Oregon State running back Damien Martinez plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens April 15, sources told ESPN. Martinez finished second in the Pac-12 with 1,185 rushing yards and had nine touchdowns on 194 carries in 2023.

Is it time to revisit the issue of whether Cal was crazy to schedule OSU for football? Not saying Cal is a lock to win that game, but the odds of that win keep getting higher. And what is happening with OSU's highest profile players is unfolding pretty exactly as expected. This was exactly the calculus that went into the staff wanting to schedule OSU for 2024 compared to some of the other options.

Martinez is a very talented RB. Reported NIL number he's walking away from is very good for a RB at any school. But you can't overstate the significance of dropping down to the G5 level and the roster/ coaching impact that can have. This is the fate Cal avoided by the skin of our proverbial teeth when we got into the ACC.

It was always idiotic, and insane to make it a home-and-home.

Would you have preferred a home and home with Utah? Because that was one of the other four options on the table.

It takes two to tango. We can stamp our feet until the end of time but that doesn't mean another school is going to magically make room on their schedule to accommodate our temper tantrum. The staff had a finite number of choices. OSU wasn't going to give us a home and away. Staff picked the best option they had at the time.

Cal does dumb things all the time. This is not one of them.

Home and home.

Home and away.

Ok?

There are a dozen other Mountain West teams (or other G5 squads) we could have called up, we need to stack wins these next few seasons going into the next realignment cycle and we will look foolish if we are dropping games in Berkeley to teams that are on the outside at the moment.

And the ACC asked us to schedule a P5 team. They're trying to push all their schools to do that. And yes, there are some teams playing ABC schedules in the ACC but those games were scheduled long ago. We've been through all this already anyway. Bottom line there was no magic better solution to all the variables the staff had to solve for.

I was pretty unhappy when this game got scheduled. I had been one of the loudest voices saying that we had to find wins no matter where and no matter how if we want to get ourselves into a power conference in the next round of realignment. I dug into it. I came away convinced they made the best of the situation. And at this moment in time their predictions seem to be coming true about what was going to happen to OSU.

We absolutely could still lose this game. Particularly the away one. We have on more than one occasion given teams that were otherwise looking at 0-12 their only win of the season. It is absolutely maddening. But it's up to the staff to deliver against OSU. I pray to God they can.

Oregon State's Damien Martinez claims NIL collective 'lied,' Dam Nation says it has '1000 percent' delivered on commitments
Please give to Cal Legends at https://calegends.com/calegendsdonate/donate-football/ and encourage everyone you know who loves Cal sports to do it too.

To be in the Top 1% of all NIL collectives we only need around 10% of alumni to give $300 per year. Please help spread the word. "If we don't broaden this base we're dead." - Sebastabear

Thanks for reading my sig! Please consider copying or adapting it and using it on all of your posts too. Go Bears!

Game day transfers are the logical step. Halftimes and timeouts would be much more interesting.

"Like they say, (it's) a business decision. All these fans saying I got all this stuff and that they gave me everything. The collective didn't give me anything. They lied.

Yup. And there you have it. Lots of promises being made to athletes in the NIL space. Lots of promises being broken. I don't know exactly what went down with Martinez and their collective disputes this version of events, but the "promised $400k and given $100k" dynamic is all too common.

It's an unfortunate aspect of a completely unregulated industry. But it shows once again how important it is you trust the people you are doing business with. Which is why if a player remains in good standing at Cal and doesn't enter the portal they will get 100% of what they were promised from us. Always.

Not like Cal is going to stop recruiting the Northwest, so they get to show the flag as it were...easy enough trip against a program that clearly is in transition...not sure why people thought (think) Oregon St was going to somehow maintain their talent level equal to what it has been....

It appears that the standing promise from the OSU collective was $100,000 per quarter, and Martinez is using that to say he only got $100,000 even though he still had $300,000 more coming. Sounds like a smokescreen from Martinez and his agent. Pure speculation on my part, of course.

I don't know where we are with NIL per se but those dopes in Corvallis are beginning to understand that schools need to have more than just money to offer...

Getting into the ACC was so big. Sports at Cal would have been super depressing otherwise.

I know that's some speculation on their board. Not sure I'm buying it. Obviously Martinez had a deal for last year so I think when he talks about how much money he has received he would have to be factoring in that as well. And the idea that he would expect this year's deal to be paid in full by April seems borderline ludicrous.

I'm not really sure what happened with him. But we do know from several players who have left for "greener pastures" those pastures turned out not to be so green after all. Particularly if you equate green with money. Lots of promises made out there. Far fewer promises kept.
