OT of OT. I don't want to post this in the football board, especially after such an amazing win.

When I was at Cal I was trying to outdo WSU fans for home field advantage especially in basketball. Say any kinds of horrible stuff to opposing players. I got in Brevin Knight's head one game...then he torched us for 30+ and a complete game. I forget which ASU player spit on my friends.

Now that I'm all middle aged...Does anybody else wish we would stop the Bear Territory Chant (other than inside the locker room for the players)? It's traditional and all but it makes us look like poor winners. "Safety School" chants also make us look like jerks even though I thought it was funny as a student.

I can't seem to start new threads so "censorship" was the closest related topic

It's nice to hear, in consideration of our Free Speech discussion on OT, that you have matured to see the limits we may want to put upon ourselves in this area of civil behavior.

I agree with you. It's not classy to taunt opponents with the chant.

Maybe the fundraising crowd could print and sell Berkelium and Californium pennants on sticks for such moments. The lesser minded opponent fans would scratch their heads "what's that?" It would be a much bigger impact when ChatGPT explained the two elements to them.
And it would be in Tradition with our role in Social Protest of the 60's: silent and nonviolent peaceful demonstrations.

We still have some old bears here who that would resonate with, I'm sure!!

Give me a break.

What is next?
1. No more AXE yell following a Big Game win. (After all it would hurt Stanford fan's feelings by rubbing in their loss.

2. No more rushing the field after a great win? (How atrocious! We should win with a little dignity)

3. Quickly take down the score off the scoreboard after a win. ( we wouldn't want any fans of the losing team to feel bad as they walk out of the stadium)

3. Better yet. After every game have the fans from the winning team quietly file out of the stadium and salute the fans of the losing team.

Many have argued against "and the rockets BLUE glare" that we all should during the singing of the anthem, as it's disrespectful to service people, but I would argue that sending them into harm's way for corporate profit is more disrespectful, and serenading a piece of cloth is just weird.

Don't care about the bear territory chant or any hurt feelings that may come from it. To me it is more celebratory than disrespectful, although I could get some sensitive people, especially those unfamiliar with us, taking it that way.

One chant I could really do without though is the repeated "F*** You Stanford" one. I'm not sensitive about language personally (ex sailor), but I really hate my young kids hearing that as I just think it's a bad look. I also brought some friends with kids to the last home Big Game and was cringing internally when it went down.

Lesson learned, for the big game I'll sit back on the alumni side when I have the kids as I've never really noticed it much on that side.

College football is about traditions. Unless I missing some micro-aggression, the victory chant is pretty innocuous about the place being your territory since you won. The New Yorker is about a bunch of snobs who write way too much flowery prose about way obscure issues, that they often know nothing about. Living-up to the stereotype, I assume we will have more of the same from this dick.

You see the elderly idiot in the Hawaiian shirt and the blue cap in the lower left-hand corner of this video? The one sitting on (and eventually jumping into) the equipment cart to escape the massive players jumping up and down right next to him? Well I am just going to say that no one else posting on this thread has almost lost their life as a result of the Bear Territory chant. So if I am still willing to say it is awesome, it is absolutely awesome.

And if other teams don't like their stadiums turning into Bear Territory, then they should stop losing to us. Scoreboard.

I was picking up my kid at school last week, parked near the football field, and I heard something vaguely familiar--it was the high school cheerleading squad was practicing their adaptation of Bear Territory. It occurred to me that I never heard another school doing that cheer--granted, I don't attend many high school football games these days--but if it's made it to suburban San Diego teenage cheerleader squads, it must be fairly widespread by now.

In addition to sanitizing it ("damn world" changed to "wide world") and changing the team name, they had some clever variations on the call and response that changed the rhythm and cadence (e.g "You know it" -- "Yeah , alright already"; "You tell the story"--"A bedtime story??"). Hard to be upset at this kind of frivolity if you were the opposing team or fanbase.

I am opposed to defining yourself by what you aren't or what you dislike.

