Who is going to what games?

My wife just gifted me with tix to Cal-SMU - very excited about it! I've been storing up air miles for Delta (via AmEx) and Frontier (their own MC card) for this season.

What games are you traveling to?

Heading to Auburn and FSU. MAYBE Big Game if it matters. So excited! Has anyone heard anything about the official tailgates? I love doing at least one per year on the road to hear the band, shotgun a beer with Ski and immerse myself in California Gold and Berkeley Blue.

Go Bears!

Making the trek out to Pittsburgh. Have heard it's a pretty underrated and cool city to visit

Going to Auburn for my annual father-son trip. Thinking about SMU solo.

Canceled Auburn but if we win that one then I will be a sucker sitting in Tallahassee hoping we pull that off

We have NC State at home this year but you should circle that road trip when it comes up in my opinion. Their campus is meh but NC is a cool state and you're a short trip from Memphis or Atlanta.

But the real reason to go to a game at NC State? They're one of the only teams that still allow you to leave at halftime to tailgate which is always fun

Seriously thinking about Pittsburgh. My dad grew up about 30 miles away and so I would be taking my kids on sort of a "finding your roots" trip (plus Cal Football!). Will depend on how it looks in terms of their classes and sports.

A Cal friend of mine is moving to Tallahassee in a few weeks, but that trip for me might have to wait until next time... if there is a next time.

I'll be at SMU for sure and drive up to Ok and visit old stomping grounds I'd rather forget like Fort Sill.
I have a few projects around Orlando and Gainesville so I'll probably make an excuse to go to Florida the week of FSU and drive up to Tallahassee Friday night and get an airbnb or something.
Still debating on Auburn.
Thinking about the Wake game as well but it's on a Friday and SFO flights to Charlotte are pretty sparse and then it's a bit of a drive.
Not really looking forward to Dallas in winter. Cold and dry is not my jam.

Florida has a caa chapter but I think most of them are based in Miami. The SMU I'm guessing we'll have a large contingent as Dallas has always been a hot spot for alumni.
Hopefully the florida group organizes something for the Tallahassee trip. Would be great to see some former Bears show up given that's game 1 in the acc.

Cuse fan here who does tailgates

Wake Forest is one of the easiest spots to tailgate. They have cash lots literally across the street from the stadium. One of my favorite games to set up a tailgate. Not a lot to do in Winston-Salem but maybe a side trip to Asheville? Get a non stop into CLT or RDU...rent a car. Only a 2 hour drive from either location. If you don't mind a connection the closest airport is Greensboro Triad.

FSU is actually very easy for a easy tailgate location if you don't mind a walk. The basketball arena (Tucker Civic Center) is a little less than a mile but the walk is very easy. Cash lot with a grocery store two blocks away. https://www.tuckerciviccenter.com/directions-parking

Getting to FSU is another story. I suggest flying a nonstop to Orlando or Tampa and spending a few days there and driving to the game. Spend 1 night in Tally or closeby in a town 45-75 mins towards your airport city.

SMU never been there. They do have a robust tailgate scene. Probably easiest to walk into the tailgate village with a 12 pack of beer or some wine and join in with some well heeled SMU fans. There is parking available it appears north of the stadium.

My advice is to ask the fans over here:

Official tailgates on the road are the bomb. I only did two for Cal football, both with my son. Oregon, when we had Rodgers. We lost but my son had fun kicking field goals inside their field house, and UCLA when we lost with Longshore as our QB (he had a bad foot or something like that.

BTW, looking up Longshore I was remined of this great website ranking the best Cal quarterbacks. You can affect the rankings with your vote.

That ranker list was more interesting than I expected. I concentrated on the lower rankings and my votes moved a few mediocre QBs out of the top 25. I also got Charlie Erb from the 1920s Wonder Teams into the top 25. Rose Bowl wins and National Championships gotta overrule sub .500 records, right?

Maybe discrimination against Jews? Just kidding.

I think Cal easily is in the top ten scchools for the best list of top QB's. Currently, in the NFL Cal has two of them.

Not just any 2 QBs, an all-time great and a top tier QB.

Eastern Oregon Bear. Recently visited Bend, OR for the first time. A great area for loca beers and lots of nice golf courses. The town of Bend was very nice and a bit upscale. Loved seeing the river that had something placed into it to allow surfing without really moving.

Several years ago I read that east of Bend if very politically conservative and, at one time, there was talk for eastern Oregon to secede from Oregon to become a part of much more conservative Idaho. Any truth to that historical view, though I have been told it would never happen now. Tx.

