Looks to me like that number was calculated using transfers. They simply used the HS ratings for the transfers. That 2023 roster has several transfers that were rated 4 star in HS. The most obvious one for Cal fans is Sturdivant. But Latu, Motavao, Garbers, Kam Brown,Titus Mokiao-Atimamala, Kyle Ford, Jaylin Davies and Jay Toia all started their careers elsewhere and were 4 star rated players. And several of these players have exhausted college eligibility.wc22 said:

They were 24th in team talent this last season, that is with that particular metric not properly taking into account transfers, which UCLA focused on.
UCLA has talent and will always have talent because it is so easy to recruit to. Kelly was a horrible recruiter and he still had a top 25 team in HS talent ratings, better if you consider the portal.
LOL they must be devastated then. They're exactly 17-17 against us over the last 3+ decades. Only the most overconfident Ucla fans and most self-loathing Cal fans expect Cal to lose when we play. It's not the '70s or '80s anymore, just like it's not the '30s or '40s either.DoubtfulBear said:Losing to Georgia is the expected result, no one would be surprised. As is beating us. I'm assuming he meant once they're in the B1G earning ~3X the media revenue Cal will earn in 2025/2026. Although devastated would still be a stretch, more like embarrassed.WalterSobchak said:LOL they must be devastated then. They're exactly 17-17 against us over the last 3+ decades. I wouldn't mind a home and away with UCLA the next two seasons as our "A" non-conference game, but it looks like we're booked through 2027, as we have a home and away with Florida in 26/27 and already have a full slate of OOC games in 25 (@OSU, Minnesotta, @SDSU, UNLV) :

Wow, we haven't exactly embraced the non-conference cupcake strategy.

I will concede that fucla fans live in fantasy land about the status of their program, but he's way more optimistic about this hire and their prospects going forward than most of their own fans.PtownBear1 said:I'm assuming he meant once they're in the B1G earning ~3X the media revenue Cal will earn in 2025/2026. Between their B1G money vs. our partial ACC share, new recruits wanting to play P2, and likely a highly sought after HC next year (vs. year 10 of Wilcox on OC #5), it would be shocking if UCLA loses to us by then
I'd love to hear what wiaf has to say on this subject too, but in general Drake has been (heavily) involved with (for?) Cal in both the negotiations to move to the ACC and hiring the next chancellor. Both of these are (massive) departures from SOP so to me at least that indicates an increase in recognition at the system level that sports have been neglected.socaltownie said:what did drake say? I don't think their fans live in fantasyland about football. (Basketball is a different story.) I think many ucla fans have an attitude about their team that will be familiar to anyone here: "Woe is us, this is so typical, why can't we ever have nice things, why haven't we fired [insert name of current coach] yet?"WalterSobchak said:I will concede that fucla fans live in fantasy land about the status of their program, but he's way more optimistic about this hire and their prospects going forward than most of their own fans.PtownBear1 said:I'm assuming he meant once they're in the B1G earning ~3X the media revenue Cal will earn in 2025/2026. Really? I have never met a ucla fan who is arrogant about football. They might tell you Cal is terrible, but they don't think their own team is great.WalterSobchak said:
The next time I meet a humble fucla fan will be the first. Even on this board we have "Cal" fans telling us how great fucla is and how Cal is terrible by comparison. Where they get this arrogance is anyone's guess, but they have it.
I mean you kind of make my point with your qualifiers IMO. They're arrogant, just not about football. But they will tell you Cal is terrible at football and their team is also not great. So what's the implication? Cal is worse.BearSD said:Really? I have never met a ucla fan who is arrogant about football. I've never had that experience with any ucla alum IRL. On the internet, yes, there are delusional ucla types.WalterSobchak said:I mean you kind of make my point with your qualifiers IMO. But yeah, to a person the ones I've met think fucla is not only better, but MUCH better. Not just in football, but in everything. All sports. Academics. Location. Everything. Some of the worst encounters I've had have been with fucla students and grads, in real life and on here.
It may be because I don't go to LA often so I really only meet them up here in NorCal. Maybe they're extra defensive, IDK. But I've had random interactions with fans from most other pac schools that were pleasant. Most but not all of those were also in NorCal.BearSD said:I've never had that experience with any ucla alum IRL. I don't think I've ever met a UCLA fan. I know several alumni who barely associate with the school, yet they wear the baby blue stuff all the time. In fact, I see UCLA clothing here and there and have had conversations and they have no idea how the football or basketball team is doing. It's almost like they just like the color or had nothing else to wear. Weirdest set of folks. Very little personality. Weirdoes, mostly.BearSD said:Really? Years ago I had a fucla fan behind me physically try to pull me down multiple times and tell me to stop standing to cheer. This was in the alumni seating at CMS. Cal was on defense. We almost came to blows.bearsandgiants said:I don't think I've ever met a UCLA fan. I know several alumni who barely associate with the school, yet they wear the baby blue stuff all the time. Not right now they're not. Last I checked we were kicking their ass up and down the Rose Bowl, dominating all 3 phases of the game. Smacked their OL around like rag dolls; knocked out their starting QB. Dominated them on the ground and lit them up through the air. Multiple explosive plays. Oh and a nice little kick return too. If this rivalry had a trophy it'd be sitting in Berkeley. That's all that really matters to me.Econ141 said:WalterSobchak said:I mean you kind of make my point with your qualifiers IMO. Well aren't they better in football? The series history (now complete) is owned by them 55-34-1. That's pretty dominant even though it's pretty much a wash over the past 30 years. That, but on larger part their location is what made them more attractive to the networks in this realignment phase. Location is totally subjective but hey it was an advantage for them in that critical aspect. It's also one that seems highly sought after as they get the most number of apps.
Now academics - I'd have a big gripe there. They can point to any ranking about how close they are (even tied) and I will laugh. All those mickey mouse factors aside, they don't hold a candle to Berkeley.

I guess if you're living in the past maybe they can argue they're better. I mean they'll always have 1972 to 1989 to cling to. Then again if we're living in the past we have 5 titles to their 1, so there's that. I'll take the titles.
