For all teams Cal plays at ACC locations this season and next --

1) Which locations are there currently for non-stop flights in getting there? I'm guessing that, for those locations, Cal fans should be able to conveniently arrive at the ACC locations after a single flight in time for dinner there if they leave the SF area before noon.

2) For flights that require a change in planes to conveniently arrive at the ACC locations after the plane change plus driving time to the ACC location, what time would the morinng flight from SFO have to be to arrive at the ACC location by 8 p.m. to eat dinner there given the three hour time change flying east? Can that be done through an SFO flight out only by a morning flight, say 9 a.m., out of SFO?

I'm a researcher but not on this type of question. Thanks.

I should note that if I am right that Cal would expect to have at least 1,000 fans attend all away ACC games, they would need to have at least four airplanes available just to transport those Cal fans on both non-stop flights plus flights that require a plane change to arrive at the ACC destination in time for dinner. Most likely that would be on a Thursday, not Friday, the day before the game.

I've never seen someone so obsessed with dinner.

This is the barbeque algorithm.

Places with crappy barbeque- Boston, Pittsburgh,
Miami - can be reached for dinner.

Places with good barbeque-Carolinas, Louisville, Virginia - you may miss dinner

Dallas is reachable for dinner but that is the beef not pork conundrum- not easily solved .

Best BBQ I have had was in Austin. Went to four famous BBQ joints in one day there. I had to wait for four hours at Franklin BBQ, though there were lots of Cal fans to talk to while waiting. The next day I watched the Bears hold on to beat Texas by a point. I think the full game can be seen on YouTube.

"regular season in conference travel"

Still, how is Hawaii not on the list?

As expected, mostly souther BBQ cities are featured.
i
I have been to Franklin BBQ in Austin. Had to wait five hours in line to get in, but fortunately that was a day before Cal's glorious close win over Texas and there were a lot of Cal fans on line, to the time passed quickly. I can talk about Cal football for hours.

Also have been to Nipomo in California. Famous but I only only a B-. The Hitching Post, near Buellton, above Santa Barbara, is famous for being featured in the classic and great wine movie (pinot noir) movie, Sideways, from 20 years ago. A classic. The way

I give Rancho Nipomo BBQ an A. Their tri-tip sandwich on a Telera roll is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Don't use the BBQ sauce; add a big helping of pico de gallo from the condiment bar.

Hawaii should be on the list. Even though they only have three conference road games this season, travel to those three games (SDSU, Fresno, Utah State) adds up to around 8,000 air miles.

Yeah, MWC only has 7 conference games to accommodate having every team play WSU or OSU. Hawaii flies to WSU which also doesn't count in the mileage total. Limiting the mileage total to conference games only obscures how much traveling teams are really doing.

Made a mistake on my review of Nipomo. Would rate is a B+ rather than a B-. Probably because my girlfriend at the time was so high onit.

This is way off. First off why is it only including conference games? Second, what are these one way flights. Even ignoring Auburn, flights to Tallahassee, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, and Dallas would be more than 8,300 miles

Franklin's is good but I favor pork. Memphis and South Carolina punch above their weight.

So, to broadly summarize, you mean the South, but probably not most of Florida.

That is more south Florida. Much of the rest of the state is Southeast Alabama.

Quality BBQ in Atlanta at Fox Bros!
For Ga Tech games, pre game meal at the Varsity is a must - although I can't guarantee how your stomach will react a few hours later.

I've had bbq all over. Part of the rating has to do with the venue and location. Can Santa Barbara bbq be as good as Fayetteville?

Best I ever had was Pappy Red's in Cumming, GA (north of Atlanta), I think. My business hosts said to go in no matter what. I pulled up to the place and it was a road house in the worst way- building half way under the interstate overpass, dirt and rock parking lot, bad roof.

I swallowed hard and went in. There was a sheet of visqueen hung from the ceiling with a hole in the middle, weighed down by a window sash weight on a wire and a bucket on the floor under it. Place was packed (that told me to soldier on). Had the best bbq I've ever had. I rolled out of there speaking the purest suthin you've ever heard.

I think you'll travel better than expected to schools back east. I bet you have alumni in places like NYC, DC, Atlanta, Raleigh, Florida....

Nonstop flights:

Miami, Pitt, Georgia Tech (Atlanta), Boston College, SMU(Dallas) are all in major cities with nonstops to the west coast. Leave early or mid morning and you can get there for dinner.

North Carolina, NC, State, and Duke all use the same airport, RDU. There's usually a single mid-morning (around 9am) nonstop flight out of SFO by United that'll get you there by 5. You'll have to leave early morning (think 6:00am) to make it to dinner using any of the one stop flights.

No nonstop flights, but you can make dinner with a one stop trip if you leave early(think 6:00am) in the morning:

Virginia Tech ROA Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional airport about 40 miles from campus.
Wake Forest GSO (Piedmont Triad international) about 30 miles from campus.
Clemson uses GSP (Greenville/Spartanburg) airport about 45 miles from campus.
Syracuse uses SYR (Syracuse Hancock International Airport) in town
Louisville uses SDF in town
Florida State uses TLH (Tallahassee) in town
UVA uses CHO (Charlottesville) in town

My wife was born in Texas and my brother-in-law used to live in East Austin, right down the street from Franklin's, but other than one time to see what was the fuss, we always went to Sam's, an East Austin institution;

But what I will always think was the best BBQ I ever had was every plate I got at Flint's at 2:00 am while drunk and stoned….

Maybe it can't be the best bbq unless it comes from places like this.
