I don't know if this is part of some guerrilla marketing campaign or what but Cal Twitter has been on a tear.

Some of my favorites:

It all started with this precious gem:

I'm not even sure what the Calgorithm is, but it seems relevant here.

The first two were earned and well-deserved. The ones about FSU are more jinx and bulletin board material than not. That's a great way to get walloped by hubris. I hope the Cal players and coaches don't overlook FSU like the fans who made those memes.

Keep in mind, Cal's not really played any really good teams. Yet, Cal has struggled in the first half of all three games! Also, Cal's run defense hasn't really been great. When Davis ran the ball, Cal's defense made Larison look like a Heisman candidate. If FSU's team gets off to a good start, it can afford to run the ball at will and Cal will not be able to stop the run.

Cal fans are getting over their skis here. I don't expect the Noles to roll over for Cal any more than I expected Cal to roll over for Auburn. It'll be a tough game and the Noles will come out looking to put a beat down on our Bears. They don't want to be embarrassed by the new ACC member in their first meeting, especially not at their home. They sure as heck don't want to continue their losing streak. They'll see this as the perfect opportunity to right the ship.

Cal needs to be prepared for this and be ready to weather the storm. If the coaches and players think like NYCGoBears, then I would bet the house on FSU.

The internet has been loving Cal Twitter in its first exposure due to us having been buried in the PAC with no East Coast Bias to prop us up. There's been near daily posts about it on Reddit. Of course if we crash and burn they'll delight in that too but we're Cal fans, nothing can hurt us anymore.

A quick aside: I've adopted The Woke Mob as the nickname for this team and I think it's perfect

I agree there's hubris, particularly on Twitter. But I think most Cal fans are pretty level headed and just having some fun while we can including NYCGO. I see something on Twitter that said Hood Bear was a player on the team. I don't mind players having confidence going into games -- you have to believe that you can win. And I think Wilcox has done a good job of setting the tone that we shouldn't look past any team.

I think the only people against this are politically motivated. Which is funny because Cal fans seem way more apolitical and wholesome (in right wing palatable way) than many other fanbases.

But for the Trumpsters, none of the content anyone is posting matters; at all. It's the engagement that matters. Post ANYTHING about Cal football and its a good thing. We're all trying to convince some Manhattan TV executive that a fanbase exists and has attention and money to spend. One of the best ways to do this is to bombard social media with Cal memes. You've let Big 12 clowns, offended at the fact that you (apparently) snubbed them, control the narrative. TAKE IT BACK!

This is awesome!

This is still a young team with some flaws. I'm definitely concerned that all the recent publicity and adulation will go to their heads. I doubt Wilcox and the rest of his staff will be able to temper the players' excitement. Heck, they couldn't get Cal over the post-Auburn hangover against SDSU until after halftime! They also almost let Cal overlook the Aggies in the first game.

What's needed is for the team leaders to step up and remind the younger guys to tune out what's said about them (both good and bad) and focus on doing their jobs on the field (and off). But I'm not sure who the team leaders are who would do that. Nando's a high energy excitable guy and that's really great because he can bring his teammates up with his energy and enthusiasm, but the team needs a Jared Goff type leader who remains even keeled as the Bears deal with newfound effusive praise. Teddye Buchanan is too new and also seems excitable. Cade Uluave's too young. Jaydn may be the guy, but does anyone know if he's that vocal leader?

The Bears can't afford to overlook anyone. They have to play every game as if they're hungry for a win. They can't let the outside world's talk get to their heads. They need to focus on improving every game and beating the opponent in front of them. If they do that, they'll be pretty darn good.

I admit, that's a second front I hadn't considered. But I do think if the Bears keep their heads on straight and their noses to the grindstone, they'll get some impressive wins. At the end of the day, it's the wins that will draw eyeballs and move the ad revenue meter. That will make the Manhattan TV execs take notice.

I think we may be conflating two things here. Some fans having fun with Berkeley's reputation and putting out self-deprecating/mocking memes are NOT even remotely related to the team and its attitude about upcoming opponents. They have no more in common with each other than they do with Victorian poetry.

Cal has flaws, which have been exacerbated by key injuries. But in some ways, that makes the meme game even more enjoyable. Our fans literally have nothing to lose. Win and the party keeps rolling. Lose and the memes get a bunch of new material and in some ways become even funnier (at least to non-Cal fans). And no one was calling Cal a national championship contender pre-season. You can't be overconfident and arrogant if your fanbase spent the entire off season asking whether we could even dare to dream of an 8 win season (a total that would get a number of SEC/Big10 coaches fired).

I think those of us who have been around a while know that we need to enjoy the good moments when we can. And the first 3-0 start since 2019 is definitely a good thing. Beating an SEC team on the road in front of 85,000 fans is a good thing. But none of it means tomorrow is guaranteed or even likely. As fans we can live for the day. The team can and will focus on business.

In the current world of conference realignment, I'd say there's no such thing as bad publicity. You want to make people want to watch your games. If Cal Twitter s***posting helps juice the ratings a bit, then great!

Look at how many eyeballs Colorado gets now, thanks to the presence of Deion Sanders. The team isn't even all that good!

Get what you're saying since Goff seems like a pretty cool customer, but the last time his college team was super hyped and ranked, he threw like 5 interceptions to an underdog Utah team and brought us all back to earth...

In what world was that Utah team an underdog? They were ranked #5 and beat Oregon and Michigan. If they didn't have their bi-yearly choke to $C they might have been Pac-12 champions.

