Magic The Gathering cards.

We all forget that the pacific 10 conference had rules about where to put the opposing teams. The acc allows opposing teams to sit in front of home student sections. Not the kids fault. I'm proud of them.

One Aztec got an unsportsmanlike conduct for an "inappropriate" gesture to the Cal bench. Maybe there was some back-and-forth between their sideline and our student section.

Our students probably need a little more practice in how to support a team with a winning record.

Exactly, when you're a winning program you throw more stuff and you make sure it's heavier. It doesn't snow here so we can't do snowballs but we can always run the Philly Special and throw D batteries

The cards have been thrown as far as you can after the card stunt since at least 1980 when I was a freshman.

The difference this year is Wilcox chose to put the visiting team in front of the student section so he and the players would be on the "shady side." It can make a difference on a hot late afternoon game in Memorial. However, now the cards are being thrown at the visiting team, which is deservedly a penalty,

Add to this it was a night game and the likelihood that more students were more drunk than usual and this is the result. Some students probably didn't realize the first penalty was for throwing cards. It is a mistake to think there is a group mind, but it is up to the mic people to try to control the crowd.

It is why when the move was announced, I said that if possible, it would be far better for the team to stay put with the exception of particularly hot days.

It will probably mean the end of the card stunts, which Cal invented.

The PA system in Memorial Stadium is also awful. It's possible most students didn't even hear the half dozen warnings. I barely heard what Wilcox said.

Correct. Didn't hear a single 1. Audio was awful in the student section today.

I'm assuming the cards didn't actually land on the playing field but did land in the vicinity of the SDSU bench. If that was the reason for the penalty (specifically for landing in SDSU territory), and the current setup is to be continued through the season, then its time to scrap the Card Show. There will always be a dumb student who will throw one down, warning or no warning. Not worth a game changing penalty. Scrap the card show.

The difference is that cards used to be thrown during halftime, when there are no referees on the field.

The audio warnings from the ref were perfectly clear on the alumni side.

Dear students: Are you stupid? Or drunk? (Why not both?)

In case you've never seen a football game before, there are these things called penalties, where our team has to go backwards with respect to their goal. This is bad. Your behavior...after 4 warnings...caused this bad thing to happen. Twice. This made our coach pissed off at his own fans, which (needless to say) is Not Where We Want to Be As a Program.

Rally Comm: If we're not going to have card stunts, we don't need cards. it's just putting a weapon in the hands of an idiot. Save yourselves the trouble.

Stadium Security Hello? is this on?

If you throw something on the field at Oracle Park, security would be on you like a duck on a june bug and your day at the park is over. It appears that we don't actually have security at Memorial.

Agreed. No card stunts in games where the opposing team's bench is in front of the student section. 15 yard penalties can cost us a game.

Just get rid of the damn cards already. There haven't been decent cards stunts done in 2 decades! Trying to get drunk students to cooperate isn't going to happen.

Agree with these opinions. I am thinking that for many of the students, it was their first home game - many of whom like many newcomers to a winning Cal team - don't have much of a history with procedures. Yes, add drinking that was observed prior to the game, and this is what you get. Won't happen again. I liked the way Wilcox scolded those who threw the cards.
Bring back bottled beer and cigars at CMS. Should get us back in the Rose Bowl!

A ref I know said ifvthey deemed a safety issue we could have been forced to forfeit the game.

Thats the thanks Wilcox gets for giving people free tickets who would never pay to get in. Maybe he rethinks this.

For all of you hating on card stunts *** IS WRONG WITH YOU!

Card stunts are glorious.

Card stunts are part of our history and tradition.

Pelting the players is avoidable.

and yeah - throwing the cards is awesome.

In the 1994 season it was sometimes the highlight of the game.

Pretty sure I remember everyone throwing the cards as early as 1963 when I was a freshman. There was always an announcement. Do not throw your cards. Pass them to the left. No one passed them to the left. The big fear was that someone would get hit in the eye with the corner of a flying card. And oh, there was plenty of drinking back then. Remember gremmies? A flask of vodka poured into that frozen orange drink. A straw. And, voila, a nice cold screwdriver to kill the pain of watching a lousy team!

They were throwing them at half time during the '38 Rose Bowl, too, so yeah, just a *bit* longer than since 1980 . . .

I was sitting on the student side of the field, and the cards were indeed making it all the way to the field (on the numbers, outside the hashes). On the second 15 yard penalty, the entire SDSU bench was careful to leave it where it landed, called the ref over, with a bunch of their players and assistants pointing at it. Then ref dropped the flag.

Some continued to be thrown even after the two penalties.

The card students seemingly haven't even been attempted this year or last, if I can recall. So placing them each week is almost symbolic at this point.

Card stunts were usually done for the bigger games, not for sparsely-attended OOC games.

At least we're not complaining about loud piped-in music today! (I was at the game, it was barely even audible.)

Seriously, I don't understand what we're doing there: There are cards there, but we're not doing card stunts?

Well, isn't that the problem right there? The students used to hurl all their cards right after the card stunts, well before either team came out of the locker room for the second half.

Also, there needs to be an immediate lesson learned* here: Even if you're 18-19 and just learning to drink responsibly, you never get to throw stuff on the field when the teams are out there. You just can't do that.

* possibly too late to learn any lessons: i bet the cards are gone forever now... another possibility would be lighter weight cards that don't fly so far/well

Exactly. The card stunts (when attempted) have been terrible for many years now. It's time to give them up. I hate to say this, because I know it's a tradition at Cal. But it's obvious that the current generation of students has no interest in them, so since they've become a liability, get rid of them altogether.

I agree. This wasn't a problem in my section on the west side last season, but this year it's terrible.

Yes, we were different back in the 60s-70s in so many ways. I was actually nervous that I would miss the call and F up my cards. We also threw them straight up, and at halftime. The past few years the students don't seem to take it seriously (not scorning the Rally team), but it's time to let it go. Maybe at BG.

That is a great find! So at <least> since 1938. A 22 year old senior in 1938 would be 108 today. Anyone older than that <might> be able to still be complaining about "kids these days" but anyone else is a hypocrite.

There are probably some ways to re-engage the students with card stunts using social media and mobile phones.
