My biggest gripe about Wilcox's coaching came in the 2020 Big Game, where Cal lost 24 - 23.

While not described in the above article, Cal chose not to call a timeout when, in the second quarter, Cal did not call a time out when Stanford lined up in an unusual "overload double stack" (my description) on one side of its line, to successfully block a Cal field goal attempt and did the same thing late in the fourth quarter to successfully block a Cal extra point.
Cal did not call a timeout in either instance to discuss how to handle what I think was Stanford's unusual double stack.
I am of the opinion that when an opponent lines up in a formation a team does not know how to counter, that team should call a timeout to discuss what to do. Cal did not do this in either of Stanford's unusual defensive formations that were clearly designed to block Cal's kicks.
I think Wilcox has been an average, at best, coach at Cal far. I also think Cal made a mistake in drastically raising his salary when after Oregon indicated, a few tears ago, they wanted to hire him.