This is most national publicity we've gotten in 10, maybe even 20 years. But most interestingly, this is the first time we've had other fanbases even mildly interested in our program. All of these things lined up in an incredibly serendipitous way. It's the conference realignment talks putting us in the spotlight all year long (magnified by our super polarizing brand), then getting into an east coast oriented conference and all the media coverage that entails, then beating the hated Hugh Freeze and having all the Alabama/SEC fans jump on the dogpile on Auburn, and the upcoming matchup against the absolute most talked about program in the last 9 months.

It's a wild ride and we should enjoy the fun while it lasts.

Get what you're saying since Goff seems like a pretty cool customer, but the last time his college team was super hyped and ranked, he threw like 5 interceptions to an underdog Utah team and brought us all back to earth...
Other than Goff the team played rather well at Utah, it was the following game down in Pasadena that exposed flaws within the team that Goff could not compensate for, also forget hype and rankings we are 3-0 dogs going into a game against an 0-3 team, there is more to prove here than just Twitter noise.

Meme-ing an old movie:

Alliances made with all the schools that voted us into the ACC and the positive responses from fans of those schools:

UCLA was ranked #18, the game was in LA where even Tedford never won and Josh Rosen had a big game. We just hit the gauntlet: @#5 Utah, @#18 UCLA, #17 USC, big win over OSU, then @#13 Oregon and @#15 Stanford.

Yeah, the team finished a disappointing 8-5, but it was 5 losses to ranked teams, 4 of them on the road. The PAC-12 was tough that year and our future great defense was mostly freshmen.

I'm not even sure what the Calgorithm is, but it seems relevant here.

You see: I don't follow any Cal accounts, except for Cal football and Cal Athletics and maybe 2 others.

On your Twitter feed, you have 2 options: The "Following" feed, which is the accounts I'm following. And the "For you" feed, which is an algorithm feed based on what you might be interested in.

i use the "Following" feed to catch up on what's going on.

I use the "For you" feed when I'm bored on my phone and want to see what's out there.

A lot of social media outlets do this. But Twitter and YouTube do it the best.

While I don't like Elon, I have to admit, the algorithm feed is always up my alley. It is exactly what I'm interested in.

And lately, what I've been interested in is Cal. And the "Calgorithm" has delivered.

I think the Lasco injury was huge. If he was still on the roster we wouldn't have had to rely on the 3 headed monster and might have been able to take pressure off Jared.

Very true. I am conflating Cal Twitter with the team. I just really hope the team doesn't read "believe their own press" (as we old folks used to say) and instead ignore all the current online excitement over them.

I've just also seen Cal faceplant after having a little success. Again. And Again. And again. It's something I would prefer that the team didn't do this time. I want to see them win and surprise us all by having a double digit win season (exclusive of bowl games).

Maybe that's just me. Maybe some of you are okay with seeing Cal getting a little publicity and the losing. I'm not. If I had my druthers, Cal would win it all. We can celebrate after that, not before.

I'm not sure you're quite understanding what's happening here. What cal twitter is doing is not overconfidence or hubris. It's mostly self deprecating and self aware. And there's an understanding amongst everyone that times likes these don't come along that often, so we should enjoy it to the limit when things are going well.

Cal Twitter isn't the concern. Sure, it's arguable that guys like NYCGOBEARS are jinxing the team by already posting about having beaten FSU. But that's not my main concern. I'm worried the Cal players might buy into the posts and think they'll just walk over FSU. That's a recipe for disaster. FSU has trap game written all over it!

Cal isn't so good that it can play suboptimal football and still beat FSU. Neither is FSU so bad that it'll beat itself at home against a newly resurgent Cal squad. The Cal players will need to be absolutely focused on doing their jobs. All the Cal Twitter nonsense is a distraction. At best, the team will ignore it. If they don't, then the loss will be shared by them and the Cal tweeters.

Again, I've seen this play out many times before. Cal starts doing well and getting some positive publicity, the players start to believe they're better than they are, then Cal comes crashing down. We saw this under Tedford, and even under Sonny (remember "Keep calm and drop 50?"). I really don't want to see history repeat itself here. Cal is on the verge of something special. Let's not ruin that over something as inane as Twitter memes.

Nah bruh, it ain't that deep - this isn't 2007 or 2015. Not just for Cal football but also in Internet culture terms.

Memery & shYtposting are a regular thing in Gen Z/alpha circles, and I'm pretty sure the players (starting with team leaders like Nando, Jaydn, Nohl, Teddye) understand that these memes aren't serious. If anything, it probably helps them lighten the mood AND focus on the task at hand - knowing that Cal students/alums/fans got their back.

And to echo a comment I made in another forum [re: Cal Twitter generally]: Young alums DO care & genuinely love Cal alot; many of us just do so in our own way often with self-aware/self-deprecating humor - aka 'Cal Twitter hits different'.

We saw this under Tedford, and even under Sonny (remember "Keep calm and drop 50?"). I really don't want to see history repeat itself here. Cal is on the verge of something special. Let's not ruin that over something as inane as Twitter memes.

lol I don't think anyone with half a brain is overlooking FSU. If this were wake forest and they were 0-3, maybe. But there's not a single player going into this game thinking they can just show up and beat FSU at their own place. Thinking thats even a possibility is crazy. Cal may well lose. But it'll be because FSU was better that day. Not cause of overconfidence. You're letting your cal paranoia get the best of you.

Unburden yourself. We are not going back.
