Cal should be the next team to be invited to host College GameDay if it has a good season record prior to that game, because it clearly has had the #1 college (or pro) football play of all time.

If Cal is invited to host ESPN College Gameday, Chancellor Rich Lyons might be invited to appear on that show as I have read he attended the 1982 The Play game and hopefully was watching when Cal scored the winning touchdown on the last play of that game. Hopefully, he wouid be willing to comment on his reflections of that game and The Play, if he watched it. I was there to watch it and later hosted two The Play parties that included showing a continuous loop of The Play.

Cal has a good chance to host ESPN College GameDay. Only six major college teams have not done so.

Nobody gets College Game Day unless there's some serious rank weight (and especially if it's blue-blooded) involved. Having never appeared on College Game Day probably works more against Cal than for Cal. Basically Cal's gotta win, get ranked, and hope there's nothing more exciting or more highly ranked happening somewhere else that Saturday.

I think it's that simple.

Example illustrating how long a shot it is for Cal to get Game Day this season: Cal could be 4-0 and Miami could be 5-0 come this Oct. 5th and there probably STILL wouldn't be a College Game Day in Berkeley unless Georgia, Auburn, Ohio State, Iowa, Alabama, Ole Miss, Penn State, Michigan, Washington, and Clemson had ALL somehow screwed up their seasons at that point. Not. Gonna. Happen.

Meaning they will be in town. The Miami game is on 10/5. I mention that because I've always thought a fleet week is the perfect time to host a big game on a 5pm abc slot.
I do think we need to be no worse than 3-1 to get it but I don't see that being an issue at this point. We will knock off one of fsu/Auburn if not both.
The only problem is Michigan Washington is that week as is Clemson fsu.
However I think it's possible so long as Washington and/or Michigan have a loss at that point and Miami is 1 loss or undefeated.

We would have to be undeafeated as well as Miami to have any shot in my opinion which is getting way ahead of ourselves obviously. FSU would have 2 losses at that point and very unlikely to be on gameday, Clemson or not. Other games to watch would be UM/UW as you said if Michigan can beat Texas, Iowa vs Ohio St would be interesting but Ohio st goes to Oregon the following week with a high likelihood to be on college gameday. A&M vs Missouri is a strong candidate if A&M is unbeaten since they will have taken down ND.

Cal would have already hosted had it not been for Seung-Hui Cho.

All of you guys forget about Cal's trump card -- The Play. Nothing comes even close to it in college or pro football. I once read that Starkey vacationed in Italy a few weeks after The Play and was surprised that American people visiting there wanted to talk to him about The Play. That shows how famous it was and is.

I have tried to offer Cal $50,000 to construct a device that will show The Play and its aftermath on demand, housed inside Memorial for safekeeping to avoid overnight vandalism. It should show the full, crisp video of The Play call and it's aftermath, including the officials huddling up to decide if Cal had scored a legal touchdown and, afterwards, Starkey's famous rant after they ruled it a touchdown, concluding with his statement -- "There will be no extra point" (as Cal's touchdown by itself put Cal ahead by a point).

Kevin Moen's statue location should also be described to visitors, as he scored Cal's winning touchdown.

Cal's got a beautifuil stadium, probably one of the most picturesque in the country, offering multip[le beautiful views. The views from the stadium from its west and east sides are fantastic. GameDay could take viewers on a ride up to the top of the Campanile and show the view of the Bay from there, perhaps at sunset. Maybe also a brief tour of the Cal campus and famous nearby locations around "Tele" like Top Dog.

College GameDay could be a magical publicity event for Cal Berkeley and the city of Berkeley itself and be a shot in the arm for our alma mater and Cal football. It could make Cal and Berkeley a much bigger destination location than they already are. GameDay could also make Cal a more desirable place for athletes to come to play college sports.

BTW, as am aside I think Cal shoud offer GameDay visitors, for a price, a chance to buy lunch and eat lunch on the grass below the stadium, consisting of one or two Top Dog hot dogs, potato salad, and a big cup of ice cream They should also offer free football related skill events next to the lunch are for both young and older children to participate in.

The Colorado one was pure Deion hype and purely a ratings play. Maybe Wilcox will drive similar hype this year . The James Madison was the odd appeal to their sob story of not being allowed to go to a bowl despite their unbeaten record at the time. Can't recall the circumstances of App St/Troy. Army/Navy is the other obvious exception. Unfortunately the the OP's idea that the Play excites fans of other blue bloods to the point they are craving to get an inside peek into Berkeley and all of its quirkiness doesn't hold any weight. We've had that card for over 40 years and it hasn't mattered, why would it now?

