventually replacing him on those

- the fact that they never let him try FGs past 43 yards or so (granted, some of those situations were "modern analytics says you go for it" situations, but by no means all of them)

Best of luck to Mateen; he did pretty well for us this past season.

So by not giving him a scholarship we probably lose at least one early game by missed field goals.

Well, they did try him on kickoffs, and he wasn't getting them to the end zone. So Luckhurst regained that part of the job. But he was so accurate on shorter field goals. Tough to lose him. I don't recall any 50+ attempts by either kicker after he took over the field goal job.

It's all so stupid. You have a problem. You solve the problem. You eliminate the solution and hope the problem doesn't come back. Why not just keep the problem solved and focus on other areas that need improvement? Instead you're taking unnecessary risk and expending extra effort to do it. So stupid.
Please give to Cal Legends at https://calegends.com/calegendsdonate/donate-football/ and encourage everyone you know who loves Cal sports to do it too.

Au contraire: We win an extra game because we get somebody better.

Maybe!

KEO signed with TCU which must be a disappointment after it was rumor Washington and Ohio State might want him.

Maybe Elams-Orr heard all those stories about Sonny Dykes's defenses and how there are no sufficient words to describe what they did to Cal football so he decided he needed to experience it for himself.

Hardy Nickerson Jr. had 111 tackles for us in 2015. It is not terrible for a linebacker to play on a team that runs tempo on offense. Not the kinds of insane numbers Weaver put up in 2018 and 2019, but better than anyone since.

Don't get me wrong, I greatly respect the guys who suited up for Cal. But Sonny ykes' (no D) defense was atrocious. I'm sure you can look up the rankings much better than I, but I don't believe any of the Cal defenses under ykes was ever even above average in all of FBS.

That said, it looks like TCU recently hired a new DC. It's the former head coach of Boise State, Andy Avalos. Avalos was fired by Boise State, his alma mater, partway through the season this past year when the Broncos wound up 5-5 after having gone to the MWC Conference Championship game last year. The Broncos met the University of North Texas Mean Green and gave up 32 points (and 435 yards) in the Frisco Bowl that year.

I honestly don't know how good Andy Avalos's defenses are, but given Sonny's track record with defensive coordinators, I'd bet it's not going to be great. Then again, Avalos is probably better than Peter Sirmon.

I didn't say the defense was "good" not even close, it was the opposite. However, a defense that gets all 3 and outs is a great defense but the players will not have gaudy stats in a defense like that.

Good luck to him, either way. I just hope he doesn't come to regret his decision to leave Cal. Somehow, I suspect he will.

Do we know that? So UCLA just used one of their schollies on a kicker with a 45 yard max range who probably can't do kickoffs? I'm not sure that they did that, but if they did, I'm happy for Mateen and happy for UCLA.

We also got a kicker from the transfer portal (Ryan Coe from North Carolina) who has a video posted of him kicking a 65 yard field goal while practicing. He was injured much of the season. Hopefully it won't be a recurring problem.

he looks big enough such that he can tackle opposing players during a blocked kick or kick off return
