This man does not care about you.

This man loves you deeply.

The choice Sunday is a no brainer.

Goff with some outstanding comedic timing was not something I'd anticipated seeing this drizzly Wednesday. Thanks for sharing.

Goff - 32
Santa Clara - 31

Late 2-point conversion to eligible lineman wins it.

How about a missed extra points after a Purdy scramble for TD?

Goff - 31
Santa Clara - 30

Purdy scrambles for late TD run on 4th and goal. Missed extra point dooms Santa Clara.

When the 49ers started, college football was definitely king in the Bay Area and I've wondered if they originally chose their Red and Gold colors in order to appeal to Stanford and Cal fans respectively,

I didn't come from a family that followed sports so I really didn't pay too much attention to pro football. I knew the early 1960s 49ers teams were pretty bad and didn't pay attention to the Raiders until their first year with Darryl Lamonica at QB. From then on, I was a big Raiders fan until they slunk off to LA. After that, the magic was gone and my allegiances have been casual and varied.

Pretty sure Goff grew up a 49er fan. But as an old blue, gotta go with Jared and the Lions.

It is pretty easy for me since I have never been a 9ers fan even though I grew up on the north coast. Go Goff and Lions, Tigers and Bears! (Ok, no Tigers) i was a graduate in the Bicentennial year too.

#1 pick. Vs the last pick .... should be fun and pulling for Goff to become the next Cal super bowl winning QB.

I was a Niners fan well before I was a Cal fan. Just because someone went to my school doesn't mean I'm going to root for whatever team they're now on. If that were the case, I should have been a UCLA fan all those years Medlock kicked for them.

Same for the Olympics; I'm not rooting for country XYZ instead of the US just because there's a Cal athlete representing XYZ.

If you're referring to Tyson Alualu, he's only been on the team for less than a month. And even if he was on it for the whole year, doesn't matter. I don't change who I root for in a head-to-head just because a player I like is on it or isn't on it.

How many Michigan/Detroit fans do you think are going to be rooting for the Niners just because Moody and Ronnie Bell and Ambry Thomas are on the team?

This could almost have been words out of my mouth:

"The Rams returning to LA, drafting Goff #1, wearing blue and gold was the trifecta. The Rams were my team. Then after McVey threw Goff under the bus, the opposite. They became the team I rooted against. I currently root the Chargers and Lions. I have zero permanent allegiance to any NFL team."

The one difference is that I'm more ambivalent towards the Rams and don't care much about the Chargers. But following Detroit, this year in particular, has been a lot of fun.

Go Bears! Go Lions! Go Goff!

On the contrary, if you go to an Iowa State message board I am sure you will see plenty of Cyclone fans rooting for Purdy and the Niners even if they live in Wisconsin (last week) or Michigan (this week) for much the same reason many people here are rooting for Goff and the Lions even if they are from the Bay Area.

But root how you like, it won't make a difference.

Agreed. If I were a 49ers fan, I would be rooting for the 49ers to win... and for Goff to have a good game. Nothing wrong with that.

(but, personally, I'm not a Niners fan, so... )

Detroit can be in the Super Bowl by winning Sunday. Cal in the Rose Bowl is pretty much mythology at this point

~ "He smiled understandingly-much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced--or seemed to face--the whole eternal world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself, and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey."

*Listen to the recording of the radio show the day after Altamont. Sonny Barger calls in to KSAN to give the Angels' side of the story. He goes off. His speaking voice was like Robert Blake's. From 1968-1972 I used to see Sonny a few times a week on his Harley because he lived pretty close to O'Dowd.

I am a Cal fan not just because I went to Cal. But because I love everything cal stands for. If I had gone to school at USC, I'd still maybe follow the team, but I wouldn't be a diehard fan, because that school does not represent who I am.

I root for bay area teams for some of the same reasons. I grew up in the Bay Area. I chose to go to school in the Bay Area and raise a family in the Bay Area. I love living here. I think it's one of the greatest places to live on earth. A lot of who I am is represented in the Bay Area. Plus there's nothing like sports to bring together a community.

So I don't care if the Dallas cowboys (for instance) had every single one of my favorite cal players on it. Dallas does not represent me.

Maybe that's too tribal for some. But I don't care. That's how I personally choose which team to root for.

Nobody has been a bigger 49ers fan than me.

Grandpa Okaydo used to hang out at Kezar.

My family has had season tickets since 1927.

We our 49ers fans through and through.

My great great grandpa is Levi Strauss, namesake of Levi's Stadium.

Yet I've decided to root for the Lions this weekend. Why? Because I am first and foremost a Cal fan. And part of being a Cal fan is making sacrifices.

Go Goff!

Got that same Rams ticket stub. Different section. Don't remember the number, but we were on the left side of the press box on the 10 yard line. Way up near the top of the 'Stick. Lots of rowdy Kezar refugees among us. Good times back then.