Agreed. There needs to be a compelling story, a matchup of ranked teams is just the usual and most obvious. I do think Cal's first year in the ACC is a good start, but there needs to be a lot more. I don't see anything compelling at this point. Maybe later if Cal is riding high in the ACC standings, ranked, and Ott is leading the ACC in rushing.

I bleed blue & gold and I'd love for ESPN College GameDay to be at Cal every year, let alone just once, but IMO ESPN giving tribute to the Virginia Tech shooting victims was the right call.

Pure, unsupported, opinion on your part.

A better, much more logical opinion, is that ESPN will allow a team with an undefeated or even a one loss early season record, which has not previously played on College GameDay, to host GameDay, if the opposing team also has a good record.

I believe early season games have a lot more scheduling flexibillty for GameDay than later season games, especially if the host team has never appeared on College GameDay and is a very famous team, as Cal is, given that easily the most famous play in college football history is Cal's The Play.

Don't know how far in advance ESPN books teams for College GameDay, but Cal could easily be 4 - 0 or 3 - 1 after the Florida St. game, so the Miami home game would be good for Cal to help insure it has a winning record for the GameDay game (I'm sure ESPN would demand that).

People who should be on the program from Cal (I think it runs two hours) should be Chancellor Lyons (he went to Cal and attended the 1984 The Play game), Kevin Moen, who scored the winning touchdown, Joe Starkey, Cal's famous announcer of The Play, and Jim Knowlton, Cal's athletic director. Lyons and Starkey would probably be the only people from Cal to be interviewed, maybe Starkey.

Cal could be 4 - 0 or 3 - 1 after the Florida St. game. That would be a good game for Cal to be on ESPN'S College GameDay, which I think lasts up to two hours.

I think Cal's representatives for the TV show should be Chancellor Lyons, who went to Cal and attended the 1982 The Play game, Cal football announcer Joe Starkey, and probably Kevin Moen, who scored the winning Cal touchdown.

You flatter me!
I don't think anyone's ever accused me of being knowledgeable. I think it's more a case that I am actively fighting the OldBlue19 virus which leads to unrelenting apathy and "realism" <cough> pessimism. While I have no doubt that after being infected as a young alum by Kevin Riley and Booya before him, that eventually I will succumb to the virus I am trying to live my life to the best and as care free as possible before the virus takes all that is left of me and relegates me to drinking vodka martinis on the west side in the shade in a chairback.

Great minds think alike, but I think we should be invited onto College GameDay for our game 4 va. MiNI even if we lose to Florida State, so long as that loss is not a blowout.

What do you think about my idea of starting Rogers in our first game given this is Rogers last year and Mendoza has three years left. From what I have read, Rogers is looking very gooD this season.

A total unsupported remark on your part. Just for grins (though it may not be easy) why don't you show the rank of each GameDay team at the time of their GameDay appearance over the past two years or so. My guess is that there are several teams on GameDay that are not ranked in the top 25 or so, especially in the first few weeks of the college football season.

Which is why GameDay will lean over backwards to allow Cal to host on College GameDay.

Fact: exactly 2 teams have hosted gameday in the last decade that weren't at least one of the following: ranked, undefeated, a service academy, an FCS team, or a G5 team

2021 UCLA- hosting a top 10 neo-blueblood Oregon, also the Chip angle

2019 Nebraska - old once upon a time blueblood, hosting top 5 tOSU

We have a shot if Miami and us are both undefeated but I think a 3-1 Cal team is unlikely to be ranked when you consider the timing or the who we would be losing to. Those are steep odds to beat if we are not ranked. There are teams that Gameday would bend over backwards for, and they are called blue bloods.

Yeah they have played on gameday 3 times. In addition to the 2007 win at Oregon, they also played 2004 at USC (loss), and 2015 at Utah (loss).

Not the same thing as HOSTING ESPN College GameDay.

I have mentiongamed this brfore, but HOSTING College GameDay could bring in a lot of additional fans to come to the game (and record the game at home to look at later). Might add 20,000 or fans. That might bring in $800,000 worth of addditional revenue at $40 a pop.
