Even though this board is frequently overrun with "Fire Wilcox" demands, you'd have to set the possibilities regarding a Knowlton-selected replacement this way: 10% chance the program improves with the new coach, 20% chance it stays about the same, 70% chance that Knowlton's guy does a worse job.bluehenbear said:

Camp 1: It is hard to win at Cal. Dykes got fired after mediocre records and then took TCU to the frickin national championship. Wilcox got Cal to a bowl game, so he is at least a decent coach but doubtful to be a big time winner.
Camp 2: His record is 36-43. Even at a school that favors academics over big-time sports, 36-43 is not going to cut it. Stay away.
This may be what's happening. A bear can dream, anyway. I would imagine that despite everyone wanting wilcox gone, were it to become a reality, half of the team, or more, would enter the portal and panic would ensure...unless, Riverboat Ron were coming to town. The UW situation was different. It wasn't a typical search. The NCAA pressured them to fire Neuheisel in the offseason because he had bet in a March Madness pool. Neuheisel later sued UW and the NCAA and received a big settlement.

Plus he has 7 years of HC experience learning on the job! Don't base your decision on his record, he has it all figured out now.

Gilbertson took over a program at Cal that went 10-2 and finished in the top 10. He tanked it and got fired in year 3 after 2 conference wins, going 3-8. Wilcox took over a 5-7 led by an unpopular coach (who took TCU to a natty in 2023), and took us to a bowl game this season. The program was looking a lot better in Snyder's last days than in the last days of Tedford and Dykes. Wilcox hasn't tanked the program. He has just flatlined Cal at mediocrity.

Me too. But he DID find Madsen, so there is that.
After hiring and even extending Mark Fox first. And extending Wilcox twice. So there is a chance he makes a good decision (and that one probably for the wrong reasons) but the odds are not good.
And Madsen's team is currently 6-11 so even Wilcox's best decision has not proven to be a great one yet. Amir Abdur-Rahim is 9-5 but beat Florida State and has won 7 of the last 8. And missing out on Dennis Gates can never be forgiven or forgotten.

Wilcox and Sirmon are attached at the hip. Unless on his way out Wilcox convinced Knowlton to promote Sirmon to HC….
Let's wait and use an extension possibility as motivation to do better in 2024. Then discussions can be considered.