To further digress, I have been to North Bend, OR. The proposed State of Jefferson includes parts of northern California and southern Oregon.

Thirteen counties in Eastern Oregon are interested and have voted to join Idaho. But measures like this are unlikely to ever become reality; states don't like to lose population

Headed to Wisconsin to see a Green Bay Packers vs. Detroit Lions game with Jarod Goff, then headed to North Carolina to see the Bears play Wake Forest. Should be a great week of Football and partying with friends. Can't wait. Go Bears, Go Lions!

Eastern Oregon to Idaho is not going to happen. Oregon will never approve it, and I doubt 2/3 of Congress will approve.

Maybe the State of Jefferson happens as part of a "compromise" allowing statehood for Puerto Rico and/or Washington DC?

Exactly. At least 85% of Oregon's population is on the west side of the Cascades, so I doubt you'll ever get a majority of Oregon voters or politicians to approve it. Even in my county, which hasn't voted on the proposed move to Idaho, I think it would be fairly evenly split.

Bend is a nice area. I understand that it's the only US city with a volcano inside the city limits (Pilot Butte, which is more of a cinder cone than a volcano at least to me). I did have someone argue with me once that Jackson, MS has one too, but apparently it's been dormant for over 200 million years and is hundreds of feet underground. I don't think that counts. Anyway, Bend is too cold and snowy in the winter for my tastes but the rest of the year is quite nice. I live about 200 miles away, so I don't go there very often. Bend has become a retirement location for Californians, so it's politics are more liberal than the rest of eastern Oregon. Homes are expensive.

Since Deschutes County has the largest population in eastern Oregon, that makes it even less likely that eastern Oregon will join Idaho. Anyway, watch out what you wish for. I think there would be widespread voters remorse if they had to start paying sales tax as a part of Idaho and had the minimum wage cut in half.

Pittsburgh is an absolute midwest ****hole. The 20 story buildings next to their city center municipal courthouse area are abandoned with broken boarded up windows. Coming out of the tunnel to the 3 rivers is cool, but then you enter Pittsburgh.

When I tailgate I always set up downtown near the city municipal center. Sigh

Pittsburgh is reinventing itself after the steel industry collapse. Do some research and you'll find some cool areas near the stadium to keep you busy for a 3 or 4 day trip to see Cal play.

TexanMark - just wanted to point out (you probably already saw this) that the person you are addressing, as indicated by his handle, 'ducktilldeath' is an Oregon fan and will likely not be going to Pittsburgh (or most other places) to watch Cal play.

Good luck to the Panthers this season (except against Cal).

I spent several weekends working there, walking almost everywhere. It was an ugly ass, dirty, depressing place. Perhaps that's just the midwest. Milwaukee was the same. When the highlight of an entire city is the sportsball stadium, well, again, perhaps thats the big midwest cities. (The Brewers stadium, whatever its branded, is super cool and then you leave and you're in Milwaukee again).

Most of Oregon is fairly conservative. Portland is an outlier but has the largest population. Saying that, outside of Portland there's not a lot of political fervor in Oregon. The east side of the state is pretty laid back. I live in Redmond which is just north of Bend. Bend is slightly left politically but you wouldn't know it just by driving around. Nobody here really spends their time hunting for political arguments. I just wish people would stop moving to central oregon. Bend's growth is going nuts and it's effecting Redmond now. It's not just Californians moving here but a lot of Portlanders escaping too hah. Most people that move out here like the quiet lifestyle. People are fleeing the big cities in droves it feels like. I remember living in Vacaville as a kid when it was about 10k pop. in the 80s, then the 2000s hit and it grew to over 100k seemingly overnight. That's what it feels like is happening to the Bend/Redmond area right now. Redmond is building tons of apartment complexes right now which is great if you're a builder, not that great if you live here.

Anyway back to the topic lol. I don't think I'll make any east coast trips this year. Will definitely see the bears when they play in Corvallis. Possibly might make a trip to Syracuse next year to watch them play if I go visit a buddy of mine who lives in Long Island but that's not for sure plan atm. Out of all the trips, I'd probably enjoy going to watch them play at Clemson whenever that is, I always did want to visit South Carolina.

The area of Milwaukee by the lake is quite cool and walkable, good breweries, restaurants

Pittsburgh is lively, full of interesting ethic neighborhood, great museums and food

Perhaps living in a boring, cultural s$ithole like Oregon has not prepared you well for anything but chain saw accidents
