Very exciting to watch! However, I can't understand why, in that set of circumstances, Australia didn't have 1 or 2 people at mid field to prevent exactly what happened. I'm not very familiar with Rugby rules. Do they forbid a prevent defense?

7 vs 7 on a rugby field means you can't "stack the middle", an opponent that passes the ball well will lateral the ball down the line to the open player near the sideline.

Breakthroughs and long runs are a staple of rugby 7s, and more rare in regular rugby union where you have 15 aside, so the finish wasn't that exceptional, it was the fact that the US kept the Aussies within one score in the last minute that was more remarkable.