Safety School, 1-800-Be-At-Cal, F*** you Stanford, etc. is all the same. Its defining yourself through what you dislike. Its small, and giving power to what you don't like.

I get that people dislike something else more than they like anything about themselves... but I just dont like it.

Bear Territory chant is about us. It is us celebrating us. Its focused on us being Bears and being victorious. Thats why I like it.

Nothing wrong with the chant! Only wrong thing IMO is if it's sung before the game is over with minutes remaining. It's a celebratory chant declaring victory.

Chanting that at Auburn with my family was gold!

It's not about disrespecting service members. The National Anthem* is just that, it's a song for the entire country. It represents and unifies all of us. Changing (or emphasizing) certain lyrics to represent just one group or to exclude others is antithetical to the whole point of having a National Anthem.

*Please note, I'm intentionally calling it the "National Anthem" and not "The Star Spangled Banner." The Star Spangled Banner was picked to be the National Anthem; on that basis alone do I (or really, we as a nation) honor it. IMHO, there are other songs that would serve better as the National Anthem, but until the current one is replaced, it is one that represents our nation.

It didn't start as a celebratory cheer chanted once the victory was sealed, it was originally a "regular" mid-game cheer, invented by a player who took the microphone and led the student section sometime in the late 80s IIRC.

There are things we do / yell which I don't care for:

- "F*** you Stanfurd!" is terribly inappropriate, in public. Inside the frat house, why not!
- the minor alterations in the Star Spangled Banner lyrics, I'm just not a fan. It's our national anthem.
- "Safety school!" maybe depends on who we're playing, but kinda makes us sound snobby
- throwing or shooting objects at the opposing band... I played in the Cal Band and I'm gonna have to say that's uncool

But for the life of me, I can't see what's wrong with the Bear Territory yell. Can anybody explain the supposed problem?

At Jordan-Hare on Saturday, all the Auburn fans in our vicinity were classy, and polite. Ironically, a few of the numerous Cal fans in our area were at times a bit obnoxious, and at times I felt a little embarrassed at how they represented us.

They weren't bad, but broke out with F-bombs on numerous occasions even though there were kids around (from both Auburn and Cal) and they were maybe a bit too disparaging of Auburn on occasion, veering away from classiness and into the kind of things we'd scream at hated rivals.

I get it, it's a football game, so this is no kind of major complaint. Also, I was very glad to be around so many Cal fans because, on the whole, they made the day much more enjoyable. But if I'd been an Auburn fan with kids with me, I may not have formed that favorable of an impression of Cal fans.

I'd like Cal fans to be known nationally for their passion, wit, and friendliness. On the whole, I think and hope that this was what was represented by our contingent this weekend in Auburn.

Early 80s.

And it was accompanied by the Cal Band drum line.

The thing I don't like now is at some point in the last decade the players sped it up and garbled it. It should not be so hyper. It is better much slower and more of a call and response.

Bear Territory is anything but cheezy, it's an awesome, rousing high-energy cheer that rolls really well and is anything but sappy. The fact that it has endured and become a locker room staple is a testament to the quality of that cheer.

Old alums don't get it, and wish everybody was still into the dorky old days, but our Berkeley songs are cheesy. With all the lyrical talent of our rappers in the Bay we should pay them to create some new songs for Cal. Nothing wrong with being arrogant and calling someone else stadium Bear Territory, it just the rhyme scheme is corny.

and I'll add our mascot looks like he belongs in a pedo lineup. Oaki should keep his head but needs a new change of clothes, this isn't the 1950s.

If you disagree it doesn't really matter, just telling you how things come off with younger generations. Call it the Nike effect, if you'd like, but it all matters. You can die on the tradition hill if you'd like, tho

It started long before Tedford, in 1982 first year of Kapp. It was perfected under Snyder. It is the Wilcox teams that started this hyper version even though Wilcox was a coach for a couple of years under Tedford and should know better.
