Bears Add Speedy Utah Frosh Portal Transfer Mikey Matthews
The Bears made another nice addition to their wide receiver room picking up Utah frosh wide receiver Mikey Matthews, a consensus 4 star receiver. Matthews joins Notre Dame portal transfer Tobias Merriweather as WR additions in the early signing period for spring ball.
The 5-10/180 Utah soph receiver took trips to Arizona in December and Baylor earlier this week before visiting Berkeley this weekend. Rated a 4 star high school receiver after prepping at Mission Viejo High School, Matthews got off to a strong start at the collegiate level as a true frosh in 2023, adding 29 catches for 261 yards along with 309 yards on kick returns. He also finished fourth in the Pac-12 in kick return average (20.6) and combined kick return yards (384). Matthews also had a career-high seven receptions against Cal for 53 yards in the Utes win over the Bears.
As a prep receiver, Matthews was offered by Michigan, Tennessee, Florida State, Texas and more before committing to Utah in 2022. He was named to the prestigious UnderArmour All-American game and had 177 catches, 2,402 receiving yards and 28 touchdowns over 33 games in his prep career, with 61 catches for 934 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns his senior season.
Matthews becomes the 26th overall 2024 commit for the Bears through the portal, grad transfers and prep recruits.
