would be more impactful if the chancellor spent time in the marketing department

I get that, but at least he is showing an interest. At least that is a start.

Agreed. I wish he had been a regular on Bearinsider these last few decades and would know that Knowlton needs to go yesterday, but by getting involved, he will see the highly paid incompetence that reports to him and hopefully does the right thing ASAP.

Love to see this! Look, are we are finished product? Far from it, it takes years to erase the institutional plague that sits in the cal athletics office. But so far I have been more than pleased by Lyons presence. He knows there is a football game this weekend! That's far more than I have seen from every other chancellor in recent history

The fact that he is responding on X also shows that he is receptive to feedback

I remember giving Birgeneau a high five back in the student section during the Tedford era. Seems like ages ago now...

He could be doing a lot of other things on this holiday weekend and with the semester just starting.

This was hardly a premier can't-miss game to attend.

I like it.

Please fire JKer now.

Was JK even at the game. Anyone interact with him?

He was on the field during the Ted Ago tribute.

The most heartening part of that tweet to me was the bit about it might require proof of alum status. That tells me that he gets that our core audience is alums, not random bay area sports fans wanting a faux minor league baseball experience.

Marketing is about figuring out what you've got that nobody else does. We've got about a zillion unique and wonderful things - NONE of which we currently try to take advantage of . Filling the stadium with alums who already love what's unique about Cal, even if we have to give them free tickets to do it, would be a HUGE step in the right direction.

If he needs Bearinsider to know the inside workings of the AD, then he should not have been hired.

I know you mean well but come on now but in effect he is the General. his job is to lead and must rely on his subordinates to do their jobs. I hope he can put the pressure on those subordinates from above to "up their game."

Is Chancellor Lyons our Jerry Jones?

Nope - now is the time butts in seats and TV viewership. Cal football is for Californians. We need fans - very small % of cal alums actually watch Cal football. We have a better chance with football fans in the Bay area.

Personally I dont care where the fans come from, I just want them to show up.

Cool idea, but does he 'only' want to expand the Cal fan base to alums? I imagine there are a lot of Cal fans out there who happen not to be Cal alums, and also, just a LOT of East Bay FB fans with nowhere to go on Saturdays, and no more 'Oakland' Raiders on Sundays.

Probably trying to keep the experience pleasant for the alumni who DID pay to see the game.

The Raiders aren't exactly known for having a pleasant game day experience.

I am a huge Lyons fans. I love all the outreach and passion. BUT. I don't want him to be just another chancellor Tien. All the rah rah is great. But at some point, we need to see actual change or else this is all for show. He either needs to demand a level of accountability from the Atheltic department or he needs to start cleaning house. Nothing less is going to be acceptable

Agree. We need to start by hosting ESPN's College GameDay, where we have an "in" to be selectned. There are only six FBS teams that have never hosted it.

The upcoming Miami game could be a perfect game to host. Still a chance bohh teams will be undefeated then. If so, it would be a historic game. A sell out, preceded by College GameDay at Cal, with Cal invitees Rich Lyons Joe Starkey, and Kevin Moen.

BTW, would love to read about Rich Lyons experience attending the 1982 (The Play) Big Game

I don't think it's that he only wants Cal alums. But he knows that that's our core following. You secure your base first. And frankly, no one has tried to do that in umpteen years. There has been organized campus opposition to football for over 80 years. But very little counter organizing since the early 70s, and virtually none since Snyder was pushed out. That has to change if we're gonna survive. Period.
